Manu Bennett to do pickups in July Can't Post

Ringer Matt sent us this little snippet from a chat he had with Manu Bennett at the Sydney Supanova last weekend.

"I was able to have a quick chat with Manu Bennett (AKA Azog) whilst I was getting his signature. He said he had not completed filming for Azog yet on the final film and he was set to return to New Zealand next month to finish up."

Come and share your opinion about this on our Hobbit Movie Board over on our Message Boards.

Poor Manu [In reply to] Can't Post

This particular gig has been a lonely one for the Australian-New Zealand actor.

In his role as Azog the Defiler, Mr. Bennett has had to consistently show up to set in a mo-cap suit and frequently perform his part without anybody to play off of (despite a few extras), while surrounded by green screen.

Ian Mckellen and Manu were essentially in the same boat throughout this production.

Oh well, I'm sure that they were both paid handsomely.

If anything ... [In reply to] Can't Post

The pick-up scenes for Azog are probably alterations/edits to his already existing scenes. Just like how there were two versions of the Dwarves entering Lake-town and two versions of Azog/Bolg along the Forest River. I think it was a relatively late decision to switch Azog with Bolg in DOS, so they probably just want to fiddle with scenes to get them both to the BO5A, and for it to make sense (hopefully).

I have to admit, though, that all these Bolg-Azog-Yazneg problems would have been avoided if Azog had remained dead.

Yes. [In reply to] Can't Post

Pick-ups of scenes in LotR days have sometimes only meant an additional look, head shake, movement or something similar to this.

"I am afraid it is only too likely to be true what you say about the critics and the public. I am dreading the publication for it will be impossible not to mind what is said. I have exposed my heart to be shot at." J.R.R. Tolkien

We all have our hearts and minds one way or another invested in these books and movies. So we all mind and should show the necessary respect.

Hmmm [In reply to] Can't Post

I wouldn't say Ian McKellen was in the same situation as Manu. Other than his first couple of days of filming alone on the greenscreen Bag End set, i'm pretty sure Ian was always acting along with other people and on real sets/locations.

Although, one could say that they spared him. Tongue

Nevertheless, these guys are professionals. They are levelheaded adults who understand the inner workings of show business.

Having said that, I wouldn't be surprised if they broke down in their trailers or dressing rooms every now and then. Laugh

Acting can be tough.

I think he's probably loving it. Working in a beautiful country on one of the biggest film series in the world, along with one of the biggest directors of all time. Acting can be a lot of fun, especially playing an Orc! It's not like he's being put through hell.

"Acting can be tough" [In reply to] Can't Post

I've thought about that, with these Hobbit actors, time to time. Peter Hambleton said in a recent interview "it's a tough life".

I feel for Manu, who seems to be dedicated, handsome, and personable - he may have been only working for a few days at a time re Azog but seems to give it his all, and think in DOS especially that shows up. I've felt for him too at these "con" panels where so much attention is on the dwarves - but *shrug* far as I know, no-one HAS to do conventions.

Do actors and actresses ever go to their trailers etc. and break down? I think so, probably, like any job guess it can have real bad days, but to me the arts can hit real hard on a personal level. Casting agent Amy Hubbard has given some fascinating interviews, and one thing that struck me was her talking about the begging from actors/actresses they can get, "I just HAVE to play this part" and having to say basically "no". And how while EW's use of a cheap video filmed in a garden snared him the Frodo role, that's a very rare success and PJ has been flooded w. cheap videos of folks in capes.

A real irritation for me is all the work the dwarf cast did, how good these actors are - so I wonder if it bothers them that so much must be getting cut. RA kind of alluded to this re DOS, something that most of what he did was kept - but geez, that's some job, possibly working for days and having the work vanished, probably forever (of course if it came off bad you might be happy).

Anyway Manu impressed me with his efforts and attitude, and hope it leads to good things for him. Just read some article where it's generally viewed that a certain promising actress seems to have tanked her career by being a prima donna, in TV and films. So happy that Manu seems to handle all of this with good grace, at least in public, and he is very funny talking about the CGI suit.

It applies to many jobs, especially visual effects and prosthetics. All the work that never gets seen or most will not notice. That's just how things seems to be. You've just got to appreciate that the final product is great, and the things you put into it. Even the things that aren't seen can help you get to know your character or work on some designs.

hi avendel --

can you please name the "certain promising actress" who "seems to have tanked her career by being a prima donna, in tv and films"? it can't be shannon doherty, at this late date.

because you read this in an public article, there's no reason not to mention the name, and i am curious.

thanks and cheers -

.

aka. fili orc-enshield
+++++++++++++++++++
the scene, as i understand it, is exceptionally well-written. fili (in sort of a callback to the scene with the eagles), calls out "thorRIIIIIIN!!!" just as he sees the pale orc veer in for the kill. he picks up the severed arm of an orc which is lying on the ground, swings it up in desperation, effectively blocking the pale orc's blow. and thus, forever after, fili is known as "fili orc-enshield."

this earns him deep respect from his hard-to-please uncle. as well as a hug. kili wipes his boots on the pale orc's glory box. -- maciliel telpemairo

Good points [In reply to] Can't Post

Everything you listed would have made it worthwhile.

Just being in New Zealand would have been enough to suppress any prospective complaints and stave off despondency.

And as Avandel mentioned, Manu probably didn't have to devote too much time to his role.

However, I don't doubt that he felt, at times, unengaged and "isolated" during shoots.

Correct... [In reply to] Can't Post

...he was not in the book, and he was not needed in the films, except to pad them out. Everything Azog has done in the films could have been done by Bolg, and PJ wouldn't have had to alter timelines and events in the way that he has. Keeping Azog around sure hasn't simplified anything, that much is for sure.

Keeping Azog alive is, IMO, just about PJ's worst, most groan-inducing offense in all of his ME movies (tied with PJ's inventing a foolish and un-Tolkien Dwarf/Elf romance subplot).

Right! [In reply to] Can't Post

For me,personally,i could care less if he was or not in the book. All that matters to me and presumably to every casual movie goer who is not familiar or obsessed with the book and timelines of Tolkien,is that he is the most cool Orc chieftain with signs of personality from all Middle Earth films so far.I salute Peter Jackson for that laughable(sorry) offence and crime he commited, by keeping Azog alive and for offering us freely an Orc villain with a purpose.Along with Tauriel and Bard's character expansion,Azog is the most welcome and splendid addition to the film so far.To each his own mon ami.
