I think i would have been interested to see Sean Connery as Gandalf hes got a great face for it imo.

As we exercise the right to advocate our views, and as we animate our supporters, we must all assume responsibility for our words and actions before they enter a vast echo chamber and reach those both serious and delirious, connected and unhinged.

As much as I enjoy Sean Connery in certain roles, I don't think I would have been able to take him seriously as Gandalf.

...Period. But, if anyone could hold even a small candle... it's not Connery. John Hurt could've made a good Gandalf.

Cate Blanchett, Christopher Lee, Ian Holm, and Ian McKellen. They *are* Galadriel, Saruman, Bilbo and Gandalf. They all fit the bill perfectly, in my opinion. Sure, Kate Winslet, Peter O'Toole, David Tennant and Michael Gambon might have given it a good go, but they just wouldn't be perfect. Honorable mentions also go to Andy Serkis, Elijah Wood, Bernard Hill, Miranda Otto and Ken Stott. I'd find it hard to think of other actors for their characters.

Agreed. They are the characters to me because I saw the movies first so I always saw them in my head even when I read.

My top choices for best actors would be Viggo, Sean Bean, Sean Astin, Miranda Otto, Cate Blanchett, Ian Mckellan, Christopher Lee, and Elijah Wood. Only Arwen and Faramir could I really see replaced.

yesterday / earlier in the morning i was wanting to post a thread along the lines of "cast lotr -- if +none+ of the original actors were available." independently, i was also thinking that the ensemble cast would have certainly been enhanced with the addition of ciaran hinds. a +phenomenal+ actor, with great range. he's been in everything from peter brook's "mahabarata," to playing a real baddy opposite cate blanchett in "veronica guerin." he was an incredibly moving, incredibly layered cesar in hbo's "rome." he might be best known to general audiences as aberforth dumbledore from the harry potter films. i would not trade bernard hill's theoden for anything (it's one of my favorite performances of the entire series), but if i were forced to cast someone else in his place, hinds would make a theoden of incredible force, depth, and majesty. cheers --- .
aka. fili orc-enshield +++++++++++++++++++ the scene, as i understand it, is exceptionally well-written. fili (in sort of a callback to the scene with the eagles), calls out "thorRIIIIIIN!!!" just as he sees the pale orc veer in for the kill. he picks up the severed arm of an orc which is lying on the ground, swings it up in desperation, effectively blocking the pale orc's blow. and thus, forever after, fili is known as "fili orc-enshield." this earns him deep respect from his hard-to-please uncle. as well as a hug. kili wipes his boots on the pale orc's glory box. -- maciliel telpemairo

Sean Connery Gandalf would be blluuhhh!!! As far as casting improvements go, PJ should have pushed harder for Daniel Day Lewis' services as Aragorn, as well as adding Jim Caveziel (unsure of surname spelling) as Faramir, and Clive Owen as Boromir.

Liv Tyler did a lovely job as Arwen, but the elves of PJ's adaptation have longer faces than I imagined. The Arwen in my mind is more like Scarlett Chorvat
Or Erin Spencer
Another might be Kate Beckinsale (left), circa 1999
Or Bridget Moynahan, also circa 1999

I thought all of the the casting for LOTR was spot on except for perhaps Eowyn. I would have cast someone a little more sturdier, athletic looking. She just looks so petit and fragile from what I imagined-a warrior. That being said, I still though she was very good. That shot of her after her encounter with wormtongue as she goes outside saves it for me. Best emotional close up of the trilogy for me an only a great actor could have done it. I'll reserve judgement on TH casting until its all said and done.

I think in both LOTR and the Hobbit films the script has been specifically written around certain actors that it becomes very hard to simply "recast" when in reality you'd also likely be rewriting significantly aswell. I could say for example that I imagined someone like Jeremy Irons or Charles Dance as Denethor but that would be more a desire for the character to be expanded and have more dignity as on the page, John Noble did an excellent job in the less complex and smaller role that was called for in the script. You ask Dance or Irons to work the exact same script and I suspect they might come off as rather characterless, to do there best work they need for time and focus than Denethor was given.

McKellen's features are round. Gandalf's are pointy. Eastwood's are pointy. That's my point. Saurman is tall, icky, and menacing. Donald Sutherland is 6'4" and can be pretty icky and menacing. Still, it's not like any of the characters in the films matched the books, so sticking with McKellen and Lee is okay by me.

as Aragorn, the part he auditioned for in the first place. But after a rough start, Viggo won me over. I can't see anyone else as Frodo, Gandalf, Bilbo, Galadriel, or Elrond. I'd entertain alternatives for Arwen (who to me is not classically beautiful enough) and Eowyn (who does not look athletic enough), though I don't have any suggestions myself.
