The 'ah-ha!' moment

Finally got around to bring my oldest son (6 y.o) to see the last film this afternoon after weeks of begging. Since AUJ, he's had a hard time comprehending where in time this story falls in terms of LotR no matter how I try to explain it (Sarumans alligence seems to confuse him a lot for example, a lot of 'but I thought Saruman's the bad guy' ) As the film's coming to an end and Gandalf bangs on the door and replies 'And what about very old friends?', like a crashing wave of realitization, my son turns to me and yells at the top of his lungs 'This is how the Lord of the rings begins, dad! I get it now!!'

I definitely don't think it is a film for a small child. Apart from problems with understanding the plot, I think it is too violent and sad for small children. Azog, for example, is much more scary than any Orc I've seen in any other film – he would have given me nightmares if I had seen the film as a child. I think AUJ was probably more suitable for children.

Although I doubt he'll be interested in watching it again just like the other two, he isn't into this trilogy like he is with the Lord of the Rings. When he picks one to watch, it's always the fellowship. Never the two towers, and maybe return of the king once in a rare while. He says fotr is the most interesting.

, but when I think about it, my son was 7 when LOTR came out and he saw it (and enjoyed it). We have to remember that most of the toy things for kids over the past 15+ years are oriented around fantasy type characters from Pokemon to video games. They are already primed for the movies. Add in Harry Potter and numerous other films....animated etc. The emotional element may be a bit much for some kids.
