Emotions run high in this fandom, and TORn is not exempted from that. I've noticed a somewhat "angry" trend in the boards (and the front page) lately, and that has sadly made some areas of TORn a bit unpleasant. But we are not here to talk about any of that! (and sorry for mentioning it!) We are here to talk about what makes you HAPPY. To be more specific: Whether you love the books, the films, both, or Richard Armitage, you are obviously here for a reason, and I am curious as to what exactly that reason might be. A thought or two about what you love about being a part of this fandom would be great, too! The only rule: be positive!
"It is not our part to master all the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succour of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields that we know, so that those who live after may have clean earth to till. What weather they shall have is not ours to rule." Gandalf, "The Last Debate."

I took a long break from TORn and came back for two reasons

First is that I've come to enjoy and respect a number of the people here and I missed them. I chose to stay off the Hobbit board when I came back and stick to the parts of the board that are still enjoyable for me. Whether it's SCOD on the Movie - LOTR board or the weekly movie thread on Off Topic or the caption contests on Main, there's a lot here to talk about and, more importantly, people here I want to talk about those things with. And second is that whenever I hear LOTR music, I still get chills. When I catch a glimpse of the movies it on TV, I still stop in my tracks and turn to watch. When I hear someone in real life make a reference to LOTR or use a line from the books or movies, I still get that geeky glow of excitement. I read the books shortly before the movies came out, but PJ's movies are still my anchor to the world of Middle Earth.

and was thrilled with the movies and love watching them over and over. Discovering such great actors that I hadn't previously heard about was just an added bonus, and I've enjoyed looking up some of their other work and watching it. I didn't really discover TORN until last year, and being able to connect with other people who also love these books and movies has been very nice, simply because nobody else I know really cares enough about Tolkien to have discussions.
Hop to it, Radagast, we've got dark powers to sleigh.

I love Tolkien's books, PJ's Middle Earth films, and Richard Armitage. I've been a lifelong Tolkien fan since I was six, and I was blown away by the LotR films. But I was never an active online fan of Tolkien before I joined here - mostly because while I might have been interested in participating in a place like this when the LotR movies were being made, this type of acivity was not on my radar. I got pulled into Potter fandom a few years after, and when that started winding down, it occured to me that there must be a Tolkien fandom online, and as it was my first and greatest love, it seemed natural to seek it out. I am glad I did. What I have enjoyed most here are the people, the fun (fangirling, games, April 1, etc.) and speculative discussion of the upcoming films and what adaptation choices the filmmakers might make. I find that's an interesting way to engage my knowledge of the text, ideas about storytelling, and love of Jackson's films. The discussion about where DoS would end, for example was a lot of fun.

to stay out of The Hobbit boards as well....just seems to get a bit unruly in there...I do venture in as a lurker quite often, but rarely post in there...There are a few folks whose opinions I look for and if I don't see any of them, I bolt. I hang in here quite a bit...Main is fun also...pollantir can be fun...

As Gramma says, ME has been my alternate universe for a long time - over twenty years for me. The books simply captured my imagination like nothing else I had ever read. So as a book-firster and ahead of the films, just the site as a discussion site attracted me, way back in 1999-2000. I didn't even see FOTR until it was out for almost three months - I was afraid to. Then I found myself loving it, and have been enjoying the visual ME trip ever since. So I sometimes I feel like my love of the film version undermines my credibility as a textual fan in the eyes of others, because of the amount of negativity one hears on a regular basis (if you look for it.) So I choose not to look for it! Back in the FOTR days, I signed on as a highly enthusiastic film fan, fresh to the Board after FOTR had been out for a while and the die of Lovers and Haters seem to be rigidly cast. At times it was rough, especially in relation to Liv Tyler, and I ended up staying in Greenbooks instead of the film board. This time 'round I seem to be doing the same thing; as Magpie so eloquently wrote the other day about one's 'blanket' and the pleasure in enjoying something you truly love with like minds, it can be hard to have the joy rather fizzled on. Yes, yes, I know people have different opinions, and that's fine...its just not my nature to rain on anyone else's parade especially if the parade is deeply personal and one never knows how much that connection to something joyful means to another person. OffTopic, Main and the RR are where I spend my time nowadays...sadly I simply love TH too much to spend time there - one has to pick one's battles after all, and I have enough in recent RL to worry about them in cyberspace. The positive though is that for me the fandom to me is far beyond the films, since it started with the texts and has extended to include the many, many clever, warm and wonderful people I know here. So thanks to all for that.

I mostly visit Off Topic and Main these days, and the Reading Room and Pollantir sometimes. I've stayed away from the Hobbit board. I was very excited about LotR when it came out, but I kind of overdosed at the time, so now what I enjoy most here is the friends I've made. On the boards I frequent, people are pretty sweet.

Whether you love the books, the films, both, or Richard Armitage, you are obviously here for a reason I read the books a long time ago and they've always been there, at least in the back of my mind. When the LOTR movies came out, I was a big fan and did pop in here out of curiosity, but it didn't stick, I think because there were a lot of book readers that didn't like the changes for the movies. When the Hobbit was finally being made, and I saw the first teaser trailer, I really started looking forward to it. I got more and more interested in it in the year before it came out, what with the vlogs, becoming an RA fan, and seeing the live WW premiere in NZ. And after it came out, I started looking for more and more info online until it occurred to me to come back here for news. One of the front page posts that re-caps the forums caught my eye, and I started lurking here, mostly on the Hobbit board as I loved reading all the discussions on the movie. After the first month or two after AUJ came out, I started exploring the other boards, and really liked the friendly community. I still post to the Hobbit board, but Off Topic is probably my second favorite as I love talking about other movies and tv shows too, along with all the other random stuff that comes up. So for me, it was partly the opportunity to discuss the movies I love as much as I want (my friends and family can only take so much discussion ), and partly the opportunity to talk about other random stuff with a diverse group of people. This is the first and only forum I belong to as I feel I can pretty much find someone to discuss any topic. P.S. When I joined, I had no idea I would be discussing Thorin's hair so much. But I'm glad I'm not alone!

and I avoid the Hobbit board.... too much emotion... I immigrated to TORn from the Netscape boards a long time ago. The friends I made there and spent ten years deep in fanfic writing with (go visit burpingtroll.com there's some really good stories there) have moved away from the fandom. I found Tolkien way back in 1972 .... junior high... I've read the covers off three sets of LOTR.... though my Hobbit never got as much wear and tear. I've managed to get through the Silmarillion three times and have used pieces of it and Unfinished Tales and The Book of Lost Tales as well as Fonstad's Atlas as basis for adventures in Middle Earth. I nibble around the edges of TORn and probably will continue to do so... it's a pleasant forum...much nicer than many others I've visited in LOTR fandoms and others.... because I'd just heard that someone was making a live-action film of my favorite book, and I wanted news. What I found was a community of people who loved that book as much as I did - something I had no idea was out there! There has always been vehemence around the movies. We had some wild times those first years before we got admins. When we got the new boards, I pretty much decided to avoid "Movie" as it was then, just because it seemed to be where most of the fires started, and I've mostly kept to that. From the sounds of your post that was a wise move, because I've managed to keep the sense of belonging to a community of like-minded souls.
