Are we ready for the new doctor? Can't Post

I've liked Peter Capaldi ever since he played the callow Danny Olsen on Local Hero. I'm on board!

Check out this article in TV Guide, and then click the "7 Things to Know" link at the bottom for more.

Where now the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing?
Where is the helm and the hauberk, and the bright hair flowing?
Where is the hand on the harpstring, and the red fire glowing?
Where is the spring and the harvest and the tall corn growing?
They have passed like rain on the mountain, like a wind in the meadow;
The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow....

I dislike every new Doctor, until [In reply to] Can't Post

I suddenly like him one day.

Hard to top ten, but eleven grew on me, and I'm sure thirteen (or twelve, or whatever they decide to call him) will, too. Eventually.

Yes, my Saturday night is planned, for sure.

Agree! [In reply to] Can't Post

Each regeneration I'm not thrilled with the new Doctor.
Then a few episodes in I realize that I love him and believe they could not have made a better
choice for the new Doctor.
Not sure when it occurs but it has always happened.
So while I'm apprehensive over Peter I just know that in time he will be the Doctor.

It's a moot point for me since I don't have BBC America :( [In reply to] Can't Post

But I'm still looking forward to reading what others think. I saw this article that is basically a primer for the uninitiated, but the writer, who has seen the new episode, gives some hints about the personality of the new Doctor without giving too much away. But if you are spoiler averse, you might not want to read this.

I'm going to give it a shot [In reply to] Can't Post

I never really liked the last doctor, so kind of petered out after his first season. I'll try this one and see if I like him better, but I don't think anyone will ever top David Tennant as my favorite Doctor.

That hasn't really been my experience. [In reply to] Can't Post

My first Doctor was Tom Baker. I liked Peter Davison immediately, but I hated Colin Davis, and that never changed. I couldn't even give Sylvester McCoy a chance. (I never questioned the earlier Doctors, even though they came after Tom Baker for me, and I still think they stand up very well.) I loved Christopher Eccleston from the start, but disliked David Tennant all the way through, and I liked (not loved) Matt Smith all the way through. Interestingly, I found myself watching some of the "new" series more for the companions than for the Doctor. Martha, Amy, and Rory were brilliant. I've never been sold on Clara, but I'm very hopeful about Capaldi's Doctor, because he's such an accomplished actor and knows and loves the show.

Nice to know. [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm afraid I can never be a regular here again, because it's too addictive -- I'm kind of "all or nothing," and there are too many other things I want to spend time on in my remaining years on this planet. But it's somehow reassuring to know that TORn is still here, whether I drop in or not, that my username is still mine, and that there are even people I "know" still around. I was watching the Doctor Who "world tour" show tonight, and anticipating the season premiere tomorrow, and wanting to share some thoughts on it, and it just popped into my head that of course there would be some Whovians here!

another vote for ten [In reply to] Can't Post

although I admit it took me a few episodes to warm to him after nine.

Never did really take to eleven. But I'll give Capaldi a chance. I too have liked him since "Local Hero."

I have high hopes for Capaldi. He's a good actor and obviously a big fan of the show, so he 'gets' it. It'll probably take a couple of episodes to get used to him, because it has always done for me no matter how much I've ended up loving the current, but I can't imagine not liking him. Whether he'll be able to live up to Matt Smith (who is my favourite Doctor) remains to be seen.

Doctors are like my kids [In reply to] Can't Post

I love them each for who they are. Ten had that manic energy and drive to do things and fix things. Eleven had an amazing imagination and two hearts to go with it. I didn't see much of Nine but he struck me as damaged, like I needed to take care of him and make him soup and bread and cookies. Tom Baker was my original doctor and they say you never replace your first doctor. In a way, that is true. The doctors since have been "versions" of the real doctor for me. But like I said, I've loved them all for different reasons.

What I'm looking forward to with this doctor is to watch Peter Carpaldi, who is himself a writer/director/amazingly creative person, put his own stamp on the character. He has the chops to be able to take an even greater part in the molding of the character along with the creative team and I think that is needed.

nicely put [In reply to] Can't Post

I too started with Tom Baker and in a way have judged all other doctors by their "Four"-ness - that particular brand of manic genius - and to me Ten came closest to him. I wonder if, perhaps, Capaldi's Doctor might revert to even earlier Doctors?

I am! [In reply to] Can't Post

I've only watched the new series and have loved all the Doctors (though I think I'll always like 10 best Wink). I admit I was a bit uncertain when I saw they were going with someone older and in a different direction with the show, but the more I've thought about it the more I'm anticipating it! In a sense, to me Tennant and Smith were very similar characters, so I'm really excited to see something new and unpredictable. And I heard it's going to be darker which I'm looking forward to --I loved 11, but sometimes he was just too consistently...um, goofy?..to me, so I think this will be an interesting change. Smile

I believe it's almost time here on the east coast! Allons-y! Cool

I expect so, [In reply to] Can't Post

but I see a lot of "four" ness so far. For me, 10 was just *too* manic -- I never saw the paradoxically greater and purer humanity than humans were capable of that Tom Baker brought to the role. (Of course, he was pretty much playing himself, unlike any other Doctor.) I thought Christopher Eccleston came very close to the right blend, but we hardly got to know him.

More after the premiere ends, but so far, so fabulous!

Before the new show began, I called my g'daughter to see how she was holding up with the anticipation... and she was nearly insane with it ;)

I love the new doctor! [In reply to] Can't Post

The writing was not up to what I think Moffat did with Blink and I kept feeling the whoosh of air as the anvils fell, but all-in-all I think they introduced him well. Peter Capaldi was amazing, even working in a few of Matt Smith's mannerisms early on as he got used to his "new body." I like that the doctor is getting a bit darker. Even the set design pointed to an eccentric professor wrestling with serious questions. This is going to be really good!
