Below, I have listed 15 quotes from The Hobbit. Can you guess who these lines belong to? Note: Some characters may be represented with more than one quote. Correct answers and scores will be posted in a few days. Good luck! 1. “I wish I had been there! I would have given them more than fireworks!” 2. “Great Elephants!” 3. “Hmmm! it smells like elves!” 4. “I like six eggs with my ham, when starting on a journey: fried not poached, and mind you don’t break ‘em.” 5. “Not that I venture to disagree with Thorin, may his beard grow ever longer; yet he was ever a dwarf with a stiff neck.” 6. “Long will I tarry, ere I begin this war for gold.” 7. “Also naughty little boys that play with fire get punished.” 8. “Well, are you alive or are you dead?” 9. “Is there no end to this accursed forest?” 10. “But lucky numbers don’t always come off.” 11. “Curse them and crush them!” 12. “Fools! Why waste words and wrath on those unhappy creatures?” 13. “I will not say if this counsel be good or bad, but I will do what can be done.” 14. “I hope I never smell the smell of apples again!” 15. “So comes snow after fire, and even dragons have their ending!”

1. “I wish I had been there! I would have given them more than fireworks!” Beorn (Queer Lodgings) 2. “Great Elephants!” Gandalf (Roast Mutton) 3. “Hmmm! it smells like elves!” Bilbo (A Short Rest) 4. “I like six eggs with my ham, when starting on a journey: fried not poached, and mind you don’t break ‘em.” Thorin (An Unexpected Journey) 5. “Not that I venture to disagree with Thorin, may his beard grow ever longer; yet he was ever a dwarf with a stiff neck.” Bombur (A Thief in the Night) Oops! I was about to write the wrong answer. It's always good to re-read. 6. “Long will I tarry, ere I begin this war for gold.” The Elvenking (The Clouds Burst) 7. “Also naughty little boys that play with fire get punished.” Gandalf (Out of the Frying-pan into the Fire) 8. “Well, are you alive or are you dead?” Bilbo (A Warm Welcome) 9. “Is there no end to this accursed forest?” That's a tough one. It comes from Flies and Spiders, of course; but I'm not sure who said it. I'm leaning towards Bilbo, because it is nicely echoed by Frodo in The Old Forest; but it sounds more like the dwarves, before deciding the burglar must climb the tree in which he sees the butterflies (or after he climbs down with no news). Thorin? Hmm... I'll guess it is the dwarves, collectively (what JRRT calls "they") 10. “But lucky numbers don’t always come off.” Smaug (Inside Information) 11. “Curse them and crush them!” Not 100% sure, but I think I can guess: The Great Goblin (Over-hill and Under-hill) 12. “Fools! Why waste words and wrath on those unhappy creatures?” Bard (Fire and Water) 13. “I will not say if this counsel be good or bad, but I will do what can be done.” Roac (The Gathering of the Clouds) 14. “I hope I never smell the smell of apples again!” Fili (A Warm Welcome) 15. “So comes snow after fire, and even dragons have their ending!” Bilbo (The Return Journey) Thank you BlackFox! That was fun.

1. “I wish I had been there! I would have given them more than fireworks!” And he would have too – Beorn 2. “Great Elephants!” Gandalf- (?) Forget the circumstances. 3. “Hmmm! it smells like elves!” Bilbo – Sniffing out Gildor & co. (?) 4. “I like six eggs with my ham, when starting on a journey: fried not poached, and mind you don’t break ‘em.” Hmm, gotta be a Dwarf – Bombur the fat one. (?) 5. “Not that I venture to disagree with Thorin, may his beard grow ever longer; yet he was ever a dwarf with a stiff neck.” I think Bombur as Bilbo takes his guard duty. 6. “Long will I tarry, ere I begin this war for gold.” The Elven-king 7. “Also naughty little boys that play with fire get punished.” Hmm, not sure. Possibly a Goblin looking up into the trees? 8. “Well, are you alive or are you dead?” Bilbo to Dwarves after freeing them from spiders. 9. “Is there no end to this accursed forest?” First thought – Bilbo. But he probably wouldn’t use the word “accursed”. So a sheer guess – Bofur 10. “But lucky numbers don’t always come off.” Smaug – conversation w/ Bilbo. 11. “Curse them and crush them!” The Great Goblin after finding Orcrist. 12. “Fools! Why waste words and wrath on those unhappy creatures?” Bard I think? Talking about Thorin & Co. 13. “I will not say if this counsel be good or bad, but I will do what can be done.” Hmmmm, Maybe the Master of Laketown – pure guess 14. “I hope I never smell the smell of apples again!” This is too easy BlackFox!! Only 13 to choose from. Thorin (??) 15. “So comes snow after fire, and even dragons have their ending!” Bilbo or Gandalf. My guess Gandalf Thanks for toasting my brain BlackFox – I need a nappy now.
"Excuse me, excuse me. What does God need with a Starship? James T. Kirk --S.T. V

...because it's usually hard for me to distinguish between the Dwarves in the book! 1. “I wish I had been there! I would have given them more than fireworks!” Beorn, I think? 2. “Great Elephants!” Gandalf, of course! 3. “Hmmm! it smells like elves!” One of my favorite Bilbo quotes. 4. “I like six eggs with my ham, when starting on a journey: fried not poached, and mind you don’t break ‘em.” The one and only Thorin. 5. “Not that I venture to disagree with Thorin, may his beard grow ever longer; yet he was ever a dwarf with a stiff neck.” One of the other Dwarves... 6. “Long will I tarry, ere I begin this war for gold.” Thranduil. 7. “Also naughty little boys that play with fire get punished.” Gandalf. I love the Oakentoon which showcases some of these original quotes, and how absolutely silly they'd be in the movie! 8. “Well, are you alive or are you dead?” Bilbo to the drenched Dwarves. 9. “Is there no end to this accursed forest?” Not sure which one of the Dwarves or Bilbo this is. 10. “But lucky numbers don’t always come off.” Smaug, I think? 11. “Curse them and crush them!” Gollum, gollum! 12. “Fools! Why waste words and wrath on those unhappy creatures?” Bard, I think, regarding the presumed-eated Dwarves. 13. “I will not say if this counsel be good or bad, but I will do what can be done.” Sounds like Elrond, but I don't think it is. 14. “I hope I never smell the smell of apples again!” I think this was Kili or Fili. 15. “So comes snow after fire, and even dragons have their ending!” Ah, Bilbo! Thanks, BlackFox, may your tail grow ever bushier!

since I read this...concentrating on the movies, you know. But here goes: 1. “I wish I had been there! I would have given them more than fireworks!” Beorn 2. “Great Elephants!” Gandalf 3. “Hmmm! it smells like elves!” Bilbo (What a quote! ) 4. “I like six eggs with my ham, when starting on a journey: fried not poached, and mind you don’t break ‘em.” Sounds obnoxious enough to be Thorin 5. “Not that I venture to disagree with Thorin, may his beard grow ever longer; yet he was ever a dwarf with a stiff neck.” Balin? 6. “Long will I tarry, ere I begin this war for gold.” The Elvenking 7. “Also naughty little boys that play with fire get punished.” Gandalf 8. “Well, are you alive or are you dead?” Bilbo 9. “Is there no end to this accursed forest?” Thorin? 10. “But lucky numbers don’t always come off.” Elrond? 11. “Curse them and crush them!” Gollum 12. “Fools!
