So I posted these in the "Elves make the battles less epic..." thread and thought I'd share them here as well. (It's a comic-strip) A keepsake, for old times' sake

The Fall, and interrogatino thoughts + GIF appreciation
[In reply to]
|

|
Yes, and that reminds me – I clicked on a pic of yours recently that linked to an article about The Fall that utterly delighted me. I’ve been meaning to talk about that, will soon! – caught up in our current topics at the moment. Cool! Waiting for your review
I like this notion that he is also carefully watching Legolas and Tauriel. He is certainly quick to dismiss Tauriel when she has perhaps breached his method by threatening the orc with death. Love how in control Thranduil is, and the self-control of Elves re Tauriel's immediate pause mid-rush even though she seemed fully intent on giving orc-death. He doesn't even need to physically intervene.
It gives the impression that he is intending to keep the orc alive, which is why it’s all the more enjoyably unexpected when he ‘frees his wretched head from his miserable shoulders’ (I so love that line!) Certainly Legolas looks a bit stunned. Agreed! When even Legolas was surprised, it tells us things were not going to plan. I liked how rattled Thranduil seemed for those brief moments. And Legolas seemed not have really picked up on the personal impact to his dad, a testament to Thranduil's capability and tendency to keep things to himself.
We’re also looking at Tauriel when Thranduil says he does not care about one dead dwarf. That dwarf being her new friend of course, and following on from him telling her that ‘other lands are not my concern’, we receive a particularly steely-hearted view of Thranduil from this… and I can’t help wondering if she is having thoughts of rebellion or disillusion. This could be where her determination to head out and give aid is cemented. Yup, I see it in her demeanor too. Wonder what punishment Thranduil's going to dish out for such wilful insubordination when all's said and done.
When Legolas says ”There is no king under the mountain, nor will there ever be. None will enter Erebor while the dragon lives”… I wonder if he is talking with complete conviction, or whether it’s a denial tactic, aiming to keep the orc boastfully talking. It seems to be dismissive conviction on Legolas' part, especially if he was privy to the audience Thorin had with Thranduil. But Thranduil's interest was certainly piqued enough that he started his prowling again. (Love the sense of stillness LP gives Thranduil even when in motion)
S’funny, when I saw this scene in the film, I didn’t realise it took place in the throne room, even though the setting is quite clear, with the pillars and the steps. Possibly because we see it at a different angle to his scene with Thorin. But my perception was that this is taking place on a platform much lower in the palace, closer to either the dungeons, or the gates. It’s a perception I am still having trouble shaking. Yes it’s the throne room but it seems like somewhere else, to me. I was surprised too that it took place not in the dungeons or some other place more appropriate. I guess the residents of the Halls didn't need to be babied, and Thranduil subscribes to open-door policy much. Or it could just be that with the Dwarves' escape, concerns about the security of the dungeons might have forced the decision to conduct the interrogation elsewhere until they can identify and plug the breach. Though I pity the elves who have clean-up duty.
Re ‘Serpents of the north’ -- and the gifs of LP, OB and EL reacting to what they’re watching – how I would love to have seen LP’s reaction when he first ever saw the scars they CGI’d onto his face. That would be priceless! Hopefully there's a bonanza for Thralls on the EE. I'd like to see LP's reaction when he first saw himself in full Thranduil mode... and the on-set reaction when he first walked on.
Thranduil’s ‘state visit’ costume is truly a design that looks awesome from behind. The pattern and symmetry of his flash of white hair falling into that triangle that starts at those broad shoulders and falls to a point mid-back. And the crown above, and the colours. I find the aesthetics here very pleasing. Kerewyn, that is pure EI!
I love “Why do you linger in the shadows”, with Thranduil’s face as seen through Bilbo’s ring-bound eyes. Haven't seen this gif'd before. Yeah, this is precious! Was quite happy to find the GIF
Like in that large central image here, sometimes I catch a glimpse of the lower pointy tip of Thranduil’s crown, as it edges below his cheekbone, and it reminds me of the modern microphone head set that many dancers / singers / entertainers use these days (of which Madonna was an early adaptor) It just furthers that sense of rock star fabulosity. LoL I get that same vibe! And I like how it emphasized the pain when the right side quivered as Thranduil goes through his facemelt.
Side note: I have been trekking through The Walking Dead S2, under slight pressure as it’s been lent by a friend, and I like to counteract the violence and grotesqueness by following each viewing with an episode of Pushing Daisies. Last night I watched PD S2 Ep4 and counted at no less than four adorable head tilts. (it could be a drinking game!) This is a much nicer note to go to bed on. Sound strategy! Loved David Arquette in this too. His character and Ned had such common ground and yet are polar opposites with their circumstance/vocation. It was fun watching Ned delicately work his way around.

