how did gandalf get his staff back after orthanc? Can't Post

not the new, white one he got from galadriel... the one he eventually lost in moria.

cheers --
.

aka. fili orc-enshield
+++++++++++++++++++
the scene, as i understand it, is exceptionally well-written. fili (in sort of a callback to the scene with the eagles), calls out "thorRIIIIIIN!!!" just as he sees the pale orc veer in for the kill. he picks up the severed arm of an orc which is lying on the ground, swings it up in desperation, effectively blocking the pale orc's blow. and thus, forever after, fili is known as "fili orc-enshield."

this earns him deep respect from his hard-to-please uncle. as well as a hug. kili wipes his boots on the pale orc's glory box. -- maciliel telpemairo

It's a different staff. [In reply to] Can't Post

If you have a look at the top of the two staffs you'll see they're a different design.

Now where he got that second staff is another matter. Did he come across a large fallen branch and whistle up a whittling spell? Does he have spares stashed at Rivendell? Did Eru chuck a new one down from on high and call out, "Heads up"?

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

Maybe [In reply to] Can't Post

He used a summoning charm a la Harry Potter: " Accio staff". Okay, I'm basically kidding, but why couldn't Gandalf do something along those lines?

But I trust Ataahua about it being a different staff. I only noticed it when he puts the crystal in it to use as a light, and figured the difference in appearance was due to that.

I'm assuming after Dol Guldur.... [In reply to] Can't Post

.... He developed a 'Spare Staff' policy. He probably had Elrond hold on to the second one, just in case.

Well... [In reply to] Can't Post

Find a stick, soak in water to soften the bark, strip, sand, and shape the stick, then work a vegetable-based oil into the wood for the finish. (Petroleum-based oils will interfere with the magical flow.)

Voilà! A staff!

(Doubtless not the only time he's had to make replacement over 300 lives of men. Wood don't last forever, you know. That's why I'm having to replace a section of my eaves.)

The staves of the Istari seem to be invested with some of their power. Also, I'm not sure that just any hardwood would suffice.

Indeed! [In reply to] Can't Post

Magic staves do require some sort of ceremony and/or consecration to purify the item and remove any negative energies, especially if it is to be used to interact with the Divine. Usually this does not take longer than an hour or two, and may be done "solitaire".

And yes, sometimes a specific type of wood is chosen based upon its magical properties. For example, a staff connected to power and strength would require oak. A staff connected magical workings and prophecy would require ash. But there's no hard and fast rule that a user *must* use a certain type of wood. Many people make a staff out of the stick that "feels right" to them. Also, in some magical systems, it is believed that a tree limb felled by a storm is imbued with a great deal of magical power. Such was the case with the stick Wonderboy in The Natural (1984), though that was in fact a bat.

But in any case, it's agreed that the stick must have already fallen from a tree. It must never be cut from a living tree.

I'm sure Gandalf already knows all this and more especially since his name means "staff-elf".

Yes and no [In reply to] Can't Post

Old Norse:

gandr = "wand, staff, cane", sometimes "magic" is implied.

álfr = "elf"

Curiously, in his 1936 translation of The Poetic Edda, Henry Adams Bellows translates "Gandalf" as "magic elf".
