The Arkenstone (book/possible film spoilers) Can't Post

Just speculation, folks! Wink

In "DOS", Thorin says to Gandalf in Bree:

"The seven armies swore that oath to the one who wields the King's Jewel, the Arkenstone! It is the only thing that will unite them."

In the book, Bilbo gives the Arkenstone to Bard. This probably means that Bilbo's action is going to be more devastating for Thorin because the Dwarves may be obliged to follow orders from Bard rather than Thorin [if they keep this in the film]. Oaths are sacred in these types of stories - you break it and you break everything if you go against it.

What say you? Sly

..The Lord of Silver Fountains
.....The King of Carven Stone
..The King Under the Mountain
.......Shall come into his own

..And the bells will ring in gladness
......At the Mountain King's return
..But all shall fail in sadness
....And the lake will shine and burn

doubtful [In reply to] Can't Post

I think this is doubtful as a plot point. I would assume that the Arkenstone's oath only holds for when a dwarf of proper lineage holds it, not necessarily when a thief takes it and gives it to somebody else. If that were the case, the dwarven armies would have been beholden to Smaug.

If anything, it will only make Dain's (and his army's) wrath that much more intense, not to mention Thorin's anger at his betrayal by Bilbo AND the fact the Arkenstone is in the hands of his "enemies".

The movie version [In reply to] Can't Post

will probably have Thorin take it from Bilbo with force, full fight scene in minecarts. lol jks

but in all seriousness, I think when Thorin sights the Arkenstone and its not in his hands you'll see him flip his lid to get it.
