is definitely a worst case scenario for all dwarves. Line of Durin over and out, remember...? And a bit of snivelling in the distance is all we get? Balin 's (strangely composed) contemplation that Thorin "will pass into legend" is nowhere near a fitting end to this part of the story.

I hated this line - "Orcs. No more than a hundred." "We'll handle it, go'"

Really?? Two vs a hundred? The orcs are so useless and nonthreatening in these films, it's laughable. Did you notice the big line-up of armoured trolls that just get shot down in seconds by arrows? Why did they not do that in RotK?

It was goblin mercenaries, not orcs.

I was glad to see the Goblins of AUJ made some sort of appearance in the battle -- particularly since in the book the death of the Great Goblin was one of the main motivations for entering the battle in the first place. Granted, PJ chose not to convert those Goblins into Orcs for these movies, but rather make them a sort of sub-Orc class.

- first - I'm not a fan of how Smaug, the baddest dragon in all of literature, is dead within 5 minutes of the film. Same thing with the white council. Sauron out of the picture by the 15-minute mark. - second - a 400 pound orc with army plates wouldn't float.