I really should start organising the Tolkien links and resources for my own sanity. Otherwise I'm like Bilbo turning Bag End upside down every other day. I think I'll start with that blog idea, and see how that goes.

Wow, that looks great! I'm only on chapter five ("Turin in Doriath") of The Children of Hurin, though, so I doubt I'll be finished in three days. But maybe, since the read-along goes all the way through November, I'll be able to catch up, or at least follow the old posts when I get to that point. That read-along trailer looked great too! I love how they combined footage from both the LOTR and TH movies. It really worked well! Although, *cough* I did notice, right around 3 minutes, 45 seconds that they slipped a little Tron: Legacy movie footage in too! Lol. Btw, I'm really enjoying The Children of Hurin! It's definitely more grim than LOTR and I know a lot of the characters won't get a happy ending, but it's still Tolkien's writing and it's great to see the world of Middle Earth expanded. There are also lots of elves mixed in with the grim people and elves always make me happy!

First, Leggy and Thrandy in the same pic makes my little heart very happy!
The Elves probably didn't take prisoners as a matter of course. By that, I mean the nature of the foes they faced in their day-to-day didn't necessitate the need usually. Spiders? Kill on sight. Orcs? Kill on sight. Wargs? Kill on sight. Anything disagreeable and not obviously a member of the Free Peoples? Kill on sight. *sorry, couldn't resist a little nod to Toothless and Hiccup* Lol! I always love a good How to Train Your Dragon reference!
Where Thranduil looked as he spoke, and essentially prowled around his prey, felt very naturalistic and organic to me. Yes, it felt that way to me too. I wonder, since a lot of the actors said they'd give a slightly different performances on each take of a certain scene, if a lot of how LP played this scene was done that way too, on a whim, hence the reason it feels natural instead forced or practiced. Of course, I'm sure he was told to walk from point A to point B by going *this* way since that's how we've got the cameras and lighting set up, but that still gives a lot of leeway for LP to play with *how* he walks from point A to point B.
You know, with his gunslinging turn in The Fall, and now cool swordwielding cred, it would be nice to see him in a cool movie franchise. Was thinking the Dark Tower just in terms of concept, but I've not read the thing yet and can't quite justify any role. Nothing else is coming to mind right now. Any thoughts? Ooooh, I'm terrible at thinking of roles that would be good for certain actors! Really, I think LP can play just about any role he sets his mind to since he always gives 110% of himself to every role and has already shown what a wide range he has. Hey, I've heard they're preparing to do a sequel to TRON: Legacy. Maybe he could be in that! He'd be great as both a "User" or a kick-butt "Program" and he'd look great in the form-fitting outfits!

Master grovelling, elf-handling, PD, plethora of links
[In reply to]
|
|

Thranduil is everything that the Master wishes he could be and pretends that he is, but if and when they meet face to face in BotFA, I imagine it being a rather pathetic display on the Master's part, full of lots of flattery, groveling, and general butt-kissing. Then, I picture Thranduil either totally ignoring him, or saying something fabulously snarky, and only interacting with Bard from that point on. Eruvandi I totally this scene you have pictured there. .
Love how in control Thranduil is, and the self-control of Elves re Tauriel's immediate pause mid-rush even though she seemed fully intent on giving orc-death. He doesn't even need to physically intervene. Imagine if he did need to! I am thinking two scenarios. (1) Tauriel swings her blade into action, but Thranduil is faster still and parries her, perhaps flinging her sword from her hand. (2) Physically restraining her. Probably a smooth minimalist martial arts-style move, one that wouldn’t physically hurt her but would perhaps place her arm behind her back. I wonder if he has ever had to manhandle – or make that elfhandle – his elves.
Sound strategy! Loved David Arquette in this too. His character and Ned had such common ground and yet are polar opposites with their circumstance/vocation. It was fun watching Ned delicately work his way around. Re PD, it took me a while to get into the swing of it. I watched most of (rented) season 1,thinking “yeah this is kinda quirky”, and basically just Ned-watching intensely. But it wasn’t until near the end, with the couple of episodes featuring Paul Reubens whom I’d forgotten how much I adore, that I started to really get sucked in, and love the other characters, and feel invested in the story, and love the existential banter between Ned and Chuck, and so on. Then I found season 2 in a 3nd-hand shop and, being fully aware that after this there is no more, I am feeding it to myself very slowly. Allocating an episode as a treat, or a zombie antidote. I am a ‘delayed gratification’ person, quite able to draw something out for a highly enjoyable prolonged period of anticipation, rather than splurge on it all at once, as much as part of me wants to. (this attitude is also assisting in my wait for the EE!)
(So I'm all caught up now, as far as I can tell, so this might be the last WW post from me for a long while) And your mission has been to be totally up to date on the latest tumblr offerings?? Wow, sterling work. You have given and given!! I am eternally grateful for all this LP goodness. But yes, I am still catching up on your previous donations. Take a rest from trawling the net.

