Simbelmynė [In reply to] Can't Post

From Tolkien Gateway: "Tolkien mentioned that Simbelmyne is an imagined variety of anemone. In appearance, Tolkien compares Simbelmynė to the European anemone, a small white flower growing among the grass or Anemona pulsatilla, the "pasque flower"[5]." Athelas [In reply to] Can't Post

A nice summary of its possible inspirations: http://middleearthnews.com/...-on-real-life-plant/. The most likely candidates appear to be wintergreen, greater plantain, mint, and basil.

As for athelas:

Another interesting association connected with the Tamarisk is, that it is the only tree now found growing amid the ruins of Babylon. Ker Porter thought that he discovered some traces of the celebrated hanging-gardens, and on an artificial mound there stood a tree
which the Arabs called Athela. It was hollow with age, and its branches bending downward gave to it the aspect of a weeping willow. The boughs were graceful and richly verdant, though its large trunk was old and rugged. Some travellers have described this lonely relic of the ancient grandeur this solitary tree as a Cedar, others as a willow; but Aucher, in 1835, gathered some specimens which he preserved, and which were considered by botanists to be the Tamarix pycnocarpus. The Arabs regard this tree as sacred, because, after the battle of Hillah, the Calif Ali reposed under its shade. It is thought to be as old as the time of Herodotus, B.C. 440.

-The Flowering Plants, Grasses, Sedges, and Ferns of Great Britain, and Their Allies The Club Mosses, Pepperworts, and Horsetails, Volume II, by Anne Pratt, 1855-1866.

Of course as per 1 Samuel 22:6, Saul is sitting under a tamarisk tree when he hears about David coming back. That is, the Return of the King.
