*Throws Open Door* It's Fiesta Friday!!!! Can't Post

Greetings Fellow TORnlings!

I'll be tossing the drinks and chatter at you today while our fabulous Altaira tackles yet another day in the "real world" ;) While Bilbo deals with the Spiders in Mirkwood and the last of the Fellowship meet with Treebeard as they go their separate ways, we must soon bid farewell to the "official" Summer here in my neck of the woods. *sigh* It's gone way too fast!

On the flip side, some of our Sibs are eagerly awaiting Spring!!! Hang in there… it's coming!!! :D

So… what would you like as refreshment on this fine day? Pray... tell us what you did with your Summer (or Winter) and what your plans are for the coming days.

Hey, gramma! :) [In reply to] Can't Post

Heh, well, it's not like the weather/temperatures ever stick to the 'official' dates anyway (at least around here, at any rate)-- especially this year! :P :D Although, with that ridiculous winter we had (which lasted through what spring should've been), in compensation we've had an awesome summer (not too hot/humid at all-- more like spring/fall, which is my favorite time/weather of the year anyway). :)

That said, I'll have a Summer Usual, please; thanks, and I hope you have a great weekend, gramma! :)

Here in Michigan, they say it's the same arctic vortex that blasted us the winter/spring that is keeping us cooler this summer... but I love it! I'm all about these very mild temps :)

Last summer was WAY too hot!

Hi, Gramma! [In reply to] Can't Post

Had so much fun last weekend camping -- we (my daughter, g'son, sister, brother, niece and family, along with some other friends- and the dog!) went to a remote lake (no wi-fi, cell service, no amenities at all) where we all had a great time. The weather was superb, the lake was warm, we had water toys galore, the kids all had a blast. I even went kayaking for the first time and loved it. We spent most of the day in the lake, but had time for reading, and someone was always up for a game of some sort. The kids caught crayfish (which we ate) and biked, kayaked, swam, and slept like rocks! We took the g'son's dog for the first time, and she was so good and had a lot of fun herself. I came home feeling rejuvenated and more alive than in a long time. We're planning to go again next summer, maybe for longer.

I'll just have a quick coffee to go, please Gramma, and Happy Weekend, everyone!

Howdy Gramma [In reply to] Can't Post

Made it into Fiesta on time since a long while. Great to see you here!

Had a lovely summer. Had a leave from work for 4 weeks. The first half I spend just at home. But we had amazing weather. Nice and warm, sometimes rain, so I didn't need to water the garden.
And the last week off to the UK. First Saturday going to see Richard Armitage in The Crucible. Amazing work by the entire cast. And my friend and I went to the stage exit late at night and got a picture with Richard and an autograph.
During the week I went on my own to the Lake District. Such wonderful scenery. Lakes and mountains, wonderful! I even went to the home of Beatrix Potter, so much fun to see how she pictured her own world into the books. They had the books laying open with the picture of the table or cabinet that was there.
And the next Saturday again to London. But this time for Richard III with Martin Freeman. Only, Martin was unwell, so the understudy took over his part. He did it great and the play was very interesting. But for us unfortunately, not Martin.

And this week back to work. The students will come next week. This week we had an introduction for the new teachers. Showing them around and explaining them how we work.

But now, weekend!! No special plans, just a bit of cleaning and maybe even a bit of cross stitch.

Could I have a Frappachino. I'll be at the bar, seeing who else is coming.

Have a great weekend all!

Gatorade [In reply to] Can't Post

Working the Hotter N' Heck Hundred bicycle race this weekend with Wifey, so I need to keep hydrated.

Been putting siding on the house. (Getting to old to paint.) Haven't kilt myself yet, though I did somehow disconnect the internet.

Wichita Falls has been drinking poo water for over a month now and everybody thinks the water tastes even better than before. (It is more free of contaminants. Local industry water use has dropped an average of 25% since they can keep cycling their cooling water and such longer before recharging it.)

