So how did the dwarves know Smaug's name? Can't Post

What did he do? Sit down, have tea, introduce himself and scout out the place first? Send the dwarves an eviction notice 30 days prior as applicable by law? Scrawl his name outside saying "Smaug lives here?" afterwards?

Feel free to present your wildest theories! Sly

"I am Smaug the Golden" [In reply to] Can't Post

Didn't Smaug calls himself by his own name in the book? It has been a long time since I read the book.

Also when Bilbo calls him by his name Smaug is surprised that the Hobbit is familiar with it although the dragon never smelled one of Bilbos kind before. So Smaug is well aware of his own name and not surprised by it.

Smaug is someone who loves himself the most. He is highly intelligent and believes he is the greatest and most fearsome being in the world and that everyone should know and fear him. That's why I'm sure that he'll uses that name while attacking Dale, Erebor and perhaps even before. "Yes run! Run for your lives. It matters not... I am fire. I am death... I am Smaug the Golden and I am coming for you!"

Basically that's what I expect from him in BOTFA. Mocking Bard and the people of Lake-town.

Another theory [In reply to] Can't Post

Ok, but since he is a talking dragon, would it really make sense that he conquered Erebor mute? A few of the surviving dwarves heard and remembered the name. Also, Smaug and his name was probably already well known from travellers in the North who may have encountered him and his victims.

The truth sometimes lies hidden in the long past.. [In reply to] Can't Post

Smaug was raised in the village of “Whence Came Dragons”, long, o, long ago.
Recent tattered scrolls were found to be of great import as it tells that his mother named him Snooky.

You see, it seems that Smaug was his surname! Of course he hated the name Snooky Smaug and upon reaching maturity he toasted everyone and anyone that knew his forename and became just plain Smaug, the Chiefest and Greatest of Calamities.

But, sneaking off in daylight takes much more cunning.

Here it goes: [In reply to] Can't Post

-Due to local annexation laws, Smaug had to issue a notice of imminent domain prior to invading Erebor. Obviously, the Dwarves did not take the notice seriously.

-Smaug posted a sign that read "Future home of Smaug's Hoard."

-The recent release of "Who's Who of the Dragons of the North" providing handy reference for towns recently razed to identify their attacker.

-Smaug sent out one those "So how was your attack?" surveys, for customer service reasons.

-Obviously, Smaug lost his wallet in the attack. No one really wanted to give it back to him.
