The Ent Tree Falls

Tolkien supposedly based his Ents on a favourite tree in the Oxford Botanical Gardens. My daughter studied and now works in Oxford and knows the gardens well because she once had a stunning student apartment within its walls. She has just sent me this sad video of the final days of the 'Ent' tree. http://www.oxfordtoday.ox.ac.uk/.../giant-falls-tolkien Ah, the passing of all things!

- that's just one of those things that seem to occur to people, and end up on the internet. the link between this tree and Tolkien is that the last photo of Tolkien is one of him leaning against it - this photo was published in Carpenter's biography of Tolkien in 1977. A copy of this photo, with a note from Priscilla Tolkien, was sold at Bonhams some years ago. I saw it, and other items, on one of the viewing days. Here's a link - https://www.bonhams.com/auctions/16199/lot/61/ The tree is described as Tolkien's favourite; he named it 'Laocoon' after a statue from classical times.

It's nice they made the effort of remembering the tree.
