Best "war veteran switches side to the natives" movie? Can't Post

Come to think about it, I have a vague memory that I did this exact poll a few years ago but what the heck! Oh and I pick The Last Samurai. I like DWW also. Not a big fan of Avatar.

I think you're going to have to relocate your footer image or take the code out of your footer.

Or just keep displaying that broken image icon forever. :-)

I voted DwW. [In reply to] Can't Post

IMO, Last Samurai was predictable and obvious, although it was beautifully filmed. Never saw Avatar. The trailers made it look predictable and obvious too; maybe some day I'll watch it and see if it really is.

I've been calling Avatar "Dances with Wolves with Blue Indians" ever since I saw it. Finally, someone else who noticed! Thank you!

only a million other people have made that observation... [In reply to] Can't Post

which, for me, got a little old after awhile.

It was like there were three negative things one could say about Avatar and just about anyone who wanted to say something negative picked from that pool.

I have read over a dozen Cinderella variants. Sherlock lives in Victorian England, in modern London, in NYC, and as a cartoon character.

There are basic, universal stories that are told over and over again. I would judge a story on how well it's told and what I take from it.

I, personally, loved Avatar. It might be the 'same' story as Dances with Wolves but it's told in a different way and focuses on different issues and makes different points.

I will go to my grave proud to love Avatar!

for what it's worth, I also liked DwW but I would never rewatch it. It doesn't interest me that much. But this scene:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LR4j8iWu-OI
is fantastic and makes me cry every time.

And, as much as I enjoyed or loved any of the three options, I'd vote for Lawrence of Arabia over all of them.

Loved The Last Samurai [In reply to] Can't Post

The idea that a warrior is a warrior is a warrior is intriguing to me. Also it was our Ngila Dickson did the costume design -- brilliant -- and on the heals of LOTR no less.

There was quite a long time since I watched DWW... [In reply to] Can't Post

But I could have sworn that the last scene was a wolf howling in the night?

"It was like there were three negative things one could say about Avatar and just about anyone who wanted to say something negative picked from that pool."

IMHO, though, it is a legitimate complaint. The story is basically a carbon copy of DWW, TLS & other similar stories. Which would be fine, if Avatar didn't hype itself up as the "movie of the century" and so forth and garnered Oscar hype, which IMO it didn't deserve. The only Award I'd give to Avatar is the visual effects, the writing was in my opinion incredibly lazy. I'm hesitant to use the expression "rip-off" but I'm afraid that is what exactly what James Cameron did if you ask me.

I think I fixed it now [In reply to] Can't Post

I was hesitant to remove my footer, but that's what I had to do apparantly. I've had this footer for more than 4 years, didn't want to remove it, but I had to apparantly (since the link doesn't exist any longer for some reason)!

It just doesn't look the same without it and the picture is gone from my computer. Ah well!

I'll have to watch Lawrence again [In reply to] Can't Post

Remind me: did he switch sides? I definately have to rewatch it because I don't even remember that! (If he doesn't switch sides to the "natives" at some point, he doesn't qualify as a contender in this poll)

Good question [In reply to] Can't Post

Allenby: Do you think he's gone native, Harry?

Brighton: No. He would if he could, I think.

Later:

Feisal: Aurens, or is it Major Lawrence?

Finally:

Audar: I know your heart. (....) There is only the desert for you.

where he is putting the best interest of the Arabs as his highest priority, though.

I don't think he 'gives up' his British identity. I just think he identifies with the Arab sensibility more than was ever asked of him and more than any other soldier would have.

I think a lot of people noticed that when it came out. [In reply to] Can't Post

The Dances With Wolves comparison was all over the internet back then. Dances With Smurfs was a pretty common joke. FernGully was also a pretty common comparison.