Took my idiot brother-in-law's kids swimming Wednesday. Poor neglected kids acted like they'd gone to Disneyland. I'd say some people shouldn't be allowed to have kids, but these cute little apples fell really really far from the rotten tree. Smart as heck, but ignorant as all get-out since they're "home schooled". (Quotation marks are deliberate.) Well mannered, too. We take them out for pizza and they wait to be offered a second slice. You can tell they're barely able to keep from wolfing it down in one gulp. Must be starving. We'd turn them in to child services, but we know they'd only get sent back (happened several times before) and then we wouldn't be allowed to take them out anymore. What can you do?

You're right. There should be a law... but so many of those kids are like taking in a stray cat or dog. They know when they've been rescued and really appreciate it. The simple things are a joy to them!

Ah...mind if I stop in? [In reply to] Can't Post

Well, I think this is the first Fiesta I've made it to. Are sombreros required? I'm wearing mine, just in case....Tongue

I've had a pretty busy week. My retail job called me in at the last minute on Wednesday because four people called out sick. I can't blame them though... Two are due for root canals, one for knee-replacement, and the last has debilitating migraines. Ouch! Well it all turned out to be an interesting day, and I was temporarily promoted to a manager! Yup, store keys, name tag-- the whole package! It only lasted for 40 minutes though... far too short, but I got the distinct feeling some customers did not like being told 'No' by a kid who looks like a high-schooler.Crazy

In other news, I started some Aikido classes a few weeks ago, and I have just managed to stop jostling the weapons rack on my way in and out. Something about unstable swords and staves makes people uncomfortable! Laugh I'm sore right about now, but it's been a great experience.

I have a rare weekend off this week, and so I'm currently planning my break that includes yard-work, reading, and a re-watch of the Hobbit movies.

Hope everyone has a good end of the week!!

I'm too used to it being in the evening. Well it's been a good week at the conference at San Diego - seen lots and have had fun.

The sunsets are certainly spectacular.

But I am glad to be flying home this afternoon. We've had shocking news of a dear friend has cancer, and at one point we thought my other half was going to have to be induced labour. It's about to get even more stressful from now.

It's the most... wonderful time.... of the year! [In reply to] Can't Post

Kids go back to school Monday. This past week was Freshman High School orientation, elementary school ice cream social, 6th grade orientation (for my 5th grader who will be at the middle school for her math class and wanted to look at the school). Older daughters are working now so instead of 5 kids in 5 schools (last year) I have 3 kids in 2 schools (kinda).

Artist/book store daughter already has a promotion. She graduated in May with a degree in Illustration and is now Production Designer for a rare bookstore. She will be responsible for producing quarterly catalogs that will be distributed to collectors and libraries with rare book collections as well as producing all the content for the website. She even gets to design the cover! This past week was spent producing a mini catalog for a very loyal collector who uses their store almost exclusively. His name is well-known in Baltimore and he's got lots of money to spent on his hobby so they take good care of him. He'll be donating his collection to his college library when he dies so it's kind of exciting to think of her being part of that.

Baker daughter is looking for a new job. She's learned all she can from this one so it's time to move on which I was surprised to learn is expected in that field. It's not easy for her. She doesn't like change but she's doing it and for that I am very proud of her.

Older son is starting his last push towards his Boy Scout Eagle. He's decided that he wants to go for it so we spent the last day laying out a plan to get it all done... along with college applications... and Senior Year activities... and Drama Club... and running his patrol for the troop... yeah... it's doable... ? Crazy But I'm proud that he's going to finish it. That's a major step for him as he is not the kind of kid to do it half-arsed. If he does it, it's going to be more than checking the boxes.

Everyone will be home this weekend including out-of-town daughter so we'll have something good for dinner. Not sure what yet.