At last, time. Looking through the fan art and tumblr links from previous page. So much eye candy. Nice Roman gifs. And I love the cartooning, such as the ‘what can never happen’ link! These HACF images are all I can get of the show – can’t even watch the trailers because of zoning. (Of course I could try to use that tool to get around it…. haven’t tackled that yet) I am kinda thrilled because- without looking at or copying any other images - I have done a tiny sketch of my own. Though it is not even remotely starting to get anywhere near the talent on deviant art – I might say that my minimalist lines could possibly be conceived to slightly resemble Thranduil. Maybe I’ll be brave enough to post it if I can get my scanning/nighttime photography issues sorted out. (Btw Lurker, I haven’t fully forgotten the Sil family tree *puts it in bag to take to work scanner* ) In the meantime, I want to post this John Howe concept image from the DoS Chronicles. I love the poise and pose of this random Woodland Elf, spying on the dwarves. (mods, hope this image not too large. Having photobucket link issues!)

Absolutely! And if the powers that be are peering in, I want to state categorically: I WILL willingly sit and watch each and every frame of every take with Thranduil in it.
Lol! I always love a good How to Train Your Dragon reference! Toothless. He's surely got cat in his bloodline somewhere, they all do! Such a cuddable size, though I think I'd end up in hospital with anaphylactic shock if my cats had his girth.

LOL, oh the images! Erm... is there a class for this? I wanna sign up! I can think that he might have had to do something like that, probably in situations like when he first got back from the LA. I imagine years away and leaving someone else to take care of the homefront might have bred some malcontent when he got home, especially since Oropher passed so much earlier. Then I found season 2 in a 3nd-hand shop and, being fully aware that after this there is no more, I am feeding it to myself very slowly. Allocating an episode as a treat, or a zombie antidote. *saves pic* Thanks, Kerewyn!
These HACF images are all I can get of the show – can’t even watch the trailers because of zoning. (Of course I could try to use that tool to get around it…. haven’t tackled that yet) I tried this web proxy for the free viewing of the first episode, and it worked quite well. Also, I recently realised the subsequent eppies seemed to be available on the AMC website post-broadcast too. I have not checked that out yet, prolly this weekend.
I am kinda thrilled because- without looking at or copying any other images - I have done a tiny sketch of my own. Though it is not even remotely starting to get anywhere near the talent on deviant art – I might say that my minimalist lines could possibly be conceived to slightly resemble Thranduil. Maybe I’ll be brave enough to post it if I can get my scanning/nighttime photography issues sorted out. Sounds exciting! Look forward to seeing it! (And I hope I will have something presentable to share too, sometime in August, after I complete that basic drawing course starting on 5 July)

Gosh, I'm always reading July as June for some reason! I just did it again while reading the article on the TORN home page about when the BOTFA trailer might be coming too. It said July 20th and I saw June 20th and thought "That's only four days away! Woohoo!...Wait a minute..." Either I need to read more slowly or stop being so distracted. Probably the second one. To answer the question, yes I think I can get CoH finished by July and be able to participate in the read-along. Yay!

...looks great. I will follow you, though I don't have a wordpress account. Does one need one to comment? I like the look of your pages too - very simple and concise. I've been thinking about wordpress myself as an umbrella for my creative stuff and travel journalling, and trying to flog a kids picture book I've self-published, but as yet I am still being a champion procrastinator. I like your piece about fan fiction writing (you've posted some of it here before, haven't you?) and your writing even just about writing seems excellent. Makes me realise I have barely dipped my toenail in the fanfic water. I've been trying to categorise my writing style and I think it's kinda YA. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Hmm.

That trailer is just tardy!
To answer the question, yes I think I can get CoH finished by July and be able to participate in the read-along. Yay! All right! Let's do this. So there's Kerewyn, you, me. Who else?

