Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. You learn lots of new swear words, including ones you didn't even know you knew. Personally I can't wait to visit Great Britain again and try them out.
****************************************** The tremendous landscape of Middle-earth, the psychological and moral universe of The Lord of the Rings, is built up by repetition, semi-repetition, suggestion, foreshadowing, recollection, echo, and reversal. Through it the story goes forward at its steady, human gait. There, and back again. -Ursula K. LeGuin, Rhythmic Patterning in The Lord of the Rings

Yes, one of the lesser-known cultural educational effects of TORN.

I wasn't even aware it was a swear word, until it was pointed out to me. As you affixed "excuse my French" to it. I certainly wouldn't use it in a room of strangers.

It is odd, isn't it, Daniel? I posted it without even thinking about it, being fixated on the thread itself at the time. I wanted to use a derogatory word, but did not think it was a 'bad' swear word. Whenever I see/hear it I have an image of 'throwing' pancakes above a pan, or 'lobbing' something over a wall, etc. As I said, I didn't know its meaning as a derogatory term – until I looked it up in the Oxford English Dictionary. I have already apologised for using it, I believe.

Aren't you from the UK? I'm quite surprised you didn't know what it meant! I still don't think it's that bad though, at least compared to the other main slang term for *that*. Edited to add: just saw your post above - I think we posted at the same time. :)

By the way, is 'jacka**es' a 'bad' swear word in American English? Does it refer to donkeys? I rather like that one when it is used by Rocket Raccoon…

I have already apologised for using it, I believe. I wasn't fishing for another one. And there's no need to apologise to me. I'm not overly offended by it (unless it is aimed at me!), but one wouldn't generally walk into a room of strangers in real life and start swearing, which is why I'll alert the mods regardless of how mild a swear word might be. While we're on the topic of it, this sentence always brings me out of The Hobbit: "There is nothing in the feeling of weight in an idle toss-pot's arms". It no longer means drunkard for the younger generation!

Hilariously (to me at any rate) he was convinced that a very rude word was in fact a description of a nun's wimple and included it in one of his poems. It's remained in print ever since.

but it's not family-friendly, which is why it was removed. No worries Glorfindela - I've used a word or two in innocence and been brought up short by how very not-used-in-polite-company they were in other countries.
