Tolkien's LOTR Battles Inspired by WW1 Can't Post

Hi everyone, I've found a nice little article from the Birmingham Mail talking about Tolkien in World War 1 and how his experiences led him to create the battles we see in Lord of the Rings.

Article here: http://www.birminghammail.co.uk/news/midlands-news/tolkiens-lord-rings-battle-scenes-6734894

I'm glad the BBC and our media is talking about Tolkien as we approach the Centenary of World War 1.

I thought it'd be nice to share with you all

Thanks for this [In reply to] Can't Post

I do believe that much of LOTR is Tolkien trying to come to terms with his war experiences. That aspect alone makes it more "real" to me than many other fantasy stories.

"It is not our part to master all the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succour of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields that we know, so that those who live after may have clean earth to till. What weather they shall have is not ours to rule." Gandalf, "The Last Debate."

But I heard that Helm's Deep was based on Rorke's Drift and Théoden's last ride was based on that of Theodric I's similar demise.
