Currently at 61% after 159 reviews. Desolation of Smaug ended with about 215, so we should expect another fifty or so reviews before the meter settles. Unless we get a wave of positive ones, this film could very well have a lower score than AUJ (and barely hang onto a 'Certified Fresh' rating). Disappointing, but ah well. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/..._of_the_five_armies/

As far as i know only movies with 70 or above get the certified fresh stamp. AUJ didn't get one.

It needs 75% to get certified fresh, right?

Well, that seems like wishful thinking indeed at this point. I was so wrong when I made my prediction - I never expected this freefall to happen. I thought it would land at 80%. How wrong I was!

And that the tomato-meter is kind of a stupid concept. Penguins of Madgascar has 73%. Haven't seen it, and not trying to criticize it, but I find it hard to believe that BOFA is more than 10 points worse than it. Just goes to show how arbitrary the tomato-meter can be when comparing movies across genres.

It's not going to be 'Certified Fresh', but at least it's not 'Rotten'. I'm a little taken aback by how quickly the reviews turned against this film. It was looking like it would at least match DoS's score after the first few waves.

when the reviews started coming in for AUJ (before I even saw it) that critics weren't really going to give this trilogy a chance. They wanted it to be The Lord of the Rings, or they wanted it to be short because attention spans are at an all time history of the world low. When I did see AUJ on opening day and realized that while it wasn't LOTR, it was still very good, I made a judgment that critics opinions will have no sway on my feelings or thoughts about this trilogy. And yes, Rotten Tomatoes is incredibly stupid. I spent a lot of time editing Richard Roeper's movie review videos for his website, and while I really respect the guy and often listen to his opinions, I thought his rating system was flawed. He would give 'Fast and the Furious 7' a 4/5 or 5/5 because 'it delivered what was expected of it' which wasn't that it was masterful film, but that it was the right amount of action and fun etc...and he would give a cinematic masterpiece the same rating. I don't understand how this makes sense or is appropriate. You can't give Fast 7 and Citizen Kane the same rating because they both delivered on expectations, IMO.

the criticisms haven't affected my enjoyment of the films -- just think its funny that PJ made a movie that both satisfied me, and some previous concerns of the critics (BOFA has the shortest runtime and is pretty concise and quick-paced) but its getting ranked lower than both AUJ and DOS.

The score for any Hobbit movie would be up by 15-20% if PJ would shoot it on Film not digital (no HFR) and if there would be only two movies.
