Thranduil Appreciation Thread Part XXII
|
|
|
Wow, twenty-second part of the Elvenking's Appreciation thread. Give ourselves a collective pat on the back, fellow Thralls (Spoiler avoidance alert: There be spoilers since TAXVIII due to the DOS EE release. Viewing in threaded mode is a better way to go about it if you're keen to avoid them, as you can check the sub-thread titles before you see anything you might regret... though what's to regret when it comes to Thranduil Pretty!, eh?)
Any and all appreciation of Thranduil and everything related to him happens here. All Thranduil Thralls, and appreciating non-Thralls are welcome. So feel free to jump in at any time! (Clicky!)
The Thranduil Appreciation thread count: I | II (Originating threads by Rowan Greene) | III | IV | V | VI (Threads by Lurker in the Mirk) VII (Thread by Eruvandi) | VIII | IX | X | XI | XII | XIII | XIV (Threads by Lurker in the Mirk) XV (Thread by Eruvandi) | XVI (Thread by Lurker in the Mirk) | XVII (Thread by VValar) | XVIII XIX | XX | XXI (Threads by Lurker in the Mirk) NOTE: Please read the "IMPORTANT README for TA posters: Information on posting, and adding images" and the little PSA from the mods.

A bit of silliness in the Fan Art board ribbing everything in and about the Thralldoms of Thranduil and that disagreeable (among other things) Dwarf (see "T&T"). Unexpected Flash of Elf (aka UFE): Those moments in the TH BTS, Vlogs when Thranduil/LP flashes by. See also "BTS Easter Egg Find", "Ninja-Hugger" Woodland Weekend (aka WW): Occasional mega URL laden post for Pretty! of Thranduil, and LP. May also include goodness for Legolas, *cough*That disagreeable (among other things) Dwarf*cough* and some others. Selective indiscrimination is key. See also "Pretty!", "High Thud Risk" [Click here for the general TORnspeak lexicon] Keeping track of the appreciation Caught off-guard at how much you've missed? 1 simple click will ensure you won't miss another update again. Put this thread on watch! Locate the "Watch thread" button to the top and right of this post (button 3 of the 5 threads buttons you see) and click it. Also, if you click on the "creation" bit in the "Age" column (last one) when you view a forum, it changes to "activity", and you get a list of threads which has been recently posted to, instead of when they were started. It's a much easier way to find the current TA thread since someone will probably post in it, and it usually appears on page 1 of the activity view. Certainly beats going back through the board to look for it.

Did anyone ever find out for sure what it was intended for? I still want to believe it was intended for the feast of Starlight, but the red makes it look very Throne Room Appropriate.

A couple of responses to TA XXI [Hobbit and Silmarillion book spoilers]
[In reply to]

Response to Hmm...dragons [possible spoilers] by Lurker:
Though most Dragons had retreated into the far North quite early on, right? I just doubt Thranduil would encounter one unless he set out northwards for an adventure specifically. Plus with all the orc nests between Mirkwood and those remote Dragon lairs... I don't know. But, movie-wise, I guess they wanted to have Smaug not be the Anomaly of Existence, so they looked for the opportunity to insert a line about other Dragons, and saw the chance to add some drama in the T&T scene. Before I reply, I need to correct something I said in my post that you responded to because I just realized I said that Glaurung was around in the Second Age, and he was actually around in the First Age. Oopsie. With that correction in mind, it's not clear when exactly Thranduil was born, so whether he was born in the First or Second Age is the thing that IMO would determine if he was more or less likely to have encountered dragons without going northwards for an adventure. IF he was born in the First Age, he would have definitely faced dragons during the War of Wrath because his father, Oropher spent his early life in Doriath and therefore they both would have been part of the elven "gleanings of Doriath and Gondolin" who went to live by Sirion and the sea after the two cities fell. If I interpreted my Silm reading correctly, it sounded like just about any elf left in Beleriand at that time would have by default been part of the War of Wrath which occurred after Earendil sailed to Valinor and got the Valar to take pity on Men and Elves and finally defeat Morgoth. During the War, Morgoth released the winged dragons of Angband as a last resort and they were so strong they started to even drive back the Valar. Earendil ended up having to sail out of the sky with a flock of Eagles to defeat the dragons. If Thranduil was born in the Second Age, however, then yes, he probably would have been much less likely to encounter a dragon. Re that dragon size chart: Wow! If that's accurate, Ancalagon would have been HUGE! I don't know if you've seen the first How to Train Your Dragon movie, but I guess he would be comparable in size to that creepy, multi-eyed Mother of all Dragons that Hiccup and Toothless defeated. No wonder he broke the towers of Thangorodrim when he fell! Reply to Lurker's post about Tailypo The cover of the Tailypo book and the story itself seem soooo familiar, but I don't know where I've seen it before. I don't think there was any childhood trauma involved, anyway. Re Thranduil dressed as Smaug: LOL! Re sudden art improvement comic: Yeah, I could use some of that too. And finally...CONGRATULATIONS to Lurker for making it to Valinor! I'll get there eventually! I'll have to do more responses when it's not almost time for bed.

Woah I can't hardly wait anymore. Only 2,5 more days.... Btw what do you think about the *SPOILER* 'mystery' character in the BOFA trailer, who is Saruman. That isn't such a mystery now is it? It was well known he would be in the film, he even was part of the DG scene on the large Comic Con banner. Too bad we won't see any Celeborn (I had my money on him if it was a true mystery character who would make an appearance).

Thranduil being born in the First or Second Age
[In reply to]
|

If Thranduil was alive during the First Age, it is safe to assume he indeed would have participated in the War of Wrath. That was so great and terrible, the largest battle ever to have taken place in ME. So unless he was still a cute and tiny Elfling at that time (awww ), he would have fought. And totally OT, wouldn't that be an awesome film adaptation if PJ ever decides to film ME again? Still, as we know, Thranduil fears the south after the War of the Ring (But there was in Thranduil's heart a still deeper shadow. He had seen the horror of Mordor and could not forget it. If ever he looked south its memory dimmed the light of the Sun, and though he knew that it was now broken and deserted and under the vigilance of the Kings of Men, fear spoke in his heart that it was not conquered for ever: it would arise again). Don't you think the War of Wrath surely would have made a similar impact on him? Though he did not lose his father in that battle but a lot of his kinsman would have died there. The way I read the passage is the War of the Ring-battle would have been his first great battle in which he lost his father, 2/3 of his father's (and eventually his own) army and with the knowledge evil still wasn't defeated. Which means he would have been born somewhere in the Second Age, perhaps when his father already esteblished Eryn Lasgalen? What are your thoughts about it?

Re Lurker's post about the ME Dragons What a cool and interesting picture of the ME dragons. It seems as if the first three dragons don't differ that much in size. But boy is that Glaurung an ugly one And the dragen of the War of Wrath looks very similiar to Smaug, only ten times bigger Angalog is just...... enormous! Thanks for sharing that piccie and putting the dragons in a bit of perspective (I would be so scared if I ever stumbled across one of them, I would probably forget to run away from it all together. Then again I have this irrational deep-rooted fear for the 'little' spiders hanging from my wall as well, causing a total psychological meltdown whenever I see one dangling at eye level. I would not survive very long in ME I'm afraid).
