Has this information been discussed before?
Peter Jackson's ‘Hobbit’ Trilogy Costs $745 Million So Far By Jason Hughes on October 20, 2014 @ 10:54 pm Financial documents show trilogy production is already the most expensive ever, even without final eight months Peter Jackson‘s “The Hobbit” trilogy is one of the biggest box office hits of all time, and it's also one of the most expensive film productions ever undertaken. With eight months left to go before the December bow of the final chapter in the epic Middle-Earth saga, financial documents filed in New Zealand this month put the production at $745 million. That figure makes it the most expensive film production on record, but it is a combined total for what amounts to three separate films. Guinness World Records estimates the most expensive production to date remains “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End,” with total production costs of $300 million. Warner Bros. declined to comment on the costs, telling the Associated Press they don't comment on production budgets. According to Box Office Mojo, the first two “Hobbit” films have earned a combined $1.98 billion at the global box office, which gives the trilogy a real chance of breaking $3 billion. Jackson's original “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy combined for a total $2.92 billion at the global box office from 2001-2003. The financial documents create a rarity in big-budget Hollywood productions, as they are unusually detailed. Warner Bros. set up a wholly-owned company to handle the massive trilogy's production, leading to public financial reports. The latest documents include breaking out $122 million that the films’ production received from local taxpayers. Tax incentives are common in the U.S. and other major countries as ways to lure big-budget films that generally provide a regional economic stimulus during production. The final chapter in the film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's “The Hobbit” stars Martin Freeman, Evangeline Lilly, Richard Armitage, Orlando Bloom, Ian McKellan and Benedict Cumberbatch as the voice of the dragon Smaug. “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” is scheduled to hit theaters Dec. 17.

Anyone care to guess at the Cost of the Cast? Someone here should fairly BE close to what Actors get... Never understood the Points system.. Amazing that, THAT kinda investment will generate such a long term CASH FLOW of this Cash COW! WOW, we get the toys, the posters, the Tie-IN goodies for years to come. Those here who saw Bomby'z two minute Video for the Contest know that my collection is extensive.. but usually wait until the prices come way down. At one point?.. our 260 minute Theatrical releases were costing about 260 million dollars to Make? Making what iz on screen a Million Dollars a Minute? Think about THAT? when watching.. ITZ Hard to imagine life without these GREAT films.

Pretty good value for the money

Considering they've already made over $1 billion of profit even minus the costs, and the third movie hasn't even been released yet, I'm sure WB can consider it money well spent.

Biggest surprise is that POTC: At World's End holds the record for previous most expensive production! I'm guessing when you have such a huge cast and crew, locations on mountain sides, and huuuuuuge amounts of CGI (and therefore man hours) the costs really do rack up!

Does that include marketing (as little as there is heh)?

Is that estimate just for the budget of the films alone without regarding the money put towards marketing? Marketing tends to cost studios 100+ million (depending on the film of course), and with these being big films, I can only guess marketing costs another 100-200 million, albeit it seems like there is very little. So I'd say closer to 1 billion would be the overall cost of these films, but with AUJ alone they made that money back so this trilogy is definitely a success for WB, and that's not even counting BOTFA's gross yet, which I think will be much higher, as it seems interest has peaked with the trailer being the #1 most viewed entertainment product on YouTube, surpassing even The Hunger Games.

But there is the income from DVDs for TEs, DVDs for EEs, three film DVD packs, streaming videos, pay per views, TV contracts to show the films and so on and so on and so on. I am not worried about them not making money. I have read that now a days, they make as much from these other money streams as they do from the theater releases. Which is why the length of theater release is getting shorter and shorter.

I'm no expert but based on past reports I've come across about specific big-budget movies and their fantastic box-office takings still not quite making back production + marketing, got to wonder and think 745 may just be production costs.
