Scenes you can *and* can't live without from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies.
|
Can't Post

Which scenes from each of the movies can and can't you live without? You have to pick 10 scenes in total, no more. No listing all Thranduil or Aragorn scenes. You don't have to pick entire scenes - there might be a particular sequence you feel passionate about. However you rank these scenes is up to you. They might be: your most/least favourite scenes, closest/furthest from Tolkien canon, best/worst CGI, best/worst acting; and so on. Feel free to explain your reasoning, and to extend this to chapters/portions from the books. Scenes I can't live without: AUJ: Gandalf and Bilbo's conversation in Bag End DOS: Flies and Spiders FOTR: Gift-giving in Lothlorien TTT: Fangorn Comes to Helm's Deep ROTK: Shelob's Lair Scenes I can live without: AUJ: Orc/Radagast chase across Rhudaur DOS: Barrels out of Bond FOTR: The Council of Elrond TTT: Gollum and Sméagol ROTK: The Nazgûl and His Prey

Please, explain why you can live without the Council of Elrond scene? Here's my list it was hard to pick just one moment from every film, but I tried my best! Scenes I can't live without: AUJ: Gandalf and Galadriel conversation (the most beautiful scene of the Hobbit trilogy so far) DOS: Bilbo killing the babyspider-thing (just a character moment I like, how he is growing attached to the Ring) FOTR: The Council of Elrond (I love council-scenes, I don't know why... perhaps because I like politics) TTT: The last march of the Ents (nature strikes back wooo!) ROTK: Arwen convinces Elrond to reforge the sword (from that moment she has the vision in the forest to the reforging itself, it is just a beautiful scene, everything about it is stunning and otherwordly) Scenes I can live without: AUJ: The Goblin King (I just think the character wasn't handled very well, he should have been more scary than comical imo. I can live without the cameo of Frodo as well...) DOS: Breakfast with Beorn (wasn't very interesting to me) FOTR: The guardian of the entrance to Moria (just another action sequence that I could easily skip) TTT: Frodo and the Nazgul in Osgiliath (but Sams speech afterwards is great, that I can't live without) ROTK: The ghost army in action (at first they try to break the mountain where they live, just to tell Aragorn that they will fight, which doesn't make any sense at all, and I also think the way they saved Minas Tirith could have looked better)

For a few I had to flip a coin. Scenes I can't live without: FOTR: Strider, from At The Inn of the Prancing Pony (but it's a tossup with Arwen at the Ford) TTT: Gandalf's fall with the Balrog ROTK: Charge of the Rohirrim (...again tossup between this and Arwen's Vision) AUJ: Galadriel to Gandalf: "Ae boe i le eliathon, im tulithon." DOS: It IS Our Fight! Scenes I can live without: FOTR: Celeborn (worst casting in all five films). TTT: Uruk-Hai meet up with Saruman's orcs (the Kiwi accents) ROTK: Deagol lands his fish (worst acting in all five films) AUJ: Weathertop (totally unnecessary) DOS: Bilbo's fight with the Giant Pauropod (worst use of an edged weapon)
Don't mess with my favorite female elf.

So it was rather difficult coming up with a scene I could live without for the movie. I picked it because I think the Council would have been better had it been more of a council - i.e. closer to the book. A complete book-to-movie adaptation of the chapter would have been tedious. However, I think the Council of Elrond could have been handled a little better. I think the film was trying to hint that the Ring was exerting its influence on the members there. Explaining Boromir's vision would have both established him better as a character (his name isn't even mentioned until they're well out of Rivendell) as well has helped develop Aragorn's storyline. Bilbo should have been present. For me, the scene is the worst of a best bunch.

I'll mull it over and come back in a couple of days. Although, I'll possibly be heavily biased by Hobbiton scenes after this weekend.

Picking one from each film is far too hard - but I'll try... Scenes I can't live without: FotR - Lothlorien (or Frodo and Sam watching the Elves) TT - Entmoot (or maybe Faramir remembering his last meeting with Boromir or Eowyn at Edoras, when the banner is torn away by the wind) RotK - Arwen's vision of Eldarion (I could just as easily have chosen the Houses of Healing, or the eagles rescuing Frodo and Sam) AUJ - At Bag End: "The world is not in your books and maps" and "Far over the Misty Mountains" (I'm calling them one scene :-) ) DoS - Feast of Starlight (this is a toss-up with Smaug confronting the golden statue; Smaug flying up into the night sky; Beorn's house.....) Scenes I can live without: FotR - Sorry, can't think of one TT - Faramir's beating up Gollum while Faramir looked on (he would never have done that or allowed it to happen) RotK - Shelob (necessary, I know, and exceptionally well realised, but I just don't like spiders or anything to do with them) AUJ - Bilbo's 'having a reaction' line (far too modern) DoS - Flies and spiders (see above!)

