Will Bard have any armor other than the chail mail shirt (in the scanned

other than the remaining town guard. He may have had the mail shirt in his trunk at home....a relic passed down.

But in all seriousness, as an archer (and a particularly nimble one at that) he really shouldn't bother weighing himself down in heavy plate. The mail hauberk lining his coat will give him a great deal of protection against most attacks. Then again, he should wear something bright and distinctive in order to make himself recognizable to his men on the battlefield. He is adopting the role of commander, after all.

Agree, not heavy plate, but more protection than a wool coat with

a very loose ring mail shirt. Maybe heavy leather with armor in select protection areas etc. Look at the elves...archers with protective layers.

Unless boiled and layered thickly, leather offers little in the way of protection. And don't get me started on how cumbersome and restricting a suit of boiled leather is. A mail hauberk might be heavy, but at least it's flexible. If he's got a good amount of quilted wool padding beneath the mail then he should be all set. Adding boiled leather over all this would just reduce range of motion. What he really should have is some proper arm protection as the elves have. This is where a few nice iron lames bound in leather would help. To add to all this, he really should be wearing some form of head protection, but of course this the film industry so we can't go covering up the actor's face (though as someone pointed out recently the Rohirrim pull this off well).

and added a modicum of protection against cutting strokes...add some metal reinforcements etc. My point is not to say he needs to be protected like a front line spearman but to have better fighting gear than his cumbersome wool coat. At least a tighter ring chain mail shirt would be an improvement. My guess is that Laketown had limited choice, especially after Smaug burns it down. "...Mongol armour drew its influence from Chinese and Middle East styles. Most Mongolian armour was of scale and lamellar variety. Most armour was made of hardened leather and iron, lanced together onto a fabric backing, sometimes silk....Mongol archers demanded the armour to be light enough so that when riding, it didn't interfere with their mobility " http://www.mongolian-yurt.com/resources/P_Armor.gif
