A tree topper reminiscent of a candle flame. It has been decorating our Christmas trees as long as I can remember (twenty-so years).

I don't have a Christmas tree. It's just me at home and I decided a couple of years ago that it's pointless to dress up the house when I only see it.

But I do a garland in the 'archway' (not really an arch) between the living room and dining room where I hang all my inspired-by-nature ornaments. In the middle of that, I hang this translucent plastic 3-D thing that's vaguely snowflake-ish and maybe vaguely star-ish but it's not either. My intention is 'vaguely snowflake-ish'

Or rather, there will be an angel. We just got our tree today and haven't decorated it yet!

so it doesn't have a lone "top" and what goes where depends on the shape of that year's bunch ; there are usually angels and birds somewhere in the upper reaches.

...Wifey insists on naming the Father Christmas figure on top of our tree "Saturn". For Saturnalia. December 17–23. One of the compromises of a Southern Baptist/Dianic Pagan marriage.

Not everyone does this, even in America. To be honest, my kids have triees, because they have young kids that expect them. But I haven't had a tree for about 15 years.

We haven’t had a big tree for years. Since the kids have grown (as well as the grandkids) we have just had a small (about 2 foot) tree (nothing on top) that we set on a chest by the front window. My wife runs a few sets of lights here and there in strategic spots around the living room. Outside I have a set of red lights decorating a small plum tree. They come on at dusk and off at dawn automatically. I just leave them up year-round (they can’t be seen when I unplug them) – handy…. My neighbor decorates his eaves around Thanksgiving and doesn’t take them down till the end of Jan…. By this time it’s “Humbug” for me.

It's a sort of medium sized, white, sparkly star that you plug in so it turns clockwise and there are multicolored lights in the back that shine through it. We have an angel tree topper too but it's top heavy and falls off any tree, so we prefer the star.

Looks pretty much like this except I've kept it trimmed to about 8' tall (max) and kept it in a nice round shape. I'm only assuming it's a plum as it's never produced anything eatable .. Really I'm only guessing as it was on our property when we moved in.

Thanks for the info Brethil. I only knew it wasn't a pear tree as I've never seen a partridge in the vicinity... ha

Now that the cat is getting older, she doesn't climb the tree anymore, but when she was younger we'd find the angel half-off the tree some mornings. After the first 3 times having the whole tree come down we learned to bunge-cord the thing to the wall!

Hand-crafted according to family tradition: cut out of a cardboard box, wrapped in aluminum foil, held on to the tree by a rubber band. None of those fancy sparkly tree toppers for us!

I like the look of it Plus, to be bluntly honest, and this may sound really crass, but having an angel on top always gave me the impression of something rather....uncomfortable going up her skirt And I think bows on top of trees just look overdone, IMHO.

this year we don't have room for a Christmas tree, on account of Uncle Baggins' boxes of teapots, so we'll probably just set up a little tree that came with a star already on top. The only decorations we'll have room to add are the very important cardboard stars with photos of family members who have died, a tradition started in our church. I did love that angel though, a brown-robed woodland angel with a very sweet face.