I can't live without: FOTR: Sequence between Rivendell and Caradhras TT: Gandalf and Aragorn discussing Frodo ROTK: Hobbits back at the Green Dragon AUJ: Entering Rivendell / Exchange with Elrond DOS: Bilbo descending into Erebor / Talk with Balin I can live without: FOTR: Nazgul chasing Arwen/Frodo TT: Warg attack ROTK: Denethor's pyre AUJ: Radagast intro DOS: Playing with Smaug sequence
"When you think of the great Battle of Pelennor, do not forget the Battle of Dale. Think of what might have been. Dragon-fire and savage swords in Eriador! There might be no Queen in Gondor. We might now only hope to return from the victory here to ruin and ash. But that has been averted -- because I met Thorin Oakenshield one evening on the edge of spring not far from Bree. A chance-meeting, as we say in Middle-earth." - Gandalf

I love every scene, and feel every part adds to the overall film, so the "can live without" was very hard for me... Scenes I Can't Live Without: AUJ: Stone-troll fight (love when the Misty Mountains theme starts up!) DOS: Barrels Out Of Bond (always get goosebumps when the scene begins the moment Bilbo falls into the river and the elves start scrambling to get them) FOTR: Battle of Amon Hen (whole sequence is just spectacular!) TTT: Frodo and the Nazgul at Osgiliath (Just love the layout of the scene, and Frodo's my favorite Middle-earth character and loved this moment of his) ROTK: Witch-king vs Gandalf (always love this scene. When the Witch-king just speaks in that epic voice "Do you not know death...", especially in high-def Blu-ray... Chills.) Scenes I Can Live Without: AUJ: Rivendell dinner scene (again, is probably the scene I could miss if I had to, although I love Elrond examining the swords) DOS: Bard giving the dwarves weapons (again, sort of a lull moment, so I could probably live without it) FOTR: Gandalf going to Saruman (man, this was a hard decision...) TTT: Elrond and Galadriel conversation (moment I could skip if I had to) ROTK: Arwen seeing Eldarion (a moment that ultimately sort of drags for me)
The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies 12/17/14 "I know what I must do. It's just... I'm afraid to do it."

Scenes I can't live without: AUJ: Bag End (from the time it switches over to younger Bilbo all the way up until he takes off running after the Dwarves) DOS: The butterfly scene in Mirkwood. FOTR: "Concerning Hobbits" TTT: Eowyn watching the flag of Rohan floating down. ROTK: "You bow to no one!" and the whole city bowing to the hobbits. (This was hard. There were lots of runner-up scenes, especially in AUJ. "Riddles in the Dark" almost edged out Bag End.) Scenes I could definitely live without: AUJ: The crazy running fight in Goblin-town, especially the part at the end. DOS: The "Morgul arrow" subplot, especially Tauriel and the athelas. (I like Tauriel, but that part was just too much for me.) FOTR: Elrond talking about how Men are untrustworthy. TTT: The Warg attack and Aragorn having a cliffie...literally. ROTK: The whole Sam/lembas/Gollum subplot and Sam leaving Frodo.

Scenes I can't live without: AUJ: Good Morning. Easily the best-adapted, straight-from-the-book scene in all five movies to date. DOS: Entering Erebor, specifically Thorin's and Balin's reactions. FOTR: Prologue. That's really just a guess. There are so many perfect scenes in that movie, so it's hard to pick just one! TTT: Arwen's future. Might be the most poignant scene in all the movies so far. ROTK: Merry's simple courage. I understand why it was cut from the TE, but I'm so glad it was inserted into the EE. Such a heartfelt scene between two great characters before potentially going to their deaths. Scenes I can live without: AUJ: The Frodo scene!! My absolute least favorite scene in all six movies. (I'm just assuming nothing in BOFA will be as bad as this scene lol). DOS: Laketown fight. FOTR: I can't think of any. Is this movie perfect or something? TTT: Old Man Willow in Fangorn (mainly because I can't think of anything else). ROTK: Gilmli's antics in the Paths of the Dead. That chapter is so eerily creepy in the book and it's reduced to a Gimli joke...

What I can't live without: AUJ - the dwarves singing at Bag End DOS - Smaug! FOTR - All of the Shire scenes in the first half of the film TTT - Gandalf's return! ROTK - The charge of the Rohirrim