Does one need one to comment? Nope. But your email and name is needed though. I set to request that to minimise spam *fingers crossed*
I've been thinking about wordpress myself as an umbrella for my creative stuff and travel journalling, and trying to flog a kids picture book I've self-published Oooh, oooh! Hie thee upon wordpress, then. It is the best free option out there, imo. Though it might take a bit to get the hang of if you're new, but once you're familiar, it's pretty intuitive. Many nice features and even an app for Android phones (though I prefer being on the laptop when dealing with it). One great funcction I love is it keeps all your saved versions of a blog or a page. So you can go back and compare and even retrieve past versions of something you wrote, even if it's published. And there's a lot of widgets you can add and so on. The themes are easy to understand, navigate and customise (though extent is limited in free mode, but it's tolerable). I'm El Cheapo in this regard so I'm using a free theme, with free-of-chrage customisations, and free wordpress hosting Lemme know when you're set up! or if you need help or a personal review on the wonders of wordpress based on past experience.
I like your piece about fan fiction writing (you've posted some of it here before, haven't you?) and your writing even just about writing seems excellent. awwww... Thanks for the encouragement. And yes, I'm for recycling where I can. I'm using TH as my test read-write, and hope to get it fine-tuned to a happy spot when the Silm read-along arrives. Otherwise I may just continue to OCD over layouts, themes and such, and I want to avoid that and be able to concentrate on the book instead. I'm also trying to pace myself and not get blog burnout so I don't expect to post much, not everyday anyway. I'm just making it up as I go along, so I can enjoy the experience and do what I want, not what I think I should.
Makes me realise I have barely dipped my toenail in the fanfic water. I've been trying to categorise my writing style and I think it's kinda YA. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Hmm. None at all. YA has some of my fav books swimming in there. I envy you for having your style categorised. I'm still all over the place. Anyways! Hope to see your blog soon! Go, Kerewyn!

Re-posed the link over in the Reading Room

http://newboards.theonering.net/...orum_view_collapsed; I re-posted the link to the read-along over in the Reading Room while also shamelessly plugging the Thranduil Appreciation thread. Hopefully that will get us some more read-along participants! ETA: It just occurred to me...Am I going to need to join tumbler in order to participate in this read-along?

That was some quick thinking PROPS About the necessity of a tumblr account, I have no idea so I posted some Qs. Will update with the answers. Also, it seems the actual read-along will take place on a separate blog: http://tolkienreadalong.tumblr.com.

Ok, I’ve finally looked at all of the links, so here we go: http://ramida-r.tumblr.com/post/87598961554 Interesting Japanese version of Thranduil. It works well! I especially like the crown with the cherry blossoms on it since it goes with the concept that Thranduil is supposed to have a crown for every season and his crown for spring is supposed to have flowers. The glass of wine in his hand…I’ve noticed that a lot of artists depict Thranduil’s wine glasses that way: as little, round, almost bowl-like cups, but were they like that in the movie? I thought the wine glasses in the movie had stems on them like normal wine glasses. Well, now I have another excuse to watch DOS again! http://kazuki-mendou.deviantart.com/...-legolas-1-304831831 I really like pics of Oropher, Thranduil and Legolas all together! It strikes me as very sweet and I feel like they would have been a very loving and close-knit family had it not been for the tragedy of Oropher’s death in the LA. In my head-cannon I imagine that the pain of losing his father so abruptly and all of the responsibilities of being king being suddenly thrust upon him is one of the reasons Thranduil tends to be so cold and withdrawn during the time of TH. I was looking at some of the artists other Thranduil/Oropher works too and they’re great, but I have one complaint that’s really more of a minor (and rather knit-picky) technicality: In the other pics, they’ve got Thrandy and Orry (Oro?) with bows and quivers of arrows as if they’re going hunting or something, but then both of them are still dressed in their long, flowing robes. Who would go hunting in robes like that? They’d get all dirty and catch on branches and roots and get torn to bits! And what if they’re hunting something particularly dangerous, like orcs, and they have to run away (or run after them for that matter and their robes catch on something and they get caught? It’s not practical at all! (Ok, my knit-picking rant is done) http://choppel.deviantart.com/art/Thranduil-453197697 This drawing is so good I didn’t even know it was a drawing until I read the description! I thought the artist had just taken the original pic and turned it black and white! Wow! http://meanor.deviantart.com/...-of-Erebor-359159754 I really, really, really like this one! It’s not even Thranduil, it’s one of his scouts, but I love the colors and the feeling the pic conveys and it looks a lot like how I picture things in my head when I read TH! http://azumi1771.deviantart.com/...of-Destiny-452431621 This one isn’t the kind of thing I normally like, but I do like it for some reason. The whole moonlight/nighttime feeling captures Thranduil’s essence, IMO, and Elrond and Thranduil in armor sort of complement each other somehow. http://maya-notliketheother.deviantart.com/art/Legolas-425545951 I am now a happy Legolas Lass! Which reminds me…This pic was great, but I’ll admit, I kept getting distracted by this one too! Gosh, he's cute! http://hobbitjt.tumblr.com/post/87589171617 *fans self* Can’t…stop…smiling! http://lanka-ultra.deviantart.com/...-Thranduil-449738173 *thud* *fans self harder* Ok, fanning is not working!!! *grabs bucket of ice water and dumps over head* Aaaah. I’m better now!

