My (possibly a bit too hopeful) EE wishlist Can't Post

The more I watch DOS, the more I feel it is a perfect love/stfu-letter to the complaints everyone had about AUJ. It feels like the tip of the iceberg. For the EE, this is a list of all the changes and additions I hope and expect in chronological order :

- Wilderlands:
1. When it cuts to 12 months later, it will cut to Bilbo on the Carrock with the rest of the company climbing down. He will then talk to Gandalf about the Eagles (the whole taxi service business)

2. The bit where the whole company starts to run after Gandalf mentions a house, the editing is extremely jarring. They go from being in a pine-y, rocky area to being in a very isolated field, to being again in a pine-y forest-y rocky area to being outside Beorn's. I have a feeling more of this chase will be put in.

Beorn's House:

1. The whole 2x2 introduction sequence, with Beorn outside choppin' wood. More dialogue overall.
2. Possibly a flashback with Beorn at Dol Guldur being tortured by Bolg.
3. More of the Dwarves and BIlbo joking around, including having a go on the chess set.
Cool

Edge of Mirkwood:

1. Beorn fighting/scaring of Orcs far behind the company. Brief and slightly unrevealing shots of bear form in action, rather than an actual battle scene.
2. Better CGI on the establishing shots of the company riding towards Mirkwood.
3. More of a montage showing a sense of actual travel rather than "oh lets go Mirkwood, it's next door."

Mirkwood:

1. More of being lost.
2. Enchanted water/Bombur unconscious
3. Thorin with a bow
4. The company camping more
5. Slightly longer Bilbo climbing tree sequence

Woodland Realm:

1. More of a sense of passing time
2. The whole company meets Thranduil, with Thorin staying behind.
3. Bilbo exploring and enjoying that halls.
4. The party upstairs

Barrel sequence:
1. More of Bilbo being a barrel rider
2. More of the beautiful environment around them. In the art and design there are some lovely designs for this scene that look beautiful. More of that! The TE version was non stop action, without any breaks for appreciating the chaotic beauty of the forest river.

The High Fells:
1. More dialogue
2. More of the location

Laketown:
1. Some sort of interaction between The Master and the people
2. The party and ceremony marking the company's arrival
3. More moments that make us care about Bard and his family

The Desolation of Smaug:
1. When Thorin tells Bilbo they all need to move on, BIlbo to pop the ring off and sneak and explore ruined Dale. Thorin or Balin find him and they explore together. Balin maybe tells a more detailed story about Dale in it's glory days and the wrath of Smaug.

The Lonely Mountain:
1. MUUCH more of a trek up the mountain. The Dwarves complaining etc. Really make it look like they are desperate until Bilbo finds the statue.
2. Maybe a brief scene of the struggle it took the company to get up the statue.
3. The company not to leave immediately when daylight passes. Especially Thorin, maybe so desperation from him
4. More of the dwarves to be terrified for Bilbo about Smaug, mentioning it a lot.

Dol Guldur:
1. Gandalf finding Thrain, leading to flashbacks and whatever.
2. More exploration.

Inside Information:
1. More dialogue from Bilbo and Smaug. More proud riddling from Bilbo. This scene is like a culmination of Bilbo's experiencing and he is kind of expressing what he has become and done. More of that. This scene shows his courage. In the TE the Bilbo character arc section of this film is lacking a bit.
2. Less noticable and jarring inter cutting with Laketown scenes.

Laketown post dwarves leaving:
1. More of Laketown people reacting to Orcs.

Dwarves vs Smaug:
1. More of Smaug being a psychopathic dangerous predator.
2. More of Smaug boasting and showing off.
3. Some of the molten gold CGI to be smoothed over.

In General:
- More of the Dwarves character moments i.e Oin and his trumpet, Ori and his diary, Bombur and cooking/food.
- I want the barge ride with Bard to be the middle of the film, rather than On the Doorstep like it is in the TE.
- More Bilbo moments and a more distinct character arc.

Running time prediction: TE = 161. EE = 195

What are your hopes etc? Agree with mine? Any of it preposterous to ask for? ;)

Excellent list! [In reply to] Can't Post

I agree with most of that and I think quite a bit of it has a good chance of being in.

I especially agree with your points about the company's time at Beorn's house and the approach to Mirkwood (though I doubt we'll see Beorn scaring off orcs r any kind of action until TABA involving his bear form.) as well as the time spent in the forest.

And simply put - more dialogue scenes. I really felt the TE was missing that.

And of course Bilbo, Bilbo and more Bilbo please. Smile

Good list [In reply to] Can't Post

Unlike some here, I really disliked DOS and found it very far from the spirit of the book. My hope is that the EE will make me like it more, or at least make me able to tolerate the changes. It needed more of Beorn and Mirkwood, more dialogue/character interaction rather than non-stop action, etc. I would be in favor of some of the additions you describe. My fear however is that the EE will be more Jackson fan fiction. At least we know the Bombur/enchanted river scene was filmed. I hope there are other deleted scenes that capture more of the feel from the book.

