would not have been consistent with the book. What he did once Sauron retreated to Mordor was immediately begin searching the Gladden Fields for the Ring and they hinted toward that by having Saruman say that Sauron couldn't regain his full strength without it. I liked it being left the way it was. It leads pretty well into FOTR without telegraphing Saruman's plot line there.

Elrond and Galadriel know sauron is ALIVE AND WELL. Couldn't they knock on saruman's door and be like … hey saruman have you dealt with sauron yet ??

I too liked that it didn't broadcast Saruman's betrayal from a mile away. As for Gandalf or Galadriel showing up to his door....they already knew at the beginning of Fellowship that Sauron had taken up residence in Mordor, so I don't know what else they could have done? Have Saruman go to Mordor, defeat Sauron, then Sauron returns in the exact same place again 60 years later?

AND a HUGE MINUS for the whole movie. In the trailer. You see Saruman say "Leave Sauron to me!" and Sauron stands in his fiery spirit form atop of those stairs.... Meaning they will fight! But no no.... It was not. I hope Saruman will fight Sauron in the EE or it's FALSE MARKETING! EDIT: And in that sentence, when Sauron already was banished from Dol Guldur... Leave Sauron to me screamed to me "I will build my own army of orcs and take the Ring for my own and defeat Sauron that way" like he does in the LOTR trilogy.......

As far as I am concerned this whole battle wizard scenario that PJ has indulged diminishes their power. They are Istari, the movers and shakers in Middle Earth, they don't run around beating the crap out of each other. These characters should be way more subtle than PJ has handled them at times. The DolGuldur duel sequences and the portrayal of Sauron in DoSmaug were much better, more menacing, but as soon as we get spinning wizards and the bish, bash, bosh Yoda treatment the gravitas is lost.

... and actually I thought it worked well. It was left ambiguous, but I believe it worked with the dialogue before. Like most I would like to see more of Dol Guldur and slightly surprised it was wrapped up so early on and so swiftly. It does lead well into FOTR though.

You learn what happened when you watch Fellowship. And for those who've already seen or read the other trilogy, the line is full of dramatic irony.

But at least we got to see him fight the Nazgul. Its just weird that Saruman is supposed to be more powerful than Gandalf, but Saruman didn't take on Sauron like Gandalf did. Hoping for more in the EE. Also, the editing was a tad weird in that Galadriel vs Sauron fight...
All you have to decide is what to do with the time that has been given to you...
