Where Have All the Elves Gone? Can't Post

Before Galadriel sailed into the West, she called a Council of the Elves in Rivendell. They came from Lothlorien, from Lindon and the Havens, from Mirkwood, and from all the green hills and forests East and West of the mountains.
“So,” said Galadriel, at the end of the first day. “It is decided: some of us will take ship for Elvenhome, and some will stay, for their hearts belong to Middle-earth. It is for those Elves that we must now take thought.
“Listen,” she said, “our time – the time of the Elves – is over. It is now the time of Men, and what we have seen of it is only the beginning of all the changes they will make in Middle-earth before their time is ended. Yet already we have seen what Men do when they come into the wild places of the world. They slash and burn, they till and plant, and the creatures of the wild must flee before them or die. And already there are those among Men with the mind of Saruman, the mind of metal and wheels. Their time will come also.
“For the present, it matters not; the wild places are many and Men are few. But they will multiply. And when the wild places are bounded by their walls and fences, and the smoke and dirt of their cities fills the air, where then will you hide? For the Men of that time will be Elf-Friends no longer. No: if you would stay in Middle-earth, you must learn to hide in the light…”

So – how do you recognise an Elf? Beauty, grace and exceptional agility, that goes without saying. Pride (not to say snootiness). An air of ancient wisdom. Pointed ears and deep, compelling eyes. They appear in mortal guise, of course – outright immortality would be too revealing - but they are notoriously difficult to kill.

Which is why they are said to have nine lives.

They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters, these see the works of the Lord, and His wonders in the deep. -Psalm 107
