Simpsons jokes on the LOTR! January 27th

On the January 27th episode of the Simpsons, "That 90's Show", the Simpsons had a flashback to when Homer and Marge were dating after high school (alright, past episodes have established that they graduated in the 1980's and Bart was born in the 1980's, but the show has been on the air for nearly 20 years so they're apparently retconning it: in this episode Bart makes a point to say he isn't old enough to remember the 90's). Anyway, Marge gets accepted to Springfield University and Homer agrees to work extra jobs to pay for her to go. On her first day on campus, Marge is excited to see all of the famous "college" things like freshmen with beanie caps, autumn leaves, etc. and she is also excited to see the famous cliche of "professors holding class sitting down in a circle in the grass on the quad". ....the class is being taught by a young Comic Book Guy aka "Jeff Albertson" (Worst.Name. Ever)...who as we know from past episodes, is stated to "hold a Master's Degree in Folklore and Mythology" Anyway, as Marge is walking by during this college class *held in the mid-1990's*, she overhears Comic Book Guy tell his students: "...And that is why "The Lord of the Rings" is unfilmable!" You should put this on the front news page of TORN :)

The Gaffer and I laughed so hard that we missed the next 4-5 lines of dialog.
* * * * * * * Do we walk in legends or on the green earth in the daylight? A man may do both. For not we but those who come after will make the legends of our time. The green earth, say you? That is a mighty matter of legend, though you tread it under the light of day!"

I'll have to add that one to my collection. There are also brief references in other cartoon shows like "Family Guy" (The Eye of Sauron drops its contact lens and scans around for it, saying "OK, nobody move...") , "American Dad" (at a fantasy convention, someone costumed as a hobbit debates someone dressed as a "Star Wars" character about whether "The Force" is stronger than "The One Ring") and "Drawn Together" (episode title "A Very Special Drawn Together") not to mention the entire episode of "South Park" titled "The Return of the Lord of the Rings to The Two Towers." Seems I remember one other reference in "The Simpsons" in an earlier year, when the bully Nelson refers to Bart as a hobbit. I myself have violated two copyrights simultaneously (!) by drawing some of the LOTR characters as they would look "Simpsonized." (see link) -ML aka -Debbie/primmy
"I am in fact a hobbit in all but size." - J.R.R.Tolkien
