Am i being a curmudgeon?

In the last two days, there have been 8 new threads on The Hobbit movie board, each of which have contained one or two mildly spoilery images (of Thorin, Fili, Kili or Thranduil) from the DOS:EE and BO5A. I know there is a lot of excitement, much of which has probably died down a bit, but should all of these have been condensed into "New images from DOS:EE/BO5A movie" threads. It's too late now, but it would make my life easier when compiling Hobbit Headlines. . Every time one is posted, it's pushing another off my screen. Or, I'm just being a curmudgeon? Why are there no new images of Galadriel or Tauriel? That, or I'm evil and I want the mods to suffer with extra work. Just a thought.

I need to think this through... Yes, yes, there will be cakes, but only sensible ones like nice Madeira cakes with lemon icing. And manly fruit cakes. All emoticons and love hearts will be banned, and excess punctuation will be edited immediately and harshly. Images may be no larger than 1cm squared.

It's really hard to keep threads condensed

We can't merge threads at all, and all we can do is catch the duplicates and lock them. We don't catch all of them, especially when the boards are moving so quickly, but it's a job requiring constant vigilance. Regarding spoilers, we periodically remind people about our spoiler policy, but if you really want to remain unspoiled, it's probably best to stay away from the Hobbit forum until you've seen the EE or the movie.

the Hobbit board is very volatile these days, and we look to our long-time members to provide leadership to our community. The admins are stretched pretty thin, and we rely on all of you to help us out.

to share the cakes, and celebrate the diversity of all emoticons. I may even learn to love excess punctuation. *tries really, really hard.* I know I was pushing it a bit with that post. Just needed a little vent, all done now.

You're all doing a fab job. (Sorry, Starling ... a curmudgeon just used the heart emoticon!) I'm just wondering whether next time (either with the trailer, the physical copy of the DOS and BO5A TE& EE release or the actual film) we could *try* and condense picture/gif threads together. When I logged on this morning, there were another 8 new threads on images/gifs regarding the DOS:EE and BO5A movie. There are two threads, here and here, which are discussing the same set of images. What works quite well with the Thranduil Appreciation Thread is that images are dumped in there for people to peruse at their own time. And this is where the curmudgeon in me is coming out ... I simply can't keep up with the threads. From a practical viewpoint, I just cannot type up Hobbit Headlines on the limited time I have. There just appears to be thread after thread with new pictures, with similar discussion going on, by the same group of users. If everything was in one big "DOS:EE Screenshot and Behind-the-scenes Picture Thread" or "New BO5A stills and images" threads, then other threads wouldn't be falling off page 1 like Niagra Falls. I'm not suggesting this type of thread should be stickied or users aren't allowed to post new images in new threads. One big thread would only be needed during major news, not all the time. I just think culminating into one thread might help slow the board down a bit. I know threads cannot be merged, so a "Big Massive Image Thread" would have to be set up beforehand. Again, it's just a thought of mine. Feel free to throw your arms up in rage.

they drove many of our oldtimers off the board entirely. It proved to be a flash in the pan however; most of those posters disappeared after the last movie & never returned.

because it has a limited number of participants, and they all understand and abide by the rules. However, the Hobbit board has hundreds of participants, and more of them arrive every day. Few of our newer members read our rules, and even the most veteran posters will not take the time to review the first page before posting if they think they have a scoop. I've locked just as many duplicate threads from our newer members as I have from our supposedly more experienced posters. Duplicate posts have existed as long as I've been here since 2002, when the first LOTR movie was released. Despite sticky notes, attempts to keep similar news in one thread, and repeated locking of threads, it still occurs. It's a fact of life on the TORN message boards, and we all have to work through it as best we can. I know the Hobbit Headlines are difficult to manage, and I commend you for making the attempt. We will do the best we can to limit the number of duplicate threads, but it's like herding cats when the news is breaking.
