Amazing Dain Can't Post

What do you think of this wonderful character? unfortunately has very little screen time, but at the level of design is perfect and at the level of characterization has very big potential! I hope that we will see more extended edition also because I believe holes screen and its design so special is spectacular (beard with fangs and hair by applause) I believe it is objectively the most successful among the Dwarves without detracting from the other, what do you think?

A waste. [In reply to] Can't Post

For the three seconds we saw him, he looked terrific, but there was zero character on display. And the pig was absurd. No one would ride for a minute on that thing, let alone into battle. Somebody was just going down a list of improbable animals for characters to ride and didn't know when to stop.

Such a wonderful opportunity to see Dain & co,, but totally wasted, I'm afraid.

I didn't expect I would care for Dain [In reply to] Can't Post

But I loved him! I loved his personality, his voice and his tremendous War Hog! And I thought his design was absolutely perfect, especially with the little tusks woven into his beard! Smile

Here's what I thought (heads up: get ready for some Black Sabbath) [In reply to] Can't Post

I thought his design and performance rocked. A quintessential Dwarf warrior with an attitude.

Also, he reminded me of a certain classic metal song. So I wrote a tribute, with that tune in mind. I call it:

-IRONFOOT-

(A tribute to
Dáin II Ironfoot, and
Billy Connolly’s performance of the character, in the latest movie, to the tune of (Iron Man, Black Sabbath)

(Spoken loudly in thick Scottish accent:)
I am Ironfoot!

(Sung:)
Has he lost his mind?
With his helmet is he blind?
Mounted, riding tall,
Though the piggy's rather small.

Azog should be dead,
Book says this guy took his head.
We’ll just pass it there,
Most filmgoers hardly care.

He, with spine of steel,
Leads his Dwarves onto the field.
Hail from Iron mines,
Come to aid of Durin’s kind.

Thorin had called him,
Swift his raven did soar,

Planning his defense
From armies outside of his door.

Now the time is here,
Just one question, pointy-ears,
Pardon to sound rough,
Why don’t you all go SHOVE OFF???

Then, unexpected,
Something makes all turn their heads.

Orcs in formation,
Dáin comes out charging ahead.

Phalanx wall of dread!
Felling foes with his bare head!
Slaying as fast as they can,
Iron Hills leads at the van!

***

So, yeah I agree with OP: wonderful! I could envision a spinoff movie with Dain as main character. Just a thought.

***

He was born of mortal frailty mixed with Elven fallen realm,
Comin’ home to a land he’d never been before.
Arvernian behind him, sailed the seas of Middle-earth,
You might say he didn’t know what lay in store.

When his wife came out to find him she'd been turned into a bird,
Upon her breast there shone a shining star,
So he took her to his bosom, and by morn her form returned,
And he shifted West to find the high Valar.

And in Valinor he went before the high,
In doing so, resigned himself to die.
Take up arms against the Shadow, asked he of the high,
of the Valar high. (Fight, fight the Shadow)
of the Valar high. (Fight, fight the Shadow)

I thought he was great! [In reply to] Can't Post

The initial close up on his face is clearly CGI but I'm having a hard time believing all subsequent shots of him (in the heat of battle, when he embraces Thorin, etc) are CGI. He looks very real to me, aside from that first shot of his face. Why oh why couldn't they have spent a little more time on that. One of my favorite characters for sure.

The boar isn't so stupid, Elizabeth. [In reply to] Can't Post

I don't think that PJ & Co pull things out of the hat just to be ridiculous. The ride-on boar is out of Norse myth. When the god, Freyr, wants to get around, he will ride on his boar named Gullinbursti. His boar travels quicker than any horse. Occasionally he makes the boar pull a chariot with him on it. Gullinbursti was a gift from a DWARF named Brokkr whose name means 'metal-worker' and so the dwarves obviously made use of such animals.

Me? I loved Dain - and his boar. He really made me laugh.

Thank you for that info, ShireHorse [In reply to] Can't Post

I really enjoy seeing the connections between Tolkien (or the related things in the movies) and Norse mythology. You inspired me to get out my book on Norse mythology and look up Gullinbursti (Golden Bristle - very cool!), and I discovered that his alternate name is Slidrugtanni (Dangerous Tooth), which seems very appropriate for a boar. And even more interesting, there's another somewhat mysterious character connected to Freyja named Hildisvini (Battle-Pig - how perfect). For me, these kinds of things add even more depth and interest to the stories. Thanks!

The 'battle-pig' was a misfire [In reply to] Can't Post

The beast should have been more of a classic wild boar. Otherwise, my only complaint is that we didn't get any Dain after the battle.

you know a character is well characterized if the moment they appear they fit and belong without forcing it, you take to them and want to see more of them. He ticked all those boxes, pity we didn't have more of him! Frown

Would have exchanged time from others to have more of him!

Not that so much as perhaps a nod to Terry Pratchett's Hogfather.
