Galadriel wears her ring on her middle-finger as well. Originally they were going to put the One Ring on Sauron's middle-finger, but they moved it to the index finger (you can see this in the Appendices, during a storyboard version of the original prologue.) This leads me to believe that they considered having Frodo wear the ring on his middle-finger as well (but that's just speculation). To me this represents pride, and power, at least on Sauron's part. Or else for some reason they thought the ring just looked cool on the middle-finger (and I've got to admit it does if you don't think about what it could mean. Just watch that early version of the prologue and you'll see what I mean). But I highly doubt that at one point they intended for both Sauron and Galadriel's characters to make such a crass joke, especially in LOTR. With TH, I wouldn't have put it past PJ and Martin Freeman, but since the idea springs from LOTR, which stayed very "family friendly" as regards to anything inappropriate (foul language, nudity, etc.) I really think that the fact that Bilbo chooses to wear the ring on his middle-finger is simply a result of the filmmakers desiring to reuse an old idea.
"I've found it is the small things, everyday deeds of ordinary folk, that keeps the darkness at bay. Simple acts of kindness and love. Why Bilbo Baggins? Perhaps it is because I’m afraid, and he gives me courage.” - Gandalf the Grey. "Do not be afraid Mithrandir, if ever you should need my help, I will come." - Lady Galadriel.
