Cowboy Poetry: A sample (Yes, I know it's not Tolkien, hope you like it anyway) Can't Post

Meneldor asked if I would share some of my cowboy poetry since I mentioned in another post that I wrote and performed it. So here are two and if you all like, I will post an occasional one here.

The first one is short:

HISTORY

40, 50 miles out of town I guess you'd say
stand several beat up cow pens that saw action everyday
They saw cattle roped and cattle shipped and broncs bucked out each morn
they saw cowboys fight and cowboys laugh but now they stand forlorn.
They no longer cast their shadows on the cattle ranching ways
they no longer stand beside him as he bends his head to pray:
"Please Lord just be with me as I ride the range this time
protect my horse and keep us safe as we ride through brush and pine."
They saw the cows have all their calves and saw them all get brands
they saw the scrawny kids go in and come back out a man.
But no longer do they see these things, their cattle time is done
no longer do they ship the cows with the rising of the sun.

Then this next one is a little longer, but most of mine are at least 3 typed pages and this is only a half page! But I framed it and entered it in two different county fairs and it took first both places.

LEGACY

My father taught me all I know
on how to live your life
from riding horses, throwing ropes
to being a good wife.
He showed me how to hold the reins
and how to throw a rope
and when a loved one passed away,
he taught me how to cope.
He made me strong in many ways
but let my beauty shine
he never thought I was his son,
his daughter was just fine.
He taught me how to drive a truck
and farm the fertile land
he taught me quick and happy ways
but also slow and sad.
He taught me how to train a horse
and brand a calf's left side
he was present on the special day
that I became a bride.
Then I was at his bedside
as he took his final breath
and so I knelt beside him
and told him he should rest.
"Good-bye" he whispered softly
as he took my trembling hand
"Be strong my darling daughter
do not cry and be so sad."
"For I can see the wide flat prairie
where a dark horse stands alone
for he stands without a rider
and he's come to take me home."
"I shall ride into that sunset
to the Glory far beyond
where everything is perfect
and nothing there is wrong."
Then I gently kissed his forehead
whispered, "I will see you soon
when I too will ride a dark horse
to that place beyond the moon."

I hope you enjoy these and even though they are not Tolkien, they are the products of what Tolkien gave me: poetry and the ability to write it. Before reading LOTR, I had no talent for it at all and now I am a paid performer!
Thanks guys and enjoy!
