Since so many people wanted LOTR instead of the different books. My vote remains the Silmarillion though :)

The Sil followed by LOTR but I'm not allowed two options although for me the LOTR is the earthy representation of the Sil thus they are connected.

but tomorrow I might prefer Sil. Honestly, it's whichever one I'm reading at the moment.

You still need an "Other" category for Farmer Giles of Ham, Smith of Wooton Major, Roverandom, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and others not listed. My personal favorite is probable The Lord of the Rings, with The Hobbit a close second.

To me strikes a good balance between the high epic style of The Sil and the more earthy mundane style of TH.

When I first read LOTR I was really disappointed that Bilbo wasn't the lead character. Suffered even greater disappointment when the Sil first came out. *anguished scream*: "Where the heck are the hobbits?!?!?!"

particularly some of the short stories like 'Leaf by Niggle" and "Smith of Wooton Major" and "Farmer Giles of Ham". I really love the poems too, like "The Mewlips" and "Little Princess Mee".

For as much as I love all of Tolkien's works, and even being almost 67, I'm still a kid at heart! Twice affirmed ... The Hobbit!

I am only including Middle-Earth stuff. That's fine, but the title of your thread does not indicate any such thing.
