Three questions on The Ruling Ring Can't Post

These 3 questions may seem academic to the average Tolkien fan, but – Ware! Ware!
(Please – Use your hippocampus. No internet cheating: “Short cuts make long delays.” You will be put in the Lockholes for an undisclosed period of time! The first winner will receive one each “May the hair on your toes never fall out!” Those who miss a question will be notified with a “Where there's life there's hope.”

1. How many Ring Bearers were there, and who were they?

2. How many Ring Wearers were there, and who were they?

(This would include all those in Question #1, plus those that wore The Ring for say less than one hour.)

3. How many Ring Handlers were there, and who were they?
(This would include all those that held The Ring but never put it on.)

From World's End then he turned away,
and yearned again to find afar .
his home through shadows journeying,
and burning as an island star . . .

This is just evil :p [In reply to] Can't Post

I have to answer all three questions AND I can't cheat? No fair. Well, let me take a whack at it and see what I can come up with on memory alone. BTW since you didn't specify books or movies, I'm going with the movies because I haven't finished the books yet. So there.Tongue

Ring Bearers: 1 Sauron, 1 Isuldur, 1 Gollum, 1 Bilbo, 1 Frodo = 5. I think Sam technically became a Ring Bearer for a short period of time when he thought Frodo was dead, so if you want to include him then = 6

Ring Wearers: 1 Sauron, 1 Isuldur, 1 Gollum, 1 Bilbo, 1 Frodo = 5. (I don't think Sam actually put the Ring on in the movie did he? I don't know about in the books yet.)

Ring Handlers: 1 Sauron, 1 Isuldur, 1 Deagol, 1 Smeagol/Gollum, 1 Bilbo, 1 Gandalf (with tongs and the envelope), 1 Frodo, 1 Boromir (by the chain), 1 Sam = 9 (because I have finished FOTR, IIRC Tom Bombadil held it too so, for the sake of the book he'd count as 10)

So, how'd I do?

"So fare thee well, my own true love
I'll think of you night and day
A place in my mind, you will surely find
Although I am so far away
And when I'm alone, far away from home
I'll think of the good times once more
Until I can make it back someday here
To Paddy's green shamrock shore"

Hmmm... [In reply to] Can't Post

Ring Bearers: Sauron, Isildur, Gollum, Bilbo, Frodo, Sam (6).

Ring Wearers: Above, plus Bombadil (7).

Ring Handlers: Above plus Gandalf & (probably) Elrond caring for the ailing Frodo in Rivendell (8 or 9).

The Bearer of the Ring... the Wearer of the Ring.... [In reply to] Can't Post

Where there's a whip (CRACK!) there's a way....

1. Bearers. Sauron, then Isildur, then Smeagol/Gollum, then Bilbo, then Frodo, then Samwise. Total six.

2. Wearers. same as 1 plus Tom Bombadil. Total seven.

3. Handlers. Deagol, Gandalf (indirectly without touching it, does that count?) Total two (and in the movies only, also Boromir, total three)

1. Ring bearers-6. Sauron, Isildur, Sméagol/Gollum, Bilbo, Frodo, Sam
2. Ring wearers-7. Sauron, Isildur, Sméagol/Gollum, Bilbo, Frodo, Sam, Tom Bombadil
3. Ring handlers-? It's either 1 or 3. If by" held the ring" you mean physically touched it then 1. Deagol...Otherwise it's 3. Deagol, Gandalf, Boromir

Is it too late to amend my answer to fit your clarification? [In reply to] Can't Post

If not too late, then my amended answer to number 3 would be

= total two handlers, Deagol and Gandalf.

Like you said, where there's life there's hope, right?

No problem Rux.

But removing Boromir (who only held in the movie) still leaves you short. (no short puns please)

OK thanks

I'm close to giving up, but one last guess:

further amended answer to 3: total three handlers, Deagol, Gandalf, and Faramir

???

if it's not Faramir then i was never meant to get this.

Either way, thanks for the fun game Bracegirdle! Smile

Okay, let's give this a try... [In reply to] Can't Post

1. Sauron, Isildur, Smeagol/Gollum, Bilbo, Frodo, Sam

2. Sauron, Isildur, Smeagol/Gollum, Bilbo, Frodo, Sam plus Tom Bombadil

3. Sauron, Isildur, Smeagol/Gollum, Bilbo, Frodo, Sam and Tom Bombadil, plus Deagol, Gandalf, and whoever strung the Ring on its chain and put it around Frodo's neck in Rivendell. I don't think it says, but Elrond seems the most likely candidate.

And we have a winner(s) [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks to all for playing!
Apologies to all the movie buffs for not stating in the beginning – BOOKS ONLY. (For therein lie the true tales.)
Here’s the roundup with some explanatory notations.

1. Bearers – 6 – Sauron, Isildur, Gollum, Bilbo, Frodo, Samwise. (Yes Sam is mentioned in the Books as a Bearer of the Ring, and rightfully so.)

2. Wearers – 1 – Tom Bombadil

3. Handlers – 3 – Gandalf (He DID HOLD the Ring), Deagol, and ‘possibly’ Elrond, but certainly someone ‘in the know’ in Rivendell. “Frodo found that while he slept the Ring had been hung about his neck on a NEW chain,…” (My caps) -Many Meetings FotR

So, a Grand Tally: Handlers 10, Wearers 7, Bearers 6

And we have two winners (Hey! My call!)
ELIZABETH, who missed by one (as did most), and I know she knew Deagol all along and got it on her second try; and becomes the 1st to get them all. And 1st place because she’s the only one who got the Rivendell person up to that point. “May the hair on your toes never fall out!”
SILVERLODE, The first to get them all in a single try, although posted after Elizabeth. “May the hair on your toes never fall out!”

Runners Up:
Otaku, missed by one also, Rivendell person.
Ruxendil, missed by one, Rivendell person. Double-extra-secret credit for trying hard.
Longbottom Leaf, same same.

Honorable mention:
Eruvandi, for calling me on not mentioning ‘movies’ or ‘books’ (which led to some confusion)

Thanks for playing. I like all of you half as much as you deserve, and half of you more than I should, and half of you …. Oops, that’s three halves??

Elizabeth deserves the win. [In reply to] Can't Post

I should probably count as taking two tries even though I only posted once, since being late and seeing that others were needing multiple tries made me think extra hard about what obscure character might have gotten a touch in and I didn't post until I had it figured out. And Elizabeth got there first in any case.

Congrats Elizabeth! Cool

That’s very magnanimous of you Silverlode.
May the wind under your wings bear you where the moon walks and the sun sails, and your backpack be filled with mithril.

But what is written cannot be changed, although I will check with The Authorities as to the proper Rules in this unusual situation (this could take some time), and inform Elizabeth of your generous offer.

27 - Sauron, Isildur, Gil-galad, Elrond, Galadriel, Cirdan, Gandalf, 7 original Dwarves, Thráin, 9 Men/Kings, Gollum, Frodo, Bilbo

2. How many Ring Wearers were there, and who were they?
29 - All of the above plus Bombadil and Sam

3. How many Ring Handlers were there, and who were they?
29 + any baddies/dragons who wrenched the Rings from the Dwarves.

I'm sure I've over-thunk this thing, but it was a great cerebral exercise! GREAT QUESTIONS!
