Sean Astin has admitted he didn't know who Sir David Jason was when he signed up to star with him in the new Terry Pratchett TV adaptation.
The 37-year-old actor, best known for playing a hobbit in The Lord Of The Rings, plays tourist Twoflower in The Colour Of Magic, which will be shown on Sky One at Easter.
Sean revealed: "I hadn't heard of [Sir David] before starting this, so I went to HMV and asked if they had any David Jason stuff and walked out with £1,000 of Only Fools And Horses, Open All Hours, Darling Buds Of May and I've watched a lot of it."
He added: "I watched Only Fools And Horses in about a week. I fell in love with the old man, but then he died and that sucked. I love Rodney. I love that show."
Sean said he decided to do The Colour Of Magic a lot quicker than The Lord Of The Rings, because he knew more about it.
"They didn't have to ask twice. I knew the books because I'd met Terry Pratchett in New Zealand, I knew the character of Twoflower because of talking about The Colour Of Magic with a friend.
"It didn't take a second, which was the opposite of my experience with The Lord Of The Rings where I'd never heard of it, I knew exactly what The Colour Of Magic was."
I forget... is this an animated or live-action movie... and is it a kids' movie?

and it's not for kids. Too much subtle humor and random references. I'm surprised they got Sean to play Twoflower though considering in the books he's from the Agatean Empire and clearly "Asian".

I think he can do little, fussy, and somewhat dim just fine. It's David Jason for Rincewind that has me scratching my head. He's WAAAAY too old for the part, and even shorter than Sean. I would have cast Rhys Ifans as Rincewind, myself, or Mackenzie Crook.

Sky recently did a live adaptation of The Hogfather, a Terry Pratchett christmas story, and it was pretty good. I guess the success of Hogfather has encouraged more Discworld adaptations to be made.
Recruiting Sean Astin seems like a shrewd move to bring in LotR fans, and maybe sell the program to the US (British TV would like to follow the US in movie-style big-budget TV series like Lost/Heroes).
I'm all for it as I've been waiting for Discworld adaptations for aaaages! The humour, and imagination of TP makes them a fantastic read. He's quite provocative in terms of introducing issues of diversity and the nature of belief/science into his fantasy world view.
Hopefully they will adapt his best books- Guards, Guards! and Wyrd Sisters. Thanks for posting interview dyedye!

It's pretty good. I rented it through Netflix.
I play about with casting Guards! Guards! sometimes. I think Simon Pegg would make a good Sam Vimes. Robbie Coltrane is perfect for Sgt. Colon. Alas, Brendon Fraser's probably getting a little too old to play Carrot now. Carrot needs to be huge, handsome, and a bit dim-looking (although he isn't, really).
Nobby Nobbs is the tricky one.

Maybe I spoke too soon on this adaptation!  David Jason has a big following in the UK and will guarantee an audience, but he's too old, too short and not mean and cowardly enough for Rincewind. Your suggestion of Mackenzie Crook is spot on!
I reckon Tony Robinson would make a good Nobby Nobbs (he's a old British comedy actor if you haven't come across him).
I saw the Wyrd Sisters adaptation- not bad but pretty low budget. Because the humour of Pratchett comes from introducing the real world into our imaginary worlds (whether they are fairy tales, mythologies, religions...) live action is definitely the best way to tell his stories.

Is that David Jason played Albert in the production of Hogfather, and was very good in that role... I always saw Rincewind as Nigel Planer... But then I don't like the Rincewind books... I'm holding out for a production fo Guards Guards or Wyrd Sisters... Hugh Laurie would be perfect for Sam Vimes, doing the hard-bitten thing that made him so good in House... As for Wyrd Sisters, Dawn French as Nanny Ogg, Miranda Richardson as Magrat and Maggie Smith as Granny. Now that would be awesome!!!

the witches and the Guards, myself. The Rincewind books were always the weakest to me.
Dawn French & Maggie Smith - perfect. But Magrat should be younger than Miranda is now. Anne Marie Duff?

Magrat is younger. I've not seen Anne Marie Duff in anything...
I'm thinking of someone like Jane Horrocks in Ab Fab, but less dim, or... Not sure.. I'll think.
But to see Sam Vimes on screen would be ace. A true anti-hero.
