Oaken-art
" 'Fair lady Goldberry!' said Frodo at last, feeling his heart move with a joy that he did not understand. He stood as he had at times stood enchanted by fair elven-voices; but the spell that was now laid upon him was different: less keen and lofty was the delight, but deeper and nearer to mortal heart; marvellous and yet not strange." Chapter VII: In the House of Tom Bombadil; FOTR's Faerie contains many things besides elves and fays and besides dwarfs, witches, trolls, giants or dragons; it holds the seas, the sun, the moon, the sky; and the earth, and all things that are one in it: tree and bird, water and stone, wine and bread, and ourselves, mortal men, when we are enchanted." — J.R.R. does not harbor much insect life. It is the partially rotten stuff or wood with loose bark that can be a critter haven. I use that directly and not have it sit around inside. In the event of a bug making an end run or an aerial attack, i have 3 line backer cats that could make the pro ranks . Scooter seems to be the one, that takes quite a liking to such 'delicacies'.

speaking of bugs... Minneapolis and St. Paul are pretty much taking down all the ash trees trying to control the Emerald Ash Borer. We lost a lot of elms to Dutch Elm Disease a few decades ago. Someone over the river in St. Paul said it looked like a tornado came through they lost so many trees. It's hard on citizens because they're taking down healthy trees as a kind of 'controlled burn' tactic. Back to the original topic, I love how creativity erupts in the most common places. It's like a plant sprouting through concrete. Life finds a way and so does creativity.

As for those fancy woodpiles, they look very nice, very artistic work there. My own woodpiles are far more utilitarian. I don't want to worry about destroying a work of art when I crave ribs over the fire.
They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters; These see the works of the Lord, and His wonders in the deep.

Reminds me of when my husband & I would take a camping vacation every year in October. We liked to drive around & look at the wood piles. You know about my frustrations with buying wood. I've always said there should be a store you could go in & pick out the size & type of firewood you need. The picture with the assorted wood reminded me of that. I bet they have those stores in cold countries like Sweden.

from December on and try to bring only the dry, bark free wood in because it's cleaner. I also don't keep it in the house or garage over the summer. Too many crickets round here.

I'd still worry about the termites. I'd think whatever wood was in contact with the ground would be an awful temptation to them.

We keep the wood in the living room almost all year, we´ve even made fire even in july. Though i don´t make anything like that, couldn´t have the heart to destroy it such fine art.

it would give you an avenue for fresh creative trends. Besides, that is what cameras are for. For dwelling on the glories past . We like a wood fire too, for cooking . Heck with that charcoal stuff.

No wood in the house during the summer. But if the bark is tight i think it ok to bring in during burn times. It would be like pulling teeth to get all the bark off:). I have found that chestnut oaks have really thick bark and that harbors critters. But that has a tendency to come loose fairly easily after a proper year or two or three in the woodpile. Oh boy, my cats would have a field day with crickets

to keep it off the ground. After i use up a section i clean the ground well and make new runners. Have not seen a termite in 30+years. A wood pile that is kept in the sun is preferable too. I really had fun with this link when i 1st saw it. What a gas!

But I would hate to dismantle something so beautiful just to burn it! And the time it would take ... just normal stacking takes a lot of time. Don't forget that bark produces more BTUs than bare wood -- I keep a separate stack of just bark to add, if it gets really cold. We occasionally have a dozy wasp wake up in the house after bringing in a fresh stack, but they're easy to get rid of. And there's one less to start a new colony in the spring.

Are you going to be a hilo man, moving freight around? I used to deliver to HD's all over north jersey with the union ltl freight companies before i retired. Yea, being cooped up with little to do is not good. Getting out and getting paid is a double good. What are your hours? It does look bleak with the landscape covered with dead trees. Auntie can tell us about that. But i do know that at least a couple log home building outfits specialize in using 'standing dead' timber. Yes, people do like that bit of coloration for different applications. Some guys like you mentioned love building special log furniture with that, along with cedar, pine, cypress and sassafras, that come to mind at the moment. I will check out that site. I do know, if it does come to pass, i will use local materials most likely there in NC. I do like white pine. We will see. Good luck with the new job Bomby. What yourself at all times. My father in law liked to give me those word of wisdom once in a while. And tell me please how it is going too. sil

My daughter did a college project on his work, and I visited his studio in Scotland (he wasn't there - shucks!) while on holiday. His secretary was, though, and kindly arranged for him to sign a 21st birthday card to my daughter (one of his own designs) in which he also doodled a little rock cairn for her. I have quite a lot of his 'coffee table' books, containing pictures of his works, some transient, like the icicle and leaf sculptures, some stone, some wood. Wonderful things. We were lucky enough to attend a talk he gave in Liverpool Museum; my daughter thanked him for the card, but this was some years later so he was polite but a little bemused, I think! His work really makes you appreciate the artistic possibilities in natural materials - and the perils and puzzles of working with them.
