WORDS Tolkien OWNS? Can't Post

Sure he invented many words &
a Whole World, but in everyday language
Bomby can't help thinking of Tolkien when
everyday words are used.

Like "Precious" (He really owns That WORD)

Often the word "Shadow"
Tolkien springs to mind?

Always the word "Wizard"

Any other words
that do THAT
to you?

This might heave discussed before
but if you have a link
Bomby would love to read it.

Mushrooms [In reply to] Can't Post

Anytime I am in a supermarket and I espy these small edibles it always brings to mind the scene in The Fellowship of The Rings.

The four hobbits tumbling down a steep hillside and landing on a track not too far from....."mushrooms".

The word silver/y is another. Tolkien uses this word in his descriptive view of the heavenlies, night, elves, clothes, hair, environment. For some reason Thingol always come to mind.

Ah great post [In reply to] Can't Post

Ring! I can't not think of the One whenever some says "ring."

Servant! Of the secret fire...

Fly! I've made a habit of saying that when hurrying people.

He didn't the word. But Lotr is the only reasonably recent work that I know of which has the word. The Men of Gondor looked on in amaze!

Nine companions, so be it. [In reply to] Can't Post

While I was posting in the Palantir Thread, it dawned on me that the number "nine" is an every day occurrence and figures prominently in The Lord Of The Rings.

Nine ships there were: four for Elendil, and for Isildur three, and for Anarion two; and they fled before the black gale out of the twilight of doom into the darkness of the world. -Akallabeth

Doom and Bane [In reply to] Can't Post

There's a lot of doom and bane going around in LOTR. When I hear or read those words I immediately think Tolkien. Smile

PO-TAY-TOES! [In reply to] Can't Post

Anytime I here the word I fondly remember Sam talking to Gollum while he was preparing the rabbits for dinner.

*Po-tay-toes!* Boil 'em, mash 'em, stick 'em in a stew...Sly

I guess "Hobbit" doesn't count? [In reply to] Can't Post

As it's more a Name than a Word. For some reason I associate the phrase "cellar door" with Tolkien, maybe because I associate linguistic aesthetics with his whole career. But mostly, any name he created (or rescued from antiquity) I will always associate with him. (Carrock, Easterling, Ent...)

Lol. I was gonna say this. It's more due to the movies than Tolkien though I think.
