What was the real reason that Gandalf lost the vote to head the White Council?
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak. But nonetheless, I offer a feebler explanation: Celeborn, after reading Oakentoons 15 and 45, changed his vote--and Gandalf lost by one.

“Tollers,” Lewis said to Tolkien, “there is too little of what we really like in stories. I am afraid we shall have to try and write some ourselves.”

...that Gandalf attended parties in the Shire where everyone would masticate excessively, engage in open social intercourse, and watch thespians perform on stage. The Wise were scandalized!!

Because Gandalf didn't vote for himself, he actually knew it would be too much work. And he needed more vacation time. So when he lost he pretended to be sad but he actually booked himself a trip and went to the beach. "Now come the days of the sand, may they be bliss."
I MET ORLANDO!!! And Sir Ian Mckellen, Andy Serkis, Lee Pace and Peter Jackson!!! Elves taught trees!!!
