Unknown landforms around the Sea of Rhun? Can't Post

In many maps of Middle earth there are these two features that seem very mysterious to me. The first is the unamed forest on the eastern shores of the sea of Rhun. Is there a name for it anywhere?
And those Mountains towards the south western shores of the sea. What are they? are they a part of mordor, though they are clearly far away. Could they house another house of Dwarves?

And also if you look carefully at the actual sea of Rhun there seems to be a strange dotted section in the middle of it, that doesnt go in consistency with the way the sea is made up of those lines. Is this maybe a marsh land of some sort in the center of the sea itself? has it got a name?

And also what are the southern mountains of mordor called? they dont seem to have a name either, unless they are part of the Ephel Duath....
Thoughts???

I believe that Azog and Bolg are possibly the only two orcs who may be an exception to the typical evil nature of an orc. Azog had brought up his son, well enough that he actually acknowledges him as his own son. That is a first for any orc. And Bolg sets out to march upon Erebor in vengeance of his fathers death. How many orcs will Try and avenge another dead orc? Most will just forget about the dead one. This gives me hope that Orcs, have some traits of good in them, even if it is small aspects.

The other mountain chain is Ered Lithui.... [In reply to] Can't Post

Or the Ashen mountains.

Also, the Ashen mountains are to the north of Mordor. Ephel Duath (Shadow Mountains) are to the south. The forest next to the sea of Rhun I believe in unnamed in Tolkien's text.

Middle-earth Geography Lesson [In reply to] Can't Post

The forest on the shore of the Sea of Rhun seems to be unnamed by Tolkien. The Dwarves of the Iron Hills might have a name for it; the folk of Dorwinion would surely know. The feature on the surface of the sea is unidentified, but perhaps it is only exposed at times of drought when the level of the Sea of Rhun drops by a certain amount.

Your guess about Mordor is correct. The southern range is a continuation of the Ephel Duath (the Mountains of Shadow).

They are not named by Tolkien [In reply to] Can't Post

they are not named but appear on the map, because Frodo saw that far east when he sat on the seat of Amon Hen. Faramir complains to Frodo that since Gondor doesn't venture east, they don't know much about anything after Ithillien- the Sea of Rhun itself is probably the only thing Gondor remembers and can place on a map, given its size and stationary location.

The Dwarf-house theory is plausible, but the Histories of Middle Earth and the Silmarillion put the Dwarven Fathers as awakening in increasingly further distances the more east we go- the Firebeards and Broadbeams in the blue, the Longbeards in the Misty Mountains, then twice as far away for the next Dwarf house and further for the last two (maybe in the Red Mountains near to where the Elves awoke). Dwarves live on mighty ranges though, that mountain spot looks like a pinprick by comparison.

The 'dotted section' is an island within the Sea.

The entire mountain range is called the Ephel Duath; the small break in the middle for Minas Morgul and Cirith Ungol are but little passes through the range, rather than a natural break.

The Mountains next to the Sea of Rhun [In reply to] Can't Post

The Rhun Sea Mountains (for lack of a better name) could have been home for a colony of Dwarves at some time. If so, I assume that it was probably abandoned or destroyed by Thorin's time since the Dwarf-lord never referenced it, much less called on the community for aid. It may be that its proximity to Mordor kept honest Dwarves away from it. Still, the mountains (or hills) couldn't have been too badly infested with Orcs, Spiders or Trolls since nearby Dorwinion prospered. I can easily imagine outlaws and bands of bandits sheltering in the hills.

Another question that suggests itself is whether the forest on the opposite shore of the Sea was inhabited by Silvan Elves. It almost certainly must have been at some point, but Easterlings might have driven them out long ago.

The island on the Sea of Rhun might have been a stronghold from which pirates could prey upon shoreline communities and water traffic coming from and going to the River Running.
