Black Riders Can't Post

Hello,
Would the Black Riders still have used their winged creatures if their horse had no drowned in The Fellowship of the Ring?

Different steeds for different purposes, I guess [In reply to] Can't Post

Welcome to the Reading Room, nothnglikethesun11.

My own guess is that we see the Black Riders in Fellowship of the Ring as a covert mission to try & seize the Ring while it is in enemy territory, Sauron does not have much of a presence in Eriador at that time, & so its ticklish - he's trying to snatch the Ring without attracting counter-measures from Gandalf &Co. or Saruman. So conventional horses are part of a (not entirely convincing) disguise. Flying Fell Beasts, by contrast, would attract too much attention, I think.

BYy the time we get to ROTK, it's too late for that: once it's open war, there's no reason not to have the flying stinky things.

You're welcome :) - of course, there's also a reason why the Riders "can't have nice things"... [In reply to] Can't Post

I'll reply with a question! [In reply to] Can't Post

Did the Black Riders even HAVE their Fell Beasts before their [Rohirrim] horses drowned???????? I have often wondered about this.

~"Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.” ― Gandalf the Grey~
