One Spin Off Film - What Should It Be? Can't Post

Hi All,

If we could see one spin off film set in Middle Earth what would you like to see?

Personally i'd like to see a movie set in the Shire around the time, or just before the Fellowship of the Ring. Not sure what it could be about yet, but maybe something along the lines of a Stand By Me Hobbit movie would be good. Smile It wouldn't have to be an epic film with big battles, just a good story and characters.

The Shire definitely [In reply to] Can't Post

However, it should take place in Hobbiton where Bilbo has set up a general goods shop and is running it with his nephew Frodo. Frodo is left to do all the grunt work while Bilbo continually thinks of new ways to separate coins from his customer's pockets. Bilbo also disparage's Frodo's supposed lineage, and Frodo laments of the life of a young shopkeep...

Legolas fan here [In reply to] Can't Post

I would LOVE to see Aragorn and Legolas meeting up and travelling with the Rangers as the next film. They could even have them on the search for Gollum. That would put Legolas in Mirkwood at the time of Gollum's escape, explaining his appearance at the Council of Elrond.
I do think they'd have to recast Aragorn, much as I love Viggo. He's a great actor, and they have great prosthetics, but years matter.

If there could be only one... [In reply to] Can't Post

I would have to go with the early exploits of Aragorn. The bonus is that it could include his first meetings with Arwen, Gandalf, Legolas a young Denethor, etc. Unfortunately, if it maintained continuity with the Jackson films we could not have Aragorn as a young boy (Estel) meeting Bilbo in Rivendell.

Dain Ironfoot et al [In reply to] Can't Post

I suggested it in a recent post yesterday. A spinoff about Dain might work. If it were continuous with Jackson's adaptations, he could be the one to slay a different Orc chieftain, some predecessor to Azog. It could start with a framing device of him arriving at BOTFA as we are introduced to him in the movie. Or perhaps we could start with him in Iron Hills receiving Thorin's raven summons. Then flashback to his childhood. We might even get to meet the younger version of Thorin and others we know. It ends up at Battle of Azanulbizar, or some earlier battle perhaps, where he slays an important Orc that precedes Azog. Maybe he and Thorin didn't get along at first but gradually form a friendship. It could be fun learning why he rides that type of war pig, and what their relationship might have been. It could have lots of comedy as well as action. In the end we get the final bookend where he becomes King Under the Mountain.

Or instead of ending there, maybe we seen him fighting in the North against Sauron's forces during the time of LOTR. That could be a sequel, even. In that movie, we might get to meet Glorfindel, finally. And of course Grimbeorn and Brand.

Who could play young Dain? Hopefully Billy Connolly would want to reprise his role for older/current Dain.

There might even be separate additonal spinoffs. One for Glorfindel, one for Grimbeorn, one for Brand...all.leading up to an ensemble Avengers-style movie where they fight in the Northern theatre of the War during the events of LOTR. Lee Pace might reprise his role as Thranduil, and maybe we also get Radagast and Tauriel. Potential?

Arvernian behind him, sailed the seas of Middle-earth,
You might say he didn’t know what lay in store.

When his wife came out to find him she'd been turned into a bird,
Upon her breast there shone a shining star,
So he took her to his bosom, and by morn her form returned,
And he shifted West to find the high Valar.

And in Valinor he went before the high,
In doing so, resigned himself to die.
Take up arms against the Shadow, asked he of the high,

One with all 5 of them!

Or just focusing on one...

Saruman.

Perhaps an intricate interpretation of how it came to be that in a sense that Saruman went from The White to the Black.

Would get to see how Galadriel viewed him (with mistrust) - his relationship with Gandalf (and Radagast haha!).

I am obsessed with Saruman - aspiring to know every last detail about him.

I like to think of myself as a Saru-scholar.

The Terrible Took Daughters: Pirates of the Sundering Seas [In reply to] Can't Post

“Not the Gandalf who was responsible for so many quiet lads and lasses going off into the Blue for mad adventures. Anything from climbing trees to visiting Elves – or sailing in ships, sailing to other shores!"

The three remarkable daughters of the Old Took... once in a while members of the Took-clan would go and have adventures. They discreetly disappeared, and the family hushed it up...

Not that Belladonna Took ever had any adventures after she became Mrs. Bungo Baggins.

I want more of Thranduil and Mirkwood. Wink

Plus, it would be interesting to see what was happening in another part if Middle-Earth during the War for the Ring.

I would love to see this and several other Mirkwood Elf movies. [In reply to] Can't Post

Love the Legolas idea, as it was even set up in the last Hobbit movie. And War in the North would be another option.

You could get a Mirkwood Elf trilogy if you made the above two movies plus one about Thranduil's backstory/origins and the Battle of the Last Alliance. My ideal trilogy would be set up as follows:
1. Thranduil backstory/Battle of the Last Alliance
2. Legolas meets Aragorn/the hunt for Gollum
3. War in the North (with Thranduil and Mirkwood; father-son reunion with Legolas at the end, maybe even show Legolas leaving Middle-earth as part of the end of the Age)

These movies may not tie together except for the common theme of Mirkwood, although I would gladly see any of the above movies if they were made. And they would supplement the already-existing movies.

Although they showed some of the Battle of the Last Alliance in FOTR, though, I don't know what restrictions copyright law/the Tolkien Estate would have for this. Does anyone else know how likely a Battle of the Last Alliance movie might be?

So there would be less backlash, I'd imagine. Maybe I am only imagining it...Tongue

What kind of rights do they have to make derivative works, I wonder?

Ya know... [In reply to] Can't Post

I saw a GREAT possibility for a spinoff in Legolas' BotFA journey. Legolas speaks of his Mother being killed when Tauriel and he are looking over Gundabad; Legolas tells Thranduil he won't return to Mirkwood (great fodder there between Father and Son); Thranduil speaks to Legolas about how his Mother loved him (Legolas) more than anyone; AND Thranduil told Legolas to seek out Strider and the Dunedan. Now if that doesn't scream possibilities... I don't know what does ;)

Some of the Middle-earth video games are good examples of derivative works. Look at LotR: War in the North, LotR: The Third Age or Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor as examples.

True. [In reply to] Can't Post

But would they do it? WB has a hold on a huge franchise, but their lack-luster marketing strategy inclines me to believe that they will not take full advantage of it. On the one hand that saddens me, but on the other, it will tend to prevent over commercialisation of the Tolkien Brand, no?

Also True... [In reply to] Can't Post

Warner Bros. has often been its own worst enemy. There tends to be too many executives with their fingers in the pot; this may be why the studio has had so many problems launching super-hero film franchises (for one example). It might be just as well that there are no immediate plans for new, original Middle-earth films.