Theatrical cuts vs. Extended cuts [In reply to] Can't Post

I really don't think we'll get much more "invented material" in the extended cut. If PJ has demonstrated one thing through all these Middle-earth films, it's that the theatrical cuts are more for the masses, whereas the extended cuts are more for us diehards. The EE of AUJ gave us pretty much nothing but character moments, and I can't see the EE of TDOS also not following suit. But you do realize by now, don't you, that PJ is fashioning what is really more of a LOTR Prequel Trilogy than a straight-up adaptation of The Hobbit? Evil

I agree! [In reply to] Can't Post

The films are more The Quest of Erebor than The Hobbit. No problems with that though. PJ really didn't have much of a choice but to flesh out links to the LOTR trilogy - it might've been different if he had filmed the Hobbit first.

Great list IMO [In reply to] Can't Post

And since RA himself has said so much was cut, yes, we want it ALL. No more of this 13 minutes additional footage (tho the Appendices ARE wonderful).

Why not? Excited fans purchasing EE versions are more profit for WB.

Two things that Better make it to the EE or else i will be angry [In reply to] Can't Post

Thrain and extended scenes in Mirkwood. I'm not sure about the introduction of Beorn because PJ altered the entire sequence of events for the three film split, originally yes, Gandalf was going to introduce the dwarves to Beorn but he changed it to how it is now.

I want more pony rides. [In reply to] Can't Post

Right in the beginning, they set out on Borne's ponies, and I was expecting a nice little adventure of it, but it was like a little canter, and boom, they're already at the woods. I can't help but feel there was more to that ride (and if you are a horse lover like I am, those looked like Gypsy Vanners) and I am hoping there are more scenes with them.

I also hope there are more Kili/Fili and Thorin interaction scenes, they are related after all.

And, I would love to see that party at LakeTown that got Bofur completely wasted (in ROTK EE, we got the drinking game)

And maybe some more scenes between the company and Bard's kids (the little girls were adorable, I'd like to see more "do they bring us good luck?".

Good list [In reply to] Can't Post

All of these things I also wish for in the EE. I truly hope there is a good 30 minutes of extra footage. There was only 13 extra minutes for AUJ EE and I have not brought myself to buy it yet.

To add to yours and others' comments, I also felt a bit short changed when the company leaves Beorn's house on their ponies and literally 5 seconds of movie time passes and we're at the edge of Mirkwood. Further dialogue and character development would have been great here.

Mirkwood was one of my favorite parts of the movie and I desperately desired more of it. I hope the EE scenes are able to capture even more of the true essence of Mirkwood. The feasts and Bombur falling into the water will greatly help with this. Perhaps a little more psychedelia would aid as well Smile

I recently bought the weta art and design book and there are some absolutely remarkable works of art in there that I wish had made it into the film, particularly the barrel scene as you said. When the dwarves and Bilbo escape in the barrels just outside of Thranduil's halls, they are still deep in the heart of Mirkwood which I thought would continue to feel dark, unwelcoming, and unsettling. Instead it felt like any other forest in the middle of the day with the sun brightly shining. I hope the EE adds a darkness to this part of the film. I loved what they did with the perspective of the camera when the fish were being dumped on the dwarves in the barrels. I hope for more of that perspective. It makes it feel more earthy, more real.

I was frustrated that the dwarves were so quick to leave the location of the hidden door just minutes after arriving, especially Thorin! This scene felt unnecessarily rushed and I wanted more interaction between all of the characters. This was the moment that meant it all to them. I would have loved to see a close up of each of the dawrves faces the moment they stepped up and saw the location of the hidden door. It would have illuminated so much of their individual characters which I still feel is lacking after seeing DOS. Hopefully all EE scenes develop the characters further and their interactions.

I am going this week to see it for the third time. I have a list of things I want to watch out for. I rated it a 7/10 after my first viewing and a 8/10 my second. DOS is definitely a movie that warrants multiple viewings to appreciate and understand. I can't wait for the EE!

Plus more Appendices as good as the ones for AUJ.

Yes, I third that. ALL of it, please.... [In reply to] Can't Post

30 minutes more, 40 minutes more - however long it takes is fine by me, so long as I get to see all the little details, the interactions between characters, the scenes they filmed but had to cut for the time.

Some galleries of artwork on the EE would be nice too. Not that I'm greedy or anything, I just get so much pleasure from it all.

I didn't like the human design of Beorn (not to mention I can't stand that actor) so the lack of him didn't bother me, but I wish we got more of a journey feeling like in AUJ. I wished we saw more of those beautiful horses. I googled them and turned out i was right about thinking they were gypsy vanners. There was even a blog about those exact horses too and the training they went through to be on the set.

Besides that I would love more Thorin, Fili and Kili as well as Thranduil. The Elvenking was just so interesting I couldnt take my eyes off him XD

The first shot of those horses in the meadow is one of my favorite scenes... [In reply to] Can't Post

I hope we get a lot more Thranduil in the EE, along with more Mirkwood in general like Bombur's magical sleep and the dwarves interrupting the elven feasts. I'd like more Beorn and I'd also love to see more of Bilbo wandering around Thranduil's halls (as I hope TABA includes his little chat with Thranduil after the Bo5A wherein he tells him he was there and gives him the necklace as payment).