But for now, I think I'd like a nice iced green tea. I'll toast Richard and wish him a happy birthday while I watch North and South and fold laundry. Cool

*Sigh* Sadly I know of a few kids like that.. [In reply to] Can't Post

Nothing against home-education, (I was, after all) but it is definitely not for everyone. I don't usually advocate for government involvement much, but I do think it is necessary in some cases. It's just so hard to draw that line, though, when it comes to interference within a family. In any cases, it is always best to have people (Like you) who truly care, be involved. Sometimes all you can do is be there for when they really need you.

My own sister's kids are a bit sheltered, I think. Nothing 'bad' going on there, but she's a germaphobe and whenever we take them out, they are deathly afraid of getting wet, sandy, dirty, or sick. So much so, that it detracts from the whole experience and purpose of broadening their horizons. They won't go near a pool, let alone the ocean, zoo, or camping. They almost never play with other kids, and if the other children sneeze, cough, or look sick, they leave the park, playground or what-have-you. We try to work on that whenever they visit, and the first day they were here, we play outside and made mud pies in the sandbox. Taking the boys fishing was an experience... They wanted to catch the fish, but once it got hooked, they wanted to throw to pole into the lake!! Alas, there is only so much we can do, so we do our best and wait.... Oh, and we're going to catch bugs next time they visit...

Howdy, gramma! Dealing with uncertain/shifting travel plans at the moment, which is never fun in the moment. After that, good things to come (I hope!).

Taking a hiatus from being online for a few days after things get rolling on this. I'm excited for it, as being 'unplugged' for awhile is such a refreshing experience. I'm hoping to do a lot of reading and writing with that spare time, alongside the traveling. I'm hoping for some better weather than what we've had here the past few days. Yup, up a (woobly) ladder working on the white trim of ye old house, again (many agains) gramma. I still will not have vinyl Tongue.

Yes it is chilly today, and cloudy but i got work done. Tomorrow some more, not to mention a big hole torn out due to some rot that i am fixing as well. A 135 yr old house needs constant help. I hope everyone is fine and out 'n about.

I have today some shots to show.

Hear is one aspect of our new designed home, and here is another from the opposite direction which shows the official front door although it is not typical, i will say.

Here is a shot of the lake the developer made with 2! dams. It is 10acres and really pristine due to a liner put in before filling. It is really clear and clean. The new massive timbered and huge stone fireplace pavilion is going up there across the lake. We were sitting on one of the pairs of chairs looking across the way at it. Here is my better half doing so.

Finally decided on a woodstove too for the house having changed my mind several times already. It is the Manchester made by Hearthstone. The enameled brown is Gorgacious. Here it is. It takes 24" logs and has a front door without too much ornate stuff across the window. A choice can be made as to which side i desire to have a 2ndary loading door. It will draw outside air through a 3" intake.

Have a good weekend everyone:).

" 'Fair lady Goldberry!' said Frodo at last, feeling his heart move with a joy that he did not understand. He stood as he had at times stood enchanted by fair elven-voices; but the spell that was now laid upon him was different: less keen and lofty was the delight, but deeper and nearer to mortal heart; marvellous and yet not strange."

Chapter VII: In the House of Tom Bombadil; FOTR's

Faerie contains many things besides elves and fays and besides dwarfs, witches, trolls, giants or dragons; it holds the seas, the sun, the moon, the sky; and the earth, and all things that are one in it: tree and bird, water and stone, wine and bread, and ourselves, mortal men, when we are enchanted."

Laugh!

Oh wow oh wow, the "pics" of the house! Looks like you can have dinner on the deck even if it's raining! I like that extra spur of the deck. Lots of glass, too!

Woodstoves are perfect for that. In winter you can keep a kettle of water boiling, to get steam into the air so it's not so dry; and it's perfect for a kettle of soup to slowly simmer.

This gets more and more exciting! Smile

Darn work getting in the way again. Crazy

This week was the last of the summer concert series, which is a bummer for me as I love the concerts/picnics in the park. Still plan to be out and about as much as possible for the rest of the summer, with potentially a few more festivals here and there.

Had a peach Bellini with dinner tonight, so that should kick the weekend off right. Happy weekend all!
