What can we garauntee for BOTFA EE? Can't Post

I was thinking of what we can garauntee for the BOTFA EE, if PTA really intends for it to add an extra 30 mins.

1. A prologue of some sort
2. More Smaug v Laketown
3. More Dol Guldur
4. More pre-BOT5A stuff
5. Much more Beorn
6. Much more Dain
7. HOW SHALL THIS DAY END
8. More random bot5a stuff
9. ONE DAY I WILL REMEMBER etc
10. Thorin and other funerals
11. post-bot5a scenes and endings for many characters
12. More Back Again stuff

13. Possibly a Bilbo/Frodo scene?
14. A scene where Gandalf explains Thrain arc to Thorin?

What else do you guys think?

Do we really think we'll see a prologue? [In reply to] Can't Post

Based on PJ's various comments, it seems like he didn't want one here - and Smaug's attack on Laketown kind of functions as the prologue anyway, coming before the title card.

"The danger with any movie that does as well as this one does is that the amount of money it's making and the number of awards that it's got becomes almost more important than the movie itself in people's minds. I look at that as, in a sense, being very much like the Ring, and its effect on people. You know, you can kind of forget what we were doing, if you get too wrapped up in that."
- Viggo Mortensen

Most likely [In reply to] Can't Post

More Dain
Funeral Scene
More of the Battle with the Gundabad orcs between Eagles and Beorn
More extended parting scene between Bilbo and the dwarves with Bilbo getting the drawing from Ori. I know I will REALLY cry then.

I agree with you Sammy. [In reply to] Can't Post

The 4 parts you mention are the safest and almost guaranteed bets for the Extended Edition. Luke Evans also mentioned after talking with Jackson that the Laketown sequence will be extended as well.

Off the top of my head [In reply to] Can't Post

- The goat charging scene in the trailer. We know there are mountain goats as part of the army, but we don't know how it got there (plot hole issue with Peter). Not sure where they will fit this though, because Dain's army is marching down the hill, not riding on goats.

- Thorin's funeral. We have seen screenshots of this scene, so it is already made. They make reference to it in the ending. Will most likely be there

- Bilbo's journey home. We see Bilbo return with the chest from the Troll hoarde, but we never see him acquire it. I suspect there may be more to Gandalf and Bilbo's journey home, including maybe a stop to Beorn as well.

I wouldn't really like to see all of these [In reply to] Can't Post

1. I feel a prologue is unnecessary – the opening with Smaug is very strong.

2. I don't want to see Frodo – the ending we got was just right.

3. I don't particularly feel the need to see more about Thrain.

Agree about all the other things, especially Beorn, Thorin, funerals, tying up of characters such as Thranduil, Dain, Bard, Beorn and Radagast, and the Arkenstone and Thranduil's jewels.

Beorn,Funeral of Durin's Folk,Dain,Thranduil,Arkenstone. But i would also love to see something extra about the Three Rings, for example a scene of Sauron interrogating/possibly torturing Gandalf in his cage before Galadriel arrives in Dol Guldur.

Historical and Mythological clarifications [In reply to] Can't Post

The wonderful quality about the BOTFA is it was driven entirely by character arcs which is why I left the cinema more content than all the previous five films.

However I also sense that a rewarding EE is out there.

Essentially I suspect the extensions will fall into two categories.

Historical

Thorin's symbolic funeral which sees him buried with Orcist and the Arkenstone.

A look back scene with Ian Holm, when he pulls away from the map you have a sense more is there which may cover a visualisation of the restored Erebor with King Dain and Dale with King Bard through Bilbo's writing, the visions conjured up by Balin's visit in the book. For long term fans whom he is saying goodbye to this would give the warm feeling of successful closure which is missing from the TE.

Thranduil and Alfrid are enigmatic characters where the writers have shown a new type of maturity and may well leave them where they are.

Mythological

Given PJ's AUJ and DOS commentary I would expect clarity on the staff and the morgul blade. In the former case the dialogue between R & G may give us the answer to Radagasts completion.

In addition some re expansions

Plot Points

Phillippa has said in a pod cast there is more Dol Gulder dialogue concerning the rings and there are several places Beorn can be reintegrated both before during and after the battle. Given the huge improvement of Beorns representation in DOS EE someone feels he is specialist material and I expect that logic to apply to the BOFA EE.

Bard/Smaug.

Battle manœuvres did we lose the Elven army in front of the gate or did I miss it.

Gandalf may confront Thorin with Thrains love and concern in his dialogue at the gate reinforcing Thrain was right and shaming Thorin.

Given the success of replacement in DOS, not just additions, scenes involving the historical closure may look quite different in the EE.

My Dear Bilbo something is the matter with you! you are not the same hobbit that you were.

A thought about Alfrid... [In reply to] Can't Post

In Reply To
Thranduil and Alfrid are enigmatic characters where the writers have shown a new type of maturity and may well leave them where they are.

The new Chroncles book from Weta is packed full of description of scenarios, some that we know have been dropped from the screenplay already, whilst others could still end up in the EE. There is quite a revealing section regarding Alfrid:

Quote

"we knew that Alfrid had to meet his demise somewhere in the midst of the battle so we explored how that might happen...Peter favoured the idea that Alfrid would somehow find himself in a catapult, getting fired out and into the mouth of some horrible creature. We ended up designing a specific Troll just for that gag..."

"We came up with designs for a very specific Troll that Peter asked for who would play a role in Alfrid's demise. The concept was the Alfrid was looking for somewhere to hide and inadvertently ended up being catapulted across the battlefield to finish in the monster's mouth...."

BTW, on the subject of the missing chariot, the Chronicles tells us:

Quote
"We had a storytelling problem in that Thorin and his nephews had to get up to Ravenhill for their final confrontation with Azog and Bolg, so the rams offered a solution because the heroes could commandeer a chariot with four rams and drive it as far as the terrain and damage would permit. Then they could cut the animals free and ride them bareback up the rocky mountainside..."

I just feel that 30 extra minutes are not enough to give closure to all loose ends. I hope PJ reconsiders and adds something like 45 more minutes. This is such an epic film and it needs to be complete.

What about this? PB said the witch king will get it back so he can stab Frodo with the same weapon on weathertop in LOTR.

I hope still to see this.

And I want to see Radagast handing over his staff to Gandalf and an explanation of why the blue crystal is missing when the staff is in use by Gandalf.

Chronicles of Alfrid et al [In reply to] Can't Post

Thank you for that, bit late to ask for a copy for Christmas. I shied away from the others because the first one seemed so behind the curve but this one hopefully plays catch up and represents development and the finished product .

Incidentally I prefer the idea that Alfrid just disappears of the edge of the story, he probably ends up as a crossing dressing bag lady!
