Lord of the Rings Digital Painting - Aragorn and Arwen Can't Post

I've been pretty excited at the prospect of new LOTR movies, so I decided to do a painting Here's one I did of Aragorn and Arwen in Adobe Photoshop. It took roughly 9 hours. Comments welcome! Wink

I like the shift and overall colorization. But is colorization a word ? Anyway, its good to see artists going back to these subjects. Really great ones live a long time.

So many questions! [In reply to] Can't Post

I really want to learn how to do this in Adobe Photoshop (I have CS2), and while I have been able to scan in images and color them in a cartoonish, 2-3 tone style, I have yet to even try something of that detail!

*How large is the image?
*Did you tend to use a separate layer for every color on the skin, or did you just add and blend as you continued? I saw a separate layer for the hair; was that part of the background layer?
*I see that many times you resized and/or moved parts of the shape. Did you do the moving by simply selecting a part of the image and shifting it? How in the world did you resize it?
*Were you using the dodge tool to get the light tones in the hair? I assume you were simply using the brush to make the strands?
*For the pattern on Aragorn's shirt, did you just select one of the brush patterns?

Wow, this was just amazing. Hope you're still around to answer my inquiries XD

>*How large is the image?

600dpi, 8.5"X11". Probably large enough to print poster-sized and still look decent.

>*Did you tend to use a separate layer for every color on the skin, or did you just add and blend as you continued? I saw a separate layer for the hair; was that part of the background layer?

No, I had a layer for Aragorn, Arwen, Aragorn's hair, Arwen's hair, aragorn's tunic, and aragorn's necklace (and a black background with minor details)

>*I see that many times you resized and/or moved parts of the shape. Did you do the moving by simply selecting a part of the image and shifting it? How in the world did you resize it?

Yes. lasso tool is my friend. Then [ctrl]+T to free transform. Then, doctor it with my brush. I try to use is sparingly, though, because it can make the image start looking muddy.

>*Were you using the dodge tool to get the light tones in the hair? I assume you were simply using the brush to make the strands?

Um, I used mainly a lighter color for the highlights, though I use a regular brush in color dodge mode very often. Yes, I used about a 4px or larger or smaller size brush, depending on the effect I was going for.

>*For the pattern on Aragorn's shirt, did you just select one of the brush patterns?

Nope, drew them by hand.

Wow, that is a lot of questions, but it's no problem at all; I like to have the chance to talk to someone about Photoshopping :) I don't really know anybody else who uses PS. Anyway, I really like your LOTR painting. Is it done in PS? It's very artistic, and it stands out from your other work on your Deviant Art website.

It's pastel [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm mostly a pencil artist, though I do like to dabble in pastel, as well. I've been exploring watercolor, though I'm not all that good at it. And I recently got a copy of Photoshop, and while I've experimented a lot with manipulation for photography, I have only done a little bit of painting.

Thanks for answering all of my questions- I appreciate it!

Wow, [In reply to] Can't Post

that's really fantastic. I've been using photoshop a lot recently, but I've never tried painting in it, since I dont have a tablet. Do you find photoshop to be a sufficient program for all your digital paintings? I've heard of another program that's specifically for digital painting, but I can't remember the name of it. It seems like you didn't even start out with a rough sketch, and just kind of drew it on the fly as you painted. That must have made it even harder. Really awesome stuff!

Coming to theaters, Summer 2012...