And then this happens: http://grimapparitions.tumblr.com/post/88704958696 I'm dying. Now I have a burning need to own this game. (I think I saw him credited for voice work on a lego project. I hope it was this!) I must pause to shop online. ~~~ P.S.: After a couple of weeks dealing with cheap hotel internet service, I will never... Strike that. I will try never to complain about my crap home internet service ever again.

Wow! Just wow! Your dedication is exemplary. Small confession here: I started the mega Woodland Weekend threads with a comment on each link, but just couldn't keep up so the spammy lists
The glass of wine in his hand…I’ve noticed that a lot of artists depict Thranduil’s wine glasses that way: as little, round, almost bowl-like cups, but were they like that in the movie? I thought the wine glasses in the movie had stems on them like normal wine glasses.
My suspicion is those artists have been watching too much Australia MasterChef. Contestants on that show love using those glasses for fancy schmancy dishes. Coupled with Thranduil's fab cred, canon prolly got CGI'd over So props when I stumble on something like this
I really like pics of Oropher, Thranduil and Legolas all together! Me too! Love to see the magnificent Mirkwood three together. My gripe is Orry tends to be depicted as too much of a Thranddy clone. Leggy as the son isn't a replica, so why is the Thranddy dad a replica of him? (I know we discussed dimunitives and the hazards of dwarvenising Oropher with Orry before but I'll stick with Orry, because Oro is just too this ... even though this is a really cool char otherwise, I... can't... *collapse on floor laughing*)
I was looking at some of the artists other Thranduil/Oropher works too and they’re great, but I have one complaint that’s really more of a minor (and rather knit-picky ) technicality: In the other pics, they’ve got Thrandy and Orry (Oro?) with bows and quivers of arrows as if they’re going hunting or something, but then both of them are still dressed in their long, flowing robes. (Ok, my knit-picking rant is done) I hear ya! There's a fair bit of practical incongruity out there. I've seen Thranduil in a tree in his gold robe, and with that crown of his... unless he climbed unrobed and crownless, I can't see how he can remain immaculate though his adventure. But then doesn't he need attendants to help with the wardrobe?
This drawing is so good I didn’t even know it was a drawing until I read the description! I thought the artist had just taken the original pic and turned it black and white! Wow! This one's a keeper, isn't it? I hope i can get just 10% as good as this someday.
http://meanor.deviantart.com/...-of-Erebor-359159754 I really, really, really like this one! It’s not even Thranduil, it’s one of his scouts, but I love the colors and the feeling the pic conveys and it looks a lot like how I picture things in my head when I read TH! I hope we get something like this in BotFA, even if it's just a few frames!
This one isn’t the kind of thing I normally like, but I do like it for some reason. The whole moonlight/nighttime feeling captures Thranduil’s essence, IMO, and Elrond and Thranduil in armor sort of complement each other somehow. Kind of OT, but I imagine they have a friendship of sorts, just from the LA if not earlier, not BFF but as mutually respected peers. And by extension, I think that the twins would make trips into Mirkwood at need when they drop by Lothlorien with their mother or sister.
I am now a happy Legolas Lass! Which reminds me…This pic was great, but I’ll admit, I kept getting distracted by this one too! Gosh, he's cute! Glad you liked them. Regardless of the *ahem*mass exodus by his Lasses, Leggy needs some love too, and where better than in the nearest place to home tuft in lieu of an appreciation thread of his own
*fans self* Can’t…stop…smiling! LP would make one heck of a Numenorean too, wouldn't he?
*thud* *fans self harder* Ok, fanning is not working!!! *grabs bucket of ice water and dumps over head* Aaaah. I’m better now! LoL... now if only there was an easy way to find more of such tasteful EI-worthy renditions!
