If it's a dark haired Oropher it could be fuel for those who argue that Leggy actually had dark hair instead of blonde. Hair color sometimes skips a generation don't cha know. Actually, one time the subject of whether book Legolas' hair is dark or blonde came up over on the LOTR board and I got someone to explain to me what the book arguments are for dark-haired Leggy. They were pretty good arguments, IMO, but I saw blonde Leggy in the movies before I read the books so...blonde he is! Of course, even with Legolas being blonde, that doesn't mean that Oropher couldn't have had dark hair since hair color can skip generations. If Oropher had any blonde ancestors, then any one of his descendents, even two or three generations later would still have a chance of being blonde even if their parents had dark hair. And, if both Thranduil and his wife were blonde that would make it even more likely that Leggy would end up blonde despite Oropher having dark hair... Am I rambling? I feel like I'm rambling. I guess I'm just happy to have a minute to check the TA thread after the past several days being so busy with schoolwork. It really is only a minute though. I have some assignments due tonight so I have to get back to it as soon as lunch is over.

Whoa! That's incredible how much those two pic look alike. Same pose and everything! It's like, if LP himself was an elf in real life that's totally what he'd look like!

Argh, december seems to be the answer to a lot of questions these days I told a friend of mine the other day that I just could not die before december, for I just HAVE to see BofFA first. She just looked at me strangely, but I know you Hobbit/ Thranduil fans know what I'm talking about. It would be an absolute tragedy if I didn't get some answers to my questions and watch a whole lot of Pretty! first. I need to have next December too! For Pretty! EE, and time to at last view all six EEs in a sitting and then appreciate Pretty! a bit more... maybe there'll be time to throw in a fic or two too.
In Reply To My $0.02: I think he was just on his way to do a state visit, though the huge number of armoured Elves with him might mean he intended to persuade the Dwarves to hand over the White Gems by show of might. I don't think he intended any aggression. Definitely he didn't plan to be there when Smaug arrived, and therefore was not prepared for battle anyway. Even if he had intended on some military action (really not likely, given his propensity to not get involved anyway, and frankly, any Elven military action under Thranduil's command would prolly be a cakewalk victory, it's the aftermath that's the messy bit) he would have withdrawn his troops anyway upon knowing Smaug's already there, because he would not risk his people's lives unnecessarily for the forgone conclusion of Smaug's desolation. Especially not after the Dwarves' treachery of not handing over the White Gems. In a nutshell, no he didn't plan anything. Just a matter of coincidence, really just movie-maker (lazy?) shorthand for setting up the T&T scene.
That is an interesting theory, although Thranduil doesn't come over as a grabby, greedy, wanting the white gems back asap- kind of Elf to me. Do you think he would rally up his army just to put terror and fright into the hearts of the Stubborn Little Folk? That would be silly, everyone knows when Thranduil gets angry, he doesn't need an army to do the fighting for him . Just one look upon the fair but upset and ridiculously gorgeous being would be enough cause for even the bravest of warrior to drop down their sword and run away as fast as their (short) legs can carry them. Thranduil is just fearsome like that But lol re you stating the aftermath would be messy. Indeed it would, terrible cleanup. I don't think he really intended on being at Erebor at the moment of attack either. That would mean he had some sort of precognition that Smaug would attack Erebor, otherwise it would be quite a coincidence for him arriving at the exact moment Smaug does. I think the film makes messed up the timeline a bit. But still, wouldn't he wear SOME form of armour when travelling behind the safe borders of his Kingdom? Oops! I need to back peddle and restate my original spiel better, and you're right ref "Thranduil doesn't come over as a grabby, greedy, wanting the white gems back asap- kind of Elf". Very good point. So my retooled spiel... here goes: First, I believe we need to keep in mind Thranduil's philosophy mindset about treasure-lust: "Long will I tarry ere I begin this war for gold." I think the movie-makers are keeping true to this as well. And that's why he turned and left when the feckless Dwarves shut the treasure box on him. Given his badass fighting abilities he could have just made a grab for it if he was treasure-sick, nevermind the resulting problems. But nope, he displayed grace and remarkable self-restraint in turning around and leaving. That tells me, he has the big picture in mind, is not trigger-happy, and definitely considers stuff and consequence before doing anything. Hallmarks of a great and wise leader So with this, I do have a problem with how he shows up overlooking Erebor with that heavily armed and excessively large escort. But the key is in his own attire. He's just not togged out for aggression there. So is that entourage the usual when the Elvenking travels outside the realm? I just think it's a bit too militarily ostentatious for a state visit, especially to Erebor, given the long-standing sensitivities between the two races. And yes, even if he did toy with the idea of military aggression, I think the aftermath would just put him off any such notion quite quickly, just based on his own experience in the LA. Plus bloodshed just for some gems? Surely, he would not risk his people for so petty a cause. Even if he did, could he live it down and still be able to command and rule? All these just points to nah, Thranduil was just out for a neighbourly visit. So that's why I'm thinking if the extra large armed escort was deliberate, it was probably a show of force to persuade Thror to hand 'em over. But... going back again to "Long will I tarry ere I begin this war for gold", this just seems too out of character (ooc). Could he have known Smaug was going to be there and decided he might want to check out the ring-side seats? Nope, I don't think so. Unless they have an accord like that hotline between the US and USSR during the Cold War years, I don't think Smaug would bother to give Thranduil a headsup, nor would Thranduil care to establish relations with any flying lizard So, I still cannot understand the heavily armed and excessively large escort with Thranduil himself in state visit garb, except as a shorthand from the movie-makers to the general audience that Thranduil has the might to help but doesn't, which to me is lazy story-telling. Bottomline: Thranduil simply showed up for a neighbourly call at the wrongest time possible, and decided wisely not to risk his people in a foregone conclusion. Makes sense?

