What are you going to look forward to after this last movie comes out? Can't Post

It's going to be quite a dark hole we're all plunging in. I've been a silent lurker on these forums and sites for years, but I suddenly just thought: holy crap. For years, we had the Hobbit to look forward to, but I just really don't see the Silmarillion happening any time in the next decades.

What are we Tolkien fans to do after the Hobbit?

First, the EE. [In reply to] Can't Post

Then, I guess, my next read-through of LotR and the new book from Hammond & Scull.

Star Wars 7, mostly for the score.

How To Train Your Dragon 3, again mostly for the score.

Yes, the EE. [In reply to] Can't Post

I still have the DOS EE to go through, so I'll be busy around the holidays. Wink

And the Reading Room will be continuing on as ever; I'm excited to journey through LOTR with everyone there.

Plus, there are always things in films to talk about as time goes on. Sometimes once we can step back and take a deep breath, much can be talked about in depth.

Tl;dr: Plenty to do around here. Tolkien's books shall last, as will this community of fans.

Lots of stuff [In reply to] Can't Post

Not much of it Tolkien related, but a lot of it is stuff I probably wouldn't have been exposed to if not for my discovery of Middle-earth all those years ago.

The Battle of the Five Armies Extended Edition, the remaining seasons of Game of Thrones (as well as GRRM's A Song of Ice and Fire novels), the new Star Wars films, the Starz television series Outlander (which I've just discovered and have fallen in love with), and much more...

Tolkien's writings opened up my mind to so many different things and have caused me to discover and adore so much in the realm of literature, cinema and television. So, for me, there will always be something to look forward to. Smile

"The danger with any movie that does as well as this one does is that the amount of money it's making and the number of awards that it's got becomes almost more important than the movie itself in people's minds. I look at that as, in a sense, being very much like the Ring, and its effect on people. You know, you can kind of forget what we were doing, if you get too wrapped up in that."

Vikings [In reply to] Can't Post

The third season begins next April I think. It's really good so far. Also around April 2015, Fast and Furious 7 is due for release.

Apart from those things, Guillermo has a new movie (Crimson Peak) hitting theatres next fall. So yeah not bad...

Eta actually the RR is kicking off another read through and discussion of "Lord of the Rings" which should take the better part of a year if not longer.

Survival [In reply to] Can't Post

Not just surviving the emotions of the story, but knowing this is the last of the long journey into Tolkien's world. I'm so sad... I wish wish wish it wasn't over.

I hope the last scene is Bilbo receiving visitors Balin and Gandalf at Bag End. It's as meaningful as Sam returning home to Rosie after the Havens.

I think quite a few people [In reply to] Can't Post

will be saving up to go to New Zealand and take some of the organized location tours or just to explore the place on their own. For each person, it depends on how realistic a goal that is. But for those who make it down there, the experience of New Zealand as Middle-earth is as exciting as the films themselves, if not more so.

I just finished an umpteenth re-reading of the Hobbit, LotR, the Sil, Unfinished Tales, and the Tolkien Reader. Maybe I'll go take another look at some of the HoME volumes.

When Canon Ends: Guide to Fanfiction [In reply to] Can't Post

There are hundred of excellent, well-written and imaginative fanfiction for Tolkien's works. They range all over Tolkien's work:

* Exploring what happens when a King of elves sails West ( http://elfringham.dsl.pipex.com/lotrfic/takeyourplace.html )
* Touching moments of friendship among the Fellowship ( https://www.fanfiction.net/s/1446250/1/Gifts-of-Life )
* Inquiries into hobbit biology ( https://archiveofourown.org/works/682108/chapters/1251387 or https://archiveofourown.org/works/731587 )
* Explorations of dwarrow culture, religion and family (https://archiveofourown.org/works/649553/chapters/1181647 or https://archiveofourown.org/works/855528/chapters/1637607)
* Experiments in seeing what one small change could make ( http://www.henneth-annun.net/stories/chapter.cfm?stid=4097 or https://www.fanfiction.net/s/698969/1/Boromir-s-Return )
* Epic adventure stories ( https://archiveofourown.org/works/2140059 - warning, I don't think the author is a native English speaker and the grammar shows it, but the epic and lore-integrated plot makes up for it. The rest of the series is worth a read too)

Fanfiction is awesome, and there's an amazing amount of it. To start exploring high-quality stuff, focus on awards:

http://www.viragene.com/tolkien/ - Mithril Awards Archive
http://mefawards.org/ - Middle Earth Fanfiction Awards

or recommendation communities:

http://fancake.dreamwidth.org/ - recs for all fandoms organized by theme
http://crack-van.livejournal.com/tag/lord%20of%20the%20rings - archive of Lord of the Rings recommendations, includes some Silimarilien recs
http://crack-van.livejournal.com/tag/the%20hobbit - archive of Hobbit recommendations, probably includes some Silimarilien recs
http://gensplosion.dreamwidth.org/ - Recommendations for fics without any romance
http://epic-recs.dreamwidth.org/ - Recommendations for lengthy, plotty fics
http://crossovers.dreamwidth.org/ - Recommendations for fics set in more than one work

I have tons of hobbies, my job, my family, etc. I have things I'm looking forward to in all of them (Guild Wars 2 Wintersday update! And the last update included a lore library!). But when I want more of Middle Earth, I can always rely on my fellow fans to have my back.

I'm looking forward to... [In reply to] Can't Post

Avengers: Age of Ultron, as my next movie to get geeky about (though not quite as much as here...)

And I plan to read The Children of Hurin, having just completed my first full read of The Silmarillion just a week ago. (with thanks to Ask Middle-Earth's readalong tumblr blog)

Though I go to NZ twice a year, I am usually tied down in Auckland without a car. For my next trip - darn it! I am going to hire a car and drive to Hobbiton for the day! Considering our family used to holiday near Matamata, it's a trip long overdue.
And at long last, I can talk properly to my step-bro who works for Weta - or rather, he'll be able to talk to me - the non-disclosure deal will be off! (except, I guess, for final EE material).

I remember LOTR revived an interest in wearing jewellery, which I had given up, because I loved the Evenstar pendant and what it represented. I am interested to see what naturally arises from my TH viewings.

Ultimately, it won't be over for me until the release of the BotFA EE. That's the way I felt after RotK. It wasn't over. And the discussions here on TORn went on and on.
I may eventually find myself spending more time in the Reading Room.

OK, that's the coming year. Ask me the same question this time next year and I may be a little more despondent. Unsure
