Fanart: Passing of the Elves, and questions [In reply to]

(Edited and expanded)

Just found this. There's no mistaking who's on the special mount.Smile

So what's your view? Would Thranduil stay in ME and fade or would he ultimately sail West and rejoin his family, which of course include Leggy. Would he meet Gimli there or would he arrive at a time when Gimli would have returned to wherever Aule summon Dwarves who passed (I don't think Dwarves are meant for immortality, regardless of the special dispensation Gimli got, or would he be extended longevity as well as part of the package)?

But before Thranduil even get there, at the start of the journey as this fanart depicted, no doubt based on Arwen's procession in RotK, would such a procession be something Thranduil wanted or did? Or would he be taking a quiet long goodbye route by himself, either by choice or because the Elves who remained in ME and yet had passport to the West would essentially have dwindled down to just him?

That is a beautiful image... [In reply to]

But it's not how I've ever pictured his life on middle-earth ending; I don't picture it ending at all. (And I know you see it differently, but hear me out.)

We know that a couple of the reasons Tolkien wrote his whole history of the Elves was to see someone speaking his invented languages and to create a possible mythology for his beloved England, according to his own view of Faerie myth. I think Thranduil would have been his choice to remain in The Wood, if only because he and his Elves are a much closer match to the tales of pre-Victorian Elves than either Galadriel and hers or Elrond and his. The Mirkwood Elves would have to remain on Arda to continue "haunting" the collective unconscious through the hundreds (?) of thousands of years it would take for us to feel the effects in the here and now. (This is much more obviously bookverse than movieverse. I have no idea what Jackson and Co. intend, or if it'll be at all apparent before the trillogy - including EEs - is over. Unimpressed )

I'd really like to believe that Gimli would have that Extra Special dispensation that would allow him and Legolas to hang out, but I know it's generally accepted (and makes sense) that he, like Sam and Bilbo and Frodo, would eventually die and go to wherever their spirits would naturally be bound. Unsure

I think Thranduil is a maverick, he's always going to be the Elf to do his own thing (though that thing is heavily influenced by the horrors of his past). And, most of the Elves under his rule were descended from the original mavericks, the wood Elves who wanted nothing to do with the trek to Valinor. *shrugs* It just makes sense to me that he and his Elves would be the ones to remain a part of Arda to the end.

     Thranduil's passing [In reply to]

Good questions!
I would very much like to think Thranduil eventually sailing West, to be reunited with Legolas Heart I imagine Legolas to be the centre of the universe as far as Thranduil's concerned (don't know if I'm right but I think Thrandy makes a great daddy Heart). Therefor I can't imagine Thranduil willingly cutting Legolas out of his life by staying in ME forever. But I'm very sentimental like that, I like my stories to have happy endings so I tend not to dwell on the ones that have the potential to end unhappy. Since Tolkien never wrote about Thranduil's sailing or staying, I'll stick with my version of events 'cause it's the one where my heart remains intact. Although I must say I find Vanima's theory very intriguing as well.

I'm not sure how long Dwarves are allowed to live in Valinor (I do think they die eventually, seeing as they aren't Firstborn) but I don't think Thranduil and he would meet in Valinor. Couldn't it be possible they've already met in ME? Surely Thranduil would have visited his son in Imladris in the years after the War, and perhaps Gimli would have been there on one or two occassions as well?

As for your last question, I don't think Thranduil would journey to the Grey Havens (and beyond) all by himself. Seeing as he is still King and there are always those who are still loyal to him and remain by his side. Also it would definitely not work for my happy ending if Thranduil decides to set out on his journey but never makes it because he gets wounded/killed along the way Unsure Noooooooo! Crazy That just wouldn't do.
Furthermore I believe when an Elf finally comes to the decision to leave ME, he/she would not need to take the long goodby tour. Thranduil is alive for many years and has probably seen every corner of ME he wishes to have seen. When the time has come, I think he would take the shortest (and safest) route to the West.

What do you think?

Great points about Thranduil's maverick coolHeart and his Elves' 'tood! And definitely complements your comment: "

So yes, I agree Thranduil will be King of the Elves in ME. For a very long time. But I imagine also that, being lesser elves, the Sylvan's hroar would be consumed faster than Thranduil's would be. And being lesser in being, their houseless fear may not be capable of cogent thoughts for ever. At some point, all that may be left of the Sylvan are half-conscious disembodied spirits, like the Huorns and ancients sentient trees the Ents shepherded. At that point, Thranduil, who I believe would stay in ME regardless of hell or high water because of his love and sense of responsibility for his subjects, will see that there's no need and no one to keep him in ME. He really doesn't
strike me as the type to accept or be satisfied with the fate of ultimately being just a diminished version of himself, a wandering forgetful spirit just roaming ME until the end of days.

And also, with the advent of Man, forests will diminish. It is sad, but I believe at some point beyond TA, there may not be any forests large enough for the Woodland Realm to endure within ME at all. Thranduil may end up moving his people out to somewhere like that little islet in the Bay of Balar just for peace's sake. In fact, I'd think they'd have to move a few times. He may also get more Elves as time passes since the other Eldar would all depart at some point, including Galadriel and Celeborn. At some point, Thranduil and his folks might be bunking in with Elrond or the twins. (OT: Hmm... would Arwen be in tow as well? Could get mighty crowded eh?)

Lastly, I feel that Thranduil will feel the tug for family, especially as his people dwindled. And he might want to spend time with the clan when he gets to the West rather than arrive there dead and languishing in the Halls of Mandos waiting his turn for re-embodiment (may be getting it wrong here but I think that's the deal with Mandos' pad). I think it's safe to say he's the one Elf who doesn't leave things to chance if he had any say in the matter. He wants things done on his terms. So when the above happens, I'd think he would make the Journey. There may be a fellow Sindar or two who have been with him since the beginning of Greenwood. But I also do not see a grand procession. He has no need for pomp at this point and there's just not enough participants anyway. And who knows, he may just make a return trip to ME after cooling his heels in the West for a couple of Ages. It's been done before. Smile

*pauses* Well, I'm still shaky on Elvenlore so the above could all be untenable crap. But yeah, that's what I think.Smile

Surely Gimli would have met Legolas' awesome daddy when they visited Mirkwood after the war. I meant would Gimli still be alive when Thranduil gets to Aman.

Yeah, I'd go with the direct route too. For different reasons though. I think Thranduil, by nature, might not visit every corner of ME. He'd focus on things that interest him - orchidsSmile for example and the Dorwinion winyards Tongue Plus some places just hold too much unpleasant memoriesUnsureUnsure But at the end, there'd be nothing to hold and tie him to ME, and so the direct route makes sense to me.

As for the rest, hope you don't mind, but my thoughts are in my response to vanima's post.

     Oh my.... [In reply to]

*prepares for onslaught of imagery*

I may have to take a day off work to devote to these (I wish!) and to deal with the resulting thuddery!

Where did that profile shot originate from? I never heard of the source - was it the Chinese mag that released the other pics?
I really really like it anyway, and it's also proving to lend itself so wonderfully to fan art.

I also like the two IMG pics you've posted above your linkee lists.
In both, you can see thought / concern in his eyes. Haven't seen these exact shots before.

While we're talking about images, has anyone ever noticed a Thranduil image appear in the 'ring' at top left of the TORn page?
I previously thought it was all images from LOTR but I have since seen TH dwarves appear. If there's no Thrandy in the rotate, we really should put our footses down. Wink