And just for fun, let's put Thranduil and Legolas next to each other *sigh* You know, we talked about this in one of the older threads, but Leggy prolly got his mummy's ears.
Yes it's the best representation of Oropher (if someone could PS silve---ehh golden hair on him, and lose the braids) I have seen so far. Looks a lot like Thranduil en profil. Oh yeah! Just 'shop LP as Oropher and we got the perfect double serving of Pretty!

They were pretty good arguments, IMO, but I saw blonde Leggy in the movies before I read the books so...blonde he is! Those book arguments were prolly based on the Silmmie eh? I'd say it's not just skip-generation though. Cos if Leggy is a skip, what maketh you of Thranduil?
Of course, even with Legolas being blonde, that doesn't mean that Oropher couldn't have had dark hair since hair color can skip generations. If Oropher had any blonde ancestors, then any one of his descendents, even two or three generations later would still have a chance of being blonde even if their parents had dark hair. And, if both Thranduil and his wife were blonde that would make it even more likely that Leggy would end up blonde despite Oropher having dark hair... Yup, genetics apply. I guess part of the key is who are Granny and Mummy? hmm... though with Elves pouring themselves into the giving of life and Mummy literally nurturing baby in-vitro... wonder how much influence do parents have over both physical and psychological aspects of the baby. Could dark-haired elves who have no history of golden-hair in their genealogies will blond onto an elfling? Definitely missing you around these parts. Hope schoolwork lets up soon.

but since I'm not a Thranduil Thrall, or LP thrall, then I won't have to worry about needing to be close enough to kiss lol Adjust makeup or headdress as a film crew member, however- that's another story! However, I am quite annoyed that we have not acquired an A frame ladder yet in our house....goodness knows I could use it! Even reaching for my water bath canner off the top of my upper kitchen cabinets (it's too big to fit inside, but it's all good because it looks great- the giant aluminum and enamel pots really make it look like a kitchen and my friend commented that's how a kitchen should look- she watches home design shows so that was a great compliment for me ) means that I'm on tiptoe ON the chair! At least they're light (when they're not full of water, of course!) An A frame would probably suit the scenario a bit better though- extension ladders (from experience- I have a gouge line down the center of my pantry door as proof of this, and also nearly fell over on an extension ladder this July picking cherries thirty feet above the ground when the supporting vertical branch broke- that was scary and I barely got down in one piece) don't work very well without a stable surface to hook onto. And, thrall or no, I doubt LP would appreciate being the ladder support.....plus it might wreck the shot lol... Maybe some of those three step step stools that kids use to reach the bathroom sink?

Too unstable, IMO. My then toddler tried climbing up on one of those folding tv stands once- something that appears stable once unfolded- it collapsed right underneath her. Thankfully she only ended up with a "bonked head owie" and a couple bruises, but it was a bit of a scare. At least I know how to check pupil dilation for head injury.... I'd take a stool over a box- just not a collapsing one

Hallmarks of a great and wise leader Yes I know you're right here. And even if he wanted to cut up the Dwarves into little pieces for denying him the gems, he would have had to burrow one of his guard's sword. Seeing as he doesn't appear to be carrying one. Not that he couldn't easily do so, but to me that's just another sign he did not intend a visit with any hostile intentions. I never thought about Thranduil probably not having any trouble at all getting the gems by force at that very moment if he had wished so. But he didn't, he just gave his ultimate Death-stare and left, how very Kingly of him

Good compare pics! There was a nice article I read about Tolkien never actually saying Elves got pointy ears, but I think they rock the look so why not? Legolas' ears are definitely as unpointy as an Elf go without being mistaken for a Man's. But his daddy's got bona fide Elf ears for sure

I just saw that and was gonna post it. And I remember your post about the details in the Cloaks & Dagger artbook on this as well. Thranduil must have been cultivating orchids for years. And I can just see him being the rock-star at some great floral or orchid show and sweeping the top ribbon every round. Also, as I am absolutely loving Kerewyn's concept of Thranduil's prize orchid being named "Star of Lasgalen" (as she mentioned in her excellent appendix to tw 3 "An Unexpected Flashback"), and since I've seen a few orchid really up close (and killed some as well*cough*), I thought to share a few possible candidates for how the precious blooms might look: Whatever the aesthetic, I believe Thranduil's prize bloom will feature spectacular characteristically large single flowers rather than the more typical multi-blooms on a stem =)
Fan of both books and movies; I am a lurker by nature though it seems I have severely misnamed myself... for the moment.
