Choose one (I know it's hard, but do me the pleasure.) Smile

Can't choose. [In reply to] Can't Post

They all add to the whole, which is greater than the sum of its parts.

Great preference for The End of the Third Age [In reply to] Can't Post

That's where all the themes of LOTR coalesce and make the book the great thing that it is, really.

I adore "The Ring Goes South." The Fellowship is my favorite part of the entire story, and I always mourn when it breaks up.

So hard to say [In reply to] Can't Post

I love them all but i especially love the two books of the fellowship of the ring. For me they are perfect and contain some of my favourite chapters/passages of any books, Tolkien or otherwise.

Weird [In reply to] Can't Post

I would argue that Book 1 is almost nothing like The Hobbit, but that's a discussion for another time, I guess.

"Ring Goes South" [In reply to] Can't Post

Adventure-stories do not get better than this!

Though I love the sense of danger, the chase, in Book One... for example when the Hobbits look back to a hilltop and see a dark shadow against the sky... creepy stuff.

Btw... am I the only one who wished RotK was named "The War of the Ring"?

I kind of like TTT... but only when it is meant to be Barad-dûr and Isengard.

I think it makes way more sense. Even Tolkien thought the title would give to much away.

I agree [In reply to] Can't Post

The similarities that I see are the humor of ridiculous hobbits (especially Bilbo), the preoccupation with homely comforts, the perspective on Gandalf as a legendary master of fireworks and potential disturbance, and a general tone of innocence and wonder about the wide world.

After book 1, these themes start to fall off. Thankfully, Pippin keeps that perky hobbit humor alive Smile pretty much throughout. But there is a difference between having that as an aside, and having it as a consistent focus.

The Treason of Isengard [In reply to] Can't Post

Book three has always been my favorite. I think that the adventure really takes some interesting turns here. Book four is definitely up there for me as well. All in all, The Two Towers make up my favorite of the published trilogy.

That was a hard choice! [In reply to] Can't Post

While I love the story of the Fellowship all travelling together, Book I has me in the Shire and felt a part of the discovery and adventure the Hobbits shared as they prepared for their journey and began their journey.
