I read [In reply to] Can't Post

in an interview with PJ back when AUJ came out that the White Council would battle giant spiders and werewolves at the Battle of Dol Goldur.

I've wondered since then if that giant white warg that Azog rides could possibly be a werewolf.

Spiders breed and move about Mirkwood & check out Hobbit book maps too [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello Bombadil,

From Hobbit 1 and 2 movie dialogue by Radagast, Tauriel, Legolas and Thranduil, it seems spiders are breeding in great numbers and colonizing Mirkwood. They all discuss how spiders are moving about, seen in places they have never been seen before. Makes sense for spiders to move, test new areas, ease of catching prey, trees to nest in and take refuge in so no woodmen or elves discover them until colony is large and formidable. Also they formed an attack party to go after Radagast in his home, so they undertake missions--perhaps at Sauron's bidding.

Sauron might indeed have breeding pits in Dol Goldur, but he no doubt simply wants them to proliferate throughout the vast forest. Imagine dozens of colonies like the one Bilbo & the Dwarves stumbled into. If these were spread all over Mirkwood, they'd connect, communicate, try to ensare the great Greenwood in a huge cobweb empire. I have old hardcover Hobbit book, Tolkien's maps show there are spider colonies from the Forest River extending south past the Mts. of Mirkwood, the Old Forest Rd. and stopping near where the Woodmen have their villages. Dol Goldur well south of that, and the Lorien elves would be vigilant about keeping spiders out of their land. Perhaps Galadriel had spider raiders in here warrior regiments. Granted the maps of Mirkwood spider realms is a book conception, not fully explained in film. I am sure we have not seen the last of them.

The 13th Warrior

ps the Hobbit movie spiders seem much smaller than Shelob in LOTR though she was supposed to be the largest and most evil one of her era. But there are lots of them and they move and attack solo and in groups.

I prefer them in Dol Guldur. [In reply to] Can't Post

It is such a creepy and terrifying place of Middle Earth that would make more sense to me to have their presence there. The first two movies have also established that they are wandering around Mirkwood and are spawning in the ruins of Dol Guldur. So,there is a large possibility to watch these creatures in action in the battle of DG.

At the end she packs up and leaves to go set up housekeeping in Mordor with the Necromancer. Crazy kids!

I've speculated about Tolkien's Werewolves many times. [In reply to] Can't Post

I don't remember any quotes from Jackson concerning them though. Still, Dol Guldur is as good a place as any to have one or more Werewolves show up.

Seems to be from a story... [In reply to] Can't Post

...by Meredith Woerner on 8/1/12:

http://io9.com/...hobbit----with-proof

Specifically:

In his statement on Facebook confirming the trilogy Jackson singles out The Battle of Dol Guldur as something he couldn't capture without breaking the book into three parts. This is the battle where Galadriel kicks a lot of ass. They fight orcs who ride werewolves and giant spiders, so yeah, awesome. But Galadriel just rips down the walls. It's impressive, and helps explain why everyone is so petrified of her awesome power in LOTR.

However, while indeed Jackson announces the two films becoming three on the previous day, his July 30, 2012 post has no mention of anything about werewolves or giant spiders.

So this seems merely a rumor brought on by over-excited reporting.

Sorry.

Werewolves [In reply to] Can't Post

Werewolves are a huge cliche in popular media today. If PJ was going to include them, they had better be incridibly scary, and probably somewhat unique. Anything less than that would be a disappointment.
