not sure if this line is in the book or not, but thorin says something like... "nothing has been seen or heard of smaug for 60 years, the wealth of our fathers remains unguarded, do you not think other eyes look to the mountain?"...... who's eyes? what would orcs/goblins want with large amounts of gold, elves or other dwarves?

I'm guessing men might be interested in the gold. Also, it's possible that dwarves and elves would be interested as well. Dwarves for their love of riches from the earth...and elves also cherish precious jewels. Thranduil does show much interest in certain white gems. He just doesn't dare to enter the mountain.

Not yet, at least. I am sure Thorin's fear is that they will all lose their fear of the dragon and go fur the treasure... they seem to see it as a very real possibility that Smaug is not alive anymore.

The attraction of the dragon's hoard...

...gold, treasure - everyone wants it. It's not necessarily about wanting it for anything, just about possessing it. This is what Tolkien says: The news of the death of the guardian has already gone far and wide, and the legend of the wealth of Thror has not lost in the telling during many years; many are eager for a share in the spoil. The orcs are also out for revenge on the dwarves and power in the north.

But how would the others have been able to enter the mountain?

Let them look to the mountain. I thought the main entrace was "sealed" and only the key and the map can help to find and open the secret door... so who cares who else looks torwards the mountain?

One could try to dig one's way into the Mountain. The risk would be awakening the dragon, if Smaug is still alive (and, of course, he is--at least up to his attack on Lake-town).

"Assessing. Wondering. Weighing the risk..." All those busy ME builders, stone masons, carpenters, ex-warriors - as time went on Erebor would have been a huge temptation for many as long as Smaug was quiet. Plenty of folks IMO that a "sealed" mountain wouldn't have stopped, with time and the right tools and enough workers.

That is one way that Sauron's servants might use to try to enter the Mountain in order to attempt negotiations with Smaug. I imagine that the Dark Lord would expect to accrue a few casualties along the way. And, as long as the sappers were careful, I doubt that anyone from Lake-town would even notice them. Of course, one of the Nazgul might be able to enter the Mountain unclad without need for a physical entrance. And in that state they might also be immune to any attack that Smaug could make against them (although they were somewhat vulnerable to fire as Black Riders; and dragon-fire is exceptionally hot!).
