Did Gandalf have a home? Can't Post

Saruman had Orthanc and Rdagast had Rhosgobel. Did Gandalf have a place he hung his pointy hat?

Apparently not. [In reply to] Can't Post

There seems to be good reason why Gandalf was called the Grey Wanderer. One would think that he would need someplace to call his own if only to possess an alchemical laboratory for the preparation of fireworks and other items. However, perhaps he borrowed the use of such facilities from Saruman, friendly Dwarves, or others.

lasting abodes [In reply to] Can't Post

Appendix B, The Return of The King, notes...

'The two highest of this order (of whom it is said there were five) were called by the Eldar Curunír, “the Man of Skill”, and Mithrandir, “the Grey Pilgrim”, but by Men in the North Saruman and Gandalf. Curunír journeyed often into the East, but dwelt at last in Isengard. Mithrandir was closest in friendship with the Eldar, and wandered mostly in the West, and never made for himself any lasting abode."

Perhaps he spent a lot of time in Imladris, for example, in any case, considering the span of years we are talking about here.

He did seem fond of the Shire... [In reply to] Can't Post

At first I thought it was because of the Hobbits, but then again Longbottom leaf was some wacky-tobaccy and Gandalf loved his pipe-weed. Why else would Sauruman settle there in his retirement? Wink

"Lasting" seems the key word, there. [In reply to] Can't Post

Others have mentioned the time scale here: In a life on Middle-earth of several thousand years, Gandalf could have set up housekeeping at several different places for several centuries at a pop, and it would still seem he had made no 'lasting abode'.

he is always skipping rent- the Grey Deadbeat, they call him [In reply to] Can't Post

Because Gandalf is almost universally liked everywhere, he gets to sleep everywhere. He is a frequent visitor to Imladris and the Shire, of course, and has had residencies in Minas Tirith and Lothlorien before. He seems to be familiar with Orthanc and Saruman's confusing fire escape plans. But he has no Gandalf-cave with Gandalf-mobile and butler.

The key thing is that unlike Radagast and Saruman Gandalf has never tied himself to a region- even if he does enjoy a nice bed here and there, he is not going to hang around in one place so often that they will name it after him or his profession. He is there to help everyone, so he invites no particular identification with anyone. He even went to Harad for a while, which shows how far he was willng to go in the name of the Job.

Where did he sleep in the Shire? [In reply to] Can't Post

Doubt seriously any of the inns would have Man-sized beds, and Bree is too far away. Would Bilbo have kept an oversized bed somewhere for someone who only shows up every 17 years or so?

Who needs a bed? [In reply to] Can't Post

For one who spends so much time on long journeys, I imagine he's pretty used to sleeping on the ground and in very uncomfortable situations. Some warm blankets and pillows on the floor near a good fire would be a sufficient makeshift bed for a brief visit, I think.
