*SPOILERS* Legolas' journey in BotFA

While there are several parts to BotFA that left me head-scratching after my first viewing, the only one I completely don't understand is... **Spoilers below** Why did Legolas want to go to Gundabad? Surely he wasn't planning to head off an army by himself (or with Tauriel and himself alone). When they got there it seemed like he was going to enter Gundabad for some purpose, what was it? Or was he just looking for an excuse to get Tauriel away from Kili? I can't think of any logical reason why he would go there at all. What did I miss?
'There is some woe that lies upon you... Why will you not tell me more?' 'For that woe is past,' said Galadriel; 'and I would take what joy is here left, untroubled by memory. And maybe there is woe enough yet to come, thought still hope may seem bright.'

Legolas explained that in the fight in Laketown, he observed that Bolg and his crew were wearing sigils of Gundabad. Legolas wanted to go and investigate there, to see whether anything untoward was happening there.

The film make us think that Gundabad is near the Lonely Mountain which is utterly wrong.

But also, it is GUNDABAD, the orc capitol. Of course bad stuff is going to be going on there. Legolas noticing Gundabad markings on Bolg and some of the orcs should have been all the information he needed. Going there was completely pointless. Certainly an army from Gundabad should have been expected. And again, what did Legolas expect to do there? Two against all of Gundabad?!? It seemed to me like he expected for Gundabad to be empty and he intended to enter it for some reason. (Seeking his mother?) The only things that make a little sense to me are if Legolas did it just to get Tauriel away from Kili for a while or because he wanted an excuse to refused to return to the Woodland Realm after Tauriel's banishment.

...from the films was that (in the opinion of Legolas) the place was not supposed to be a hive of military preparations. Possibly due to the war that occured there in the movieverse?
